Estro. As a black roller skater, I appreciate this video. Your apology on this issue is sincere and heartfelt (keep reading). I appreciate the timeliness of video as well. Personally I feel the longer the silence, the guiltier a person is. At first glance honestly the first photo captioned, "should I get braids?" honestly did not offend me, as well as the photo with the blond afro. However, the third and last photo I was a bit concerned on and i could see where people would get offended by. I appreciate you coming forward, taking accountability, and addressing this because based on the videos and livestreams that you make on KZfaq, I know you are a good person with good intentions. You are a bright person so I wanted to stay open minded and give you a chance to explain yourself. And you did, photo college wise. On a second note, however, I feel like addressing the livestream with Lily is neccessary because you came off as almost arrogant and disdainful with it came to the skating history regarding the black community. So I stay open minded and I await your statement on this other issue. Overall, to all the people who may see this, I believe that Estro Jen is not an enemy, but an ally to the cause of anti-racism and BLM. She is human. She is taking accountability. She is learning. She is having a conversation. And I support✊🏾🖤.

Hey Jen! Thank you for responding so quickly. That speaks to your character. As a Black woman, I also am learning every day of the many intersectional perspectives that I have privilege over. The microaggressions that I am still uncovering in my past, present, moving forward for the future. Could you speak on that call out video's statement about the history of skating? I'm calling in here I think it's important people don't just focus on the photos, but the whitewashing of skate history. I am excited for you and the community because you have taken a stance of change. I hope that the skate community will continue to grow together, having willingness to hear other people's perspectives without getting defensive or throwing blame. Hair is a tricky topic in my perspective. The history behind black hair goes deep. There was a time when it was illegal for Black woman to show their natural hair. Then the systematic oppression diminishing Black women's self esteem of their hair. "You're hair is nappy" "straighten your hair and you'll get a job". It's different than cultural appropriation because a lot of oppressed people are told to ASSIMILATE to the norm. Look at Apartheid. Look at yourself, within your family history did you have to change your name or forget your language in order to assimilate in society? It's stuff like that. I'm going to share a few links below about hair and skate history if anyone is interested.

As a black person, I do notice when certain people treat textured hair with humor. It doesn’t always indicate malice or that someone has a strong bias against me but it does often signal to me that they may not be the most considerate of my feelings. The first picture is definitely a relatable bonding moment to me but Afro wigs have been used to mock us by others in the past so it means a lot to me that you addressed them and all of these photos. It makes me feel like I have a space to learn and grow where people will listen if I say I’m uncomfortable. You are making this space different and better for everyone. Thank you for sharing your feelings and being a wonderful example of change and compassion.

It's so funny that in Estro's channel you're all throwing flowers, but in Karen's (Karen the Karrot) channel, people were talking about Pigeon, Estro and of course, hunting Indy with pitchforks and torches... Get real people. I've always admired this 3 gals since I started getting into the roller skating community, doing my research before buying my first skates and this ladies inspired me. I’m totally confused as to why these pictures would offend anyone, I mean really what have we become!?

Love you Estrojen, you are the reason I started roller skating! Roller skates have given me a new meaning and joy to my life!! You have done so much for the roller skate community! I agree with you that we all need to unite together and love as one, this world does deserve and need it!!

