Many times you can read that the ETA is the preferred movement. But it is really better? This topic I would like to discuss with you today... .

From what I've read, Sellita used to be a supplier of parts and movements for ETA and Swatch. If I remember correctly, toward the beginning of the 2000s ETA started trying to consolidate all parts manufacturing within their own house. Sellita essentially broke away to sell their movements with their own branding in 2003. I think ETA's rights to the design expired around the same time and Sellita was able to keep producing the 2824 with little more than a rebrand. Sellita has since (in 2008) made some changes to the design. The changed the tooth profiles of some of the gears to increase reliability. I'm sure that ETA has also made slight improvements since 2003 too so I don't think the 2824 and SW200 are identical anymore, but for all practical purposes there is not a difference between them as Mister B concluded in the video.

Sellita made movements for ETA since 1950. In 2003 ETA moved all manufacturering in house so Sellita went on their own. Sellita movements are preety much the same quality as ETA.

The most important factor for movements out of the box is the regulating by the brands. Poorly performing movements are often due to brands not doing anything to the movement and relying on the manufacturers QC. The movements are often +20-30 seconds out of the box without any regulating. Sellita is making great movements with their new 330 and 500 series. Good video. 👌

As an independent watch repairer, original Sellita spare parts are freely available. Not so with ETA. If you buy a micro brand watch, a Sellita is the better option as any skilled watch repairer can service it and repair it.

It really depends. My Atlantic Worldmaster ETA 2824-2 movement performs better than my Tudor 1926 with the same movement. I don't think you will find many differences between the Sellita and the ETA, really. I do tend to choose the ETA if available, but I have 3 watches with Sellita movement and had no problems with them. Just get any of these and you will be find. The 4 hours power reserve difference won't be noticed, nor the 1 extra jewel.

Some makers put in silicon hair springs, more decorations, reduce the beat rate to get a longer power reserve, all with them same movement, just different ways to modify it.

I was wondering the same thing. I have a Hamilton with an H-caliber movement (essentially a Powermatic 80, from what I've read) and there are mixed reports as to whether your local watch maker should be able to service it. My guess is they can be serviced but not regulated, which should not be a problem since they are generally well regulated in the factory already. Would love to hear an expert's opinion on this matter.
@milesa-c3865

As far as I was aware the powermatic 80 in my Certina ds action is factory calibrated with a laser. This is done as the movement has no regulation adjustment on it. The unit containing the relevant components is modular and designed to just be replaced as a whole, so I’ve read.

@mb-watches
@mb-watches Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience. It depends on the movements and brand as well. A regular SW has its tolerances and there are lots of experiences with the NH out there were they run far faster or slower. I did have couple watches with selita for example Tag Heuer Aquaracer which did run within +2 spd. According to my watchmaker it is also far harder to regulate an NH movement than a selita or eta.

I currently have watches with both the ETA 2824 and the Sellita SW300-1... They're definitely not the same or even similar with how they work. They both run different, switch the dates differently (Sellita grabs the date wheel at around 30 mins after 11PM, where my ETA only grabs it at 11:55PM) and they spin the second hand slightly differently. Also, the crown controls are totally different on my Sellita (you can even rotate the crown the opposite way in certain positions). Lastly, for time telling, my Sellita always falls 3-4 seconds ahead of cellphone time each day, whereas my ETA only gains around .1 seconds in time every day. Just for some more clarification on which years my movements are from, my ETA watch was made in 2016 and my Sellita watch was made just three months ago lol. So yeah, NEWER ETA movements are much better and more reliable than even the more expensive Sellita movement.

You too bro, that’s how it is right now but I consider smart watches as a chance. If you get used to wear something on your wrist it’s more possible that you, when you get older, are More open to mechanical pieces so let’s see how this is going to work out 😁👍🏻🙏🏻

ETA 2824 and the Sellita SW300-1 Can not be the same. Compare ETA 2824 to Sellita SW200-1 and ETA 2892(A2) to SW300-1

If you look at it along these lines? Why not go all the way and use Seagul? Seagul movements, if correctly regulated, will give you similar results. The fact is, ETA 2824 movement is "an original". There might be painters around, who can paint sunflowers in Van Gogh style, better than Van Gogh ever could. So what ? Not that I particularly like the ETA 2824, my preference is for ETA 2892 (and it's derivatives), but I rather have one decent watch with ETA movement, than 2 watches with Sellita inside. Why? Simple logic behind is ..... "no one copies Sellita movements" ! Even if the watch is made by the same brand and is similar looking (Breitling Navitimer 8 for example)? Even if no one else around me knows what's inside? But I would know.....and that bothers me.

I wouldn’t go and compare a seagull with a Sellita. They have produced for eta before and delivered parts. Oris are using them and in terms of regulation there is definitely no difference to an eta movement. it doesn’t bother me, but I do understand your argumentation and can understand your position too. Thanks for bringing up this point of view

So the differences are.. 1 - The 2824 has a longer reserve & 2 - The SW200 has an additional jewel

Eta all day long . Every selitta I have owned has had problems. From rough winding to bad pick up on screw down crown and very poor power reserves. Do not buy a watch with a Selitta movement.

I have exactly the same experience with Selita SW200-1 . Very poor power reserve like 16 hours after wearing all day for a week. Returned for another unit with same trouble. Other watches I have including budget seiko's perform better in this respect. ETA seems much better to me, and my eta 2892a2 is superb.

The problem with Sellita is that they have been SLOW to adopt new technology which many watch brands now demand. As of today, you CANNOT get the SW200 or SW300 with a Silicon balance spring, you cannot get them with a silicon escapement, you cannot get them with a forkless regulator (set at factory for chronometer performance) and you cannot get them with 60 or 80 hour expanded power reserve main springs (usually aided by reduced beat rates). A Premium/COSC Sellita gets you an anacrhon spring and Glycydur balance... that's the end of it. While that is very much OK by 1990 standards, it is 2nd rate today even compared to low end SWATCH brands like Tissot or mid-tow tier offerings like Longines. That is a tough place to be for brands trying to compete using Sellita movements. -- Quite honestly, their silly excuse that it is because they want their movements to be serviceable by watch smiths everywhere over the long haul is UTTER NONSENSE. Just make the SIlicon parts or complete regulator modules available as parts from Sellita and any watchsmith who knows how to turn a screwdriver can replace them the same way they could replace a conventional part.

The SELLITA is the GENERIC version aka (COPY) of the ETA. Swatch group is the real deal. 💯 I don't disrespect myself by buying copies of anything!!🤟🏽

You are away that Sellita did supply regularly parts and movements to ETA? Without sellita quite a lot of micro brand wouldn’t be able to deliver any watches as ETA is reducing supplies ...

Wondering who told you that. Oris and Tag are using Sellita movement in some of their models and they still managed to keep the "Swiss Made" label in hand, so how Sellita going to produce in China?

That is nonsense! Sellita is 100% a Swiss movement manufactured in Switzerland. They have been assembling movements for ETA since the 50s. Now they are developing their own movement using the basic ETA designs whose patents have expired. Both companies use components manufactured by specialist companies for Balance wheel, balance spring etc.
