We're taking a look back at the life of music legend and King of Pop Michael Jackson, and we're taking you back to ET's very first interview with Michael.
It was February of 1983, and Michael's legendary album Thriller, had just gone platinum, and would later become the best-selling album of all time, and a 24-year-old Michael sat down with former ET correspondent Dixie Whatley.
When asked where his gift for music came from, he answered, "God," and when asked whether there was a formula for his success, he answered, "It's my heart, I put my heart in it."
After childhood of fame, Michael told ET, "I'm just beginning to enjoy friendship, which is new to me."
He also said that making music made him happy: "I love to create, when I'm not creating I'm not as happy."

He looks so gorgeous here. His shyness really shows. As always, he gives credit to God for his talent with absolute conviction. He stayed true to that conviction and his ideals all of his life. Beautiful man!

There are reasons for it though. The biggest one is he didn't want to look anything like his father or be anything like his father. He was physically and mentally abused by him. Told he was ugly and had a big nose growing up. He made fun of his acne.. A woman in am airport also made fun of his looks asking him "Ewww what happened to you?" He was beaten when he wouldn't do something right while practicing. His brothers would be physically abused also, but they admit Michael got the worst of it. He would actually throw him against the wall and his mother would yell "Joe stop you're going to kill him!" Because of her religion the man of the house rules and she should never go against what he says or does. So she sat and watched these things happen to all of them.

Very true but people need to remember that in life looks can fade, so as long as you have a loving and compassionate heart forever that's the most important thing that someone like Michael will/should mostly be remembered for, and it's a rare thing for a big time celebrity. 😇🙌🏽💖✨️👑🌍🙆🏽‍♂️🕊

A lot of people talk about how shy he is, but honestly his body language comes across as respectfully dominant. He is confidently reserved, as he is calm, collected, elegant, and in full control of his movements.

The work, the backbreaking work that went into thriller. The guy was falling asleep at the microphone. I still remember hearing that initially the album could not be released. It was in bad shape. They took a break and rebuilt the album. I still think the it was Motown 25 that was his moment. That was even a news story around the world that this shy child Star who grew into disco became a legend and stayed one until the day he died.

He had so little schooling and missed out on learning the social skills we all develop through normal childhoods. He was misunderstood so much, a man child who never grew up. Yet on stage he was all man.I was sooo looking forward to seeing him live in the UK this year and am heartbroken that I'll never be in the same room as him or breath the same air. RIP my King. ever since he was five years old he loved being the star and the center of attention. you can tell when she talks about his success and asks him why he thinks he's so good at what he does and all he do is just smile that beautiful, perfect smile and it bring total happiness to his soul. it's amazing to watch. we love him and we miss him and we cry over our loss but he live on forever in his music and our hearts. he will never be forgotten.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with how he spoke in this interview. I would say he was very well spoken. Also, he was not "infantile"in this interview. Just because he was soft spoken and uncomfortable does not mean he was infantile. There's a difference. I see nothing in this interview that indicates that he lacked intelligence. MJ's education should be the least of people's worries anyway. This guy had enormous talent and that's all that matters and he left us with his legacy.

The king right there. This man was sent by God. Think about it. His music brought us all together. He was the only one who could do that at the magnitude that he did. Best singer ever.