As one of the people who've been speaking out, I want to say a few things: 1) Address Your History of Roller Skating Video, Lily's criticisms, and your dismissiveness towards them when called in: You've been in this business for years, personally profited off of Black skate moves, and have Black employees but did not mention the Black history and cultural influence on skating at all in your history of Roller Skating video. The excuse of information not being available in English is not acceptable when the majority of Black skaters calling you out and the majority of this information is in English. If you can learn our moves for profit, you can learn and respect the history/culture. 2) Address the colorism Moxi has engaged in: Black skaters and other BIPOC skaters have repeatedly called out how your brand has little to no representation of dark skin and brown skin Black and BIPOC skaters in social media. This is inherently colorist, made worse by the fact that your brand has and continues to contribute to a whitewashed narrative of skating. While I appreciate the skaters of color you have currently, light skin and white passing skaters cannot represent all of us nor our needs. 3) Stop reinforcing a whitewashed and segregated form of skate culture: Current critique goes beyond the low hanging fruit that are these images. You have deliberately participated in whitewashing skate culture, centering a white narrative in skate culture, and only allowing BIPOC on your team who agree with or align with that narrative and it is directly harmful to Black skaters. You did not revitalize skate culture, you stripped it of its Blackness during a time of extreme prejudice and sold it to white women and white non-men as a lifestyle, complete without Black people. You centered yourself and your perspective at every chance and, when there was a chance your brand could be threatened by your racist actions, you choose the lightest or near whitest BIPOC to act as your shields from accusations towards a concerning trend of harmful racist behavior. That is racist and you need to examine, apologize, and correct that behavior. 4) Engage with those who are criticizing Moxi honestly without trying to silence, discredit, or gaslight us: xoxoBanzai and other previous Moxi affiliates have spoken out about their experiences of bullying, abuse, racism, and exploitation they endured while working for you just to be harrassed, stalked, and discredited as recently as today on one of your employee's livestreams. I've seen entire Facebook groups deleted due to fears of potential legal action from your brand for discussing your pattern of racism. I've seen Facebook posts reported and gone for speaking about racism Moxi, and primarily you, have engaged in. Lilyskatesalot and Nena on Instagram were personally confronted by you in dismissive and frankly uncomfortable ways. I've even been personally gaslit by two of your affiliates in the past for speaking up about your racism and racism the Moxi brand has engaged in. Rather than give us an apology for what is truly low hanging fruit, apologize for the ways you have silenced us on multiple platforms. I'm practically a random newbie and have dealt with being silenced by your Employees, this is an issue far larger than some images from 5 years ago. Engage with that instead of hiding and minimizing that. 5) Stop deleting or hiding comments: we see this behavior and it is not how an ally behaves. Do better and prove to people that they are not wasting their time hoping for more.

Jen I have so much respect for you coming out and apologizing like this! Your apology seems so sweet and genuine! The first few pictures were cute and funny! And I do believe that you meant no real harm in wearing the Afro, I think it was a genuine mistake and wasn’t meant to make fun of anyone! I’m glad you finally spoke out on the topic of the racism and micro aggression going on and I believe with your influence you could be a lot of help in supporting the black community! It’s been pretty hard for me and every other black girl (or guy) the last couple of weeks. Pretty emotionally draining. But I’m glad to see that a large influencer in rollerskating (which I love) is taking accountability and acknowledging the black community and how actions you have taken could make us feel. The 56 people who disliked this video, why? How does that help anyone. I’m a woman of color and I really appreciate and have much love for what Jen has done. Taking accountability and starting conversations is where it begins, I personally wasn’t offended by the photos but I can see how some would be. As a white presenting person it’s not my place to accept the apologies. However, as an anthropologist (we study humans, culture, language and what not). We see and study cultures and societies really well, especially things like racial tensions. You’re doing what you need to do to make positive change. You’re one of the only people I’ve seen respond in such a way. It’s a nice change to see. You’re not perfect, but nobody is. I hope to continue to see you grow. I think a lovely touch would be to re word the web site and use your platform to show how black culture is a part roller skating culture and rolling skating wouldn’t be the same without black culture.

A lot of women of color are commenting that they weren’t offended by the pictures and she was just having fun in those pics and that she shouldn’t apologize etc. I understand your position. HOWEVER, you have to understand that our hair has been mocked for centuries....so much so that the very character that is known to be goofy, wacky, the butt of all jokes and to be laughed AT....the clown, wears a wig that represents the texture and style of our hair.....because apparently it’s “funny”. Our hair has been deemed unkept, ugly, aggressive, looks like sheep’s wool, not mainstream beautiful because it’s frizzy and big and not long, silky and smooth. It’s been demonized so bad that women of color perm and straighten their hair. Our race has been made a mockery of for so many years....So yes it can be seen as a problem when someone takes that mockery and takes a few “fun” pics of it. I absolutely do not believe Estrogen is racist AT ALL and I support Moxi skates 100%. But unfortunately, situations like this, though minor to some, can keep the harmful stereotypes and bias cycle moving forward. She definitely should of been called out and I applaud the individuals that did because if she’s not aware of her biases, she doesn’t have the opportunity and space to learn, grow and change. As a new skater, it's good to see that the leaders and influencers of the skating community are being held accountable for their actions. I've been in your position. I know how hard it is to confront your young and dumb actions and implicit biases. I imagine it's so much harder to navigate while being in the public eye. Though I don’t fully understand appropriation, I’m open to learning more about the topic and its hurtful implications. Black Lives Matter and the transformation expands beyond the police force and includes individuals who are not black and want to be part of the solution bc it’s right. This is a human issue and introspection is difficult but that is how we progress society. I will not contribute to oppression and that means looking within myself and checking for problematic biases that might surface as micro aggressions bc I’m uneducated. Non-influencers like myself have the advantage of private edification. I’m very proud of my most recent role model (Estro) to be so proactive about these issues. I look up to entrepreneurs especially female ones. I’m a beginner skater and am thankful your tutorials, they have brought me so much joy during this quarantine. Super unexpected video. Super unexpected and some, in my opinion, respectfully, unnecessary apologies. Each of those photos that you described, as individual photos /isolated events, seem totally appropriate and silly /fun with your friends. I don't doubt your heart nor do I think you participated in any of those shoots with the intention to offend or hurt others. You are lovely and a great role model for addressing each one and I thank you for doing so. However, respectfully, it seems that this was a photo collage to attack you. How is that helpful? I could be wrong....I have not seen the post with the collage.. I am grateful for the conversation, but ANY photo, ANY "isolated chunk" of a conversation, can be misconstrued into an offensive action. I do not see this as helpful either. I ,honestly, saw they pictures awhile ago (my version of an ethics check is scrolling through an Instagram profile) the only photo that caused me to pause an examine was the braids one because, as a black woman, I get a little bit on edge about historically black hairstyles and the cultural appropriation of it. I remember thinking, "well this is with her friend and ,hopefully, she was just joking." Did you use her skills and experience and not compensate her? you need to address this. As a WOC, I do appreciate you talking about this uncomfortable subject...Although I was not personally offended by those photos....I can't speak for those that are...We all are not who we were yesterday...and everyday we all change as people...for the better or for the worse. I can see that you are at least attempting to change for the better and self contempt about your past actions and thoughts to improve as a human....A true apology is more of an atonement for one's past actions. It includes action not just empty words like "I'm sorry."...It's seems you are on your on path of atonement...this is the first step!...I'm rooting for you! 😍💞💕❤

Jen! ILY, and I wanted to take a minute and write a message to you. I've just been lurking around the roller skate community, and had no idea all of this happened. I think its wonderful that you have taken a moment for open communication to address these things with sincerity and honesty. I have not roller skated since I was 8 or 9, but I remember the roller rinks and how much fun they were for me. This year, after seeing the Moxi girls. After seeing you and QGSS, and the sense of community created around just getting together and having fun and being body positive and supportive of one another and just being kids again. The moxi group captured that nostalgia in a way that resonated so deeply with me, and the result of that was me purchasing a pair of yellow moxi skates for my 30th birthday, and I cant tell you how excited I am to skate again, and how thankful I am that what you are doing has re-introduced me to this thing that I loved so much as a little girl. Going into my 30s its been the greatest gift of self love and self care that I could have ever given myself. As I'm getting ready to remember how to skate and share my journey of getting back on wheels, I'm feeling more welcomed by Moxie, QGSS, and Moonlight Rollers than I could have ever imagined. I loved your nickname, and it simmillarly inspired me to pick a name for myself. I decided to call myself "miss (moxie) daisy skates". And I'll tag you on my first video! But ILY Jen, and thank you for this video and for reminding me of one of my first loves. Later skater!

I hope that's appropriate -- I figure the more people who repost it the more work it is for them to censor? Begin Raven's comment: As one of the people who've been speaking out, I want to say a few things: 1) Address Your History of Roller Skating Video, Lily's criticisms, and your dismissiveness towards them when called in: You've been in this business for years, personally profited off of Black skate moves, and have Black employees but did not mention the Black history and cultural influence on skating at all in your history of Roller Skating video. The excuse of information not being available in English is not acceptable when the majority of Black skaters calling you out and the majority of this information is in English. If you can learn our moves for profit, you can learn and respect the history/culture. 2) Address the colorism Moxi has engaged in: Black skaters and other BIPOC skaters have repeatedly called out how your brand has little to no representation of dark skin and brown skin Black and BIPOC skaters in social media. This is inherently colorist, made worse by the fact that your brand has and continues to contribute to a whitewashed narrative of skating. While I appreciate the skaters of color you have currently, light skin and white passing skaters cannot represent all of us nor our needs. 3) Stop reinforcing a whitewashed and segregated form of skate culture: Current critique goes beyond the low hanging fruit that are these images. You have deliberately participated in whitewashing skate culture, centering a white narrative in skate culture, and only allowing BIPOC on your team who agree with or align with that narrative and it is directly harmful to Black skaters. You did not revitalize skate culture, you stripped it of its Blackness during a time of extreme prejudice and sold it to white women and white non-men as a lifestyle, complete without Black people. You centered yourself and your perspective at every chance and, when there was a chance your brand could be threatened by your racist actions, you choose the lightest or near whitest BIPOC to act as your shields from accusations towards a concerning trend of harmful racist behavior. That is racist and you need to examine, apologize, and correct that behavior. 4) Engage with those who are criticizing Moxi honestly without trying to silence, discredit, or gaslight us: xoxoBanzai and other previous Moxi affiliates have spoken out about their experiences of bullying, abuse, racism, and exploitation they endured while working for you just to be harrassed, stalked, and discredited as recently as today on one of your employee's livestreams. I've seen entire Facebook groups deleted due to fears of potential legal action from your brand for discussing your pattern of racism. I've seen Facebook posts reported and gone for speaking about racism Moxi, and primarily you, have engaged in. Lilyskatesalot and Nena on Instagram were personally confronted by you in dismissive and frankly uncomfortable ways. I've even been personally gaslit by two of your affiliates in the past for speaking up about your racism and racism the Moxi brand has engaged in. Rather than give us an apology for what is truly low hanging fruit, apologize for the ways you have silenced us on multiple platforms. I'm practically a random newbie and have dealt with being silenced by your Employees, this is an issue far larger than some images from 5 years ago. Engage with that instead of hiding and minimizing that. 5) Stop deleting or hiding comments: we see this behavior and it is not how an ally behaves. Do better and prove to people that they are not wasting their time hoping for more.

Im a black female, I saw the pictures and was very disappointed. BUT, I think your response showed a willingness to having/keeping(🤞🏾) hard conversations on the forefront. You keep on rolling. You have brought so many good people together to have fun. And yes we all make mistakes. Its all about the continuation to learn and deciding to make conscious choices. Some people will be unhappy when you do good things or bad things. Cant make everyone happy.

Love you Estrojen! I’m a black skater who is continuously inspired by your talent, joy and willingness to advocate for all people. Although, I personally do not find those posts offensive, I am so proud of you for addressing this issue and continuing to grow as a human. Even more than before, I will wear my Moxis with pride!

Howdy. My mother is a 74-year-old white female who wore a bee hive for years. It was a huge hair fashion for white women. In fact, she wore one on her wedding day in 1967. Please educate me on how the blond bee hive wig on your helmet was cultural appropriation. And before the hate starts flowing in on how I am not woke, I teach multicultural issues and have been active in LGBTQ+ and ethnic equal rights since before most of the readers here were born (I say ethnic because genetically, there is only one human race...homo sapiens. There used to be homo habilis, homo erectus, homo neanderthalensis [most of us carry 3% of these genes still], the Denisovians [some of us have these genes too], homo floesiensis, and homo naledi). I am also aware of how artists like Elvis got rich on cultural appropriation (Please watch Roller Dreams on Hulu regarding how Hollywood white washed roller skating). Love to all my fellow skaters including my BIPOC and Queer Skate Alliance family.

The fact that you came out with an apology shows how much you care. The reason why I have loved and supported Moxi skates is because of how you are constantly showing positivity and giving representation to minority group and etc. these photos have obviously been taken out of context because if they took 5 minutes to see who you were and who you represented they would understand that you are an amazing person. Thank you for taking the time to make a video and take responsibility for your actions and not just hiding away from the hate. One thing I always say is that if someone does something wrong you look at three things: 1 are they truly sorry for their actions and the harm they caused 2 are they taking responsibility and not blaming it on other people and things 3 are they taking the time to educate themselves on why their actions were wrong and showing improvement in their future actions. You check these all off, and you are only not only not racist you are anti racist. I also want to add that I am black and I didn’t see anything wrong with most of the photos, someone already commented this but the first photo with the braids is totally something I would’ve done with my white friends, but this also further shows how you are not trying to hurt anyone and you are sorry so again thank you.
