I love Duane. He takes a problem and fixes it correctly with whatever means are best suited for the situation. Sometimes he uses the scanner and other times he uses much more conventional and common sense techniques. Love ETCG and ScannerDanner together, though. Can't wait for part 2.

Nice guys Paul is a diagnostician teaching professional technicians who want to be diagnosticians(using gas analyzer,DSO,scanner,test lights,wiring diag etc),Eric is a technician who wants to help general DIY guys(looking at plugs,switching wires etc). The look on Paul's face when Eric says lets look at a plugs is priceless.Paul talks about injectors current and voltage,Eric says lets check for vacuum leak.In short ,no scope=Eric ,Diagnose it as a pro=Paul I love Both

Awesome man, thanks for the comment. It is good to hear you are finding the book to be an asset. Thanks again for the comment on the variable with this test. I wasn't even thinking about injector shut-down. For the rest of you: You will never see a PCM shut off an injector to protect the cat. from a misfire without setting a code for the misfire first. Also on initial start-up the injector is ALWAYS turned back on for a few, even with a completely dead cylinder misfire.

Yeah when I was younger I used to hate the old air cooled dubs especially the beetle. I'm not the biggest fan of the old bug but they have an appeal. I would prefer a tidy camper van/bus. They are mega bucks now for one in good condition. Unfortunately in the UK here they salt the roads in winter so rust free ones are so hard to find!

you can use your low amp probe and scope the cranking amperage. this will give you a waveform that will show a non contributing cylinder. and if you see a non contributing cylinder there is no ignition part you can replace to fix it. fairly quick diag. misfires can take the most time to diagnose and gain the least amount of money for your time.
@zx8401ztv
@zx8401ztv 12 жыл бұрын
Excellent video eric :-) As you said it depends on what you have for diagnostic equipment, just a swap of injectors between 1 and 3 would be a non equipment way of testing, the obd data would show if it made any difference. That would be possible for the ordinary person, but the expert may be the only answer.

Had it happen to me once on an old GSX-R. Loose corroded terminal on a multi plug. It so happend to liven the whole ignition system. Whenever it was on the motorway with good airflow, fine. As soon as I stopped at a traffic light for more than a couple of minutes, the connection heated up just enough to kill the entire bike. Ran perfectly again when cold. Had to go back to basics and do the old 'wriggle test' to find that one lol

am I missing something here ? we are looking for the simplest initial test, out in the field ,so we hook up our OBD2 reader which we just happen to have in the glovebox lol? Why not just pull the HT lead remove the plug cap and check for a spark first on cyl 3 or is that too easy ... My first step with a engine that clearly wasn't running on all cylinders is to pull the HT lead caps off the distributor one by one with some electrical insulated pliers and see if I can isolate which cylinder isn't contributing .....

You can get a Wideband 02 sensor for fairly cheap. Could you use that to an accurate enough degree (instead of a really expensive machine as shown)? Really good insight into technical theory and ideas (classroom vs. "hands on") more so as both are equally valid but one not as practical as the other without the equipment. This diagnosis sure beats pulling everything out and swapping it all for other bits hoping to get rid of the misfire though!

Its all good, and there really is no wrong way to go about it. To each his own. I didn't mean to come off like a know it all. Sorry To me the gas analyzer was a super easy for step for this one and I have to be honest. I do not use it for most constant misfires, just wanted to show it can be a real good direction test.

Nice video Eric. Can't wait for Part 2. I have a 2000 BMW 528i that has a misfire or stall at cold idle. It only does it a couple of times when cold starting. The car seems to completely turn off for a split second, then it would rev back on. Can you explain the difference between misfire and a stall. I would buy the guy's book at $50 if I could buy a cheap scanner to go with the book.

A lot of newer vehicles will shut off the injector of a misfiring cylinder. So you may also have to factor that into your diag. Clearing the codes usually restores the injector function until the chide comes back

As soon as we had no codes, I said fuel system. Then when we got such low HC readings, I said stuck injector. I really liked the quick and dirty compression test. That plus a spark check would point me at fuel. Fuel pressure check would then point me at injectors. There are many ways to do one thing. Always.

Yeah...Eric's mindset on this is to go right to pulling plugs out of an engine which not knowing if the plugs will come out easy or not then possibly resulting in stripping the cylinder head and don't forget the time it takes to get to the plugs on some engines. Intakes, hoses, sensors etc. Have to come off at times. Not saying it isn't a way of finding the problem, but rather a last resort solution as it could take way longer to do.

This video is a really great learning tool for freshly introduced new techs, and a refresher course of sorts for experienced techs. But the area that is lacking, is knowledge for the at home shade tree mechanic... the at home, keeping his or her own family vehicles running, does not have all the diagnostic equipment us techs in the shops do. The at home guy would only have (or could easily buy for cheap) would be a test light, spark tester, and cheap multimeter. The second video you guys did together was much more along the lines of only having basic test equipment... more videos only using home gamer tools and equipment would absolutely EXPLODE the views on BOTH of your channels.

GMs of that era are really picky about Clear Flood Mode. They tend to know if the engine has been cranked already when the key is in the ignition, and behave differently as a result--Some won't re-crank until you pull the key out, or turn it to the rearward accessory position. Pull the key out of the ignition, let the car rest for a minute, then go through the Clear Flood procedure, and it -should- work. Just personal experience here, though. :-)

@prnd21zinman37
@prnd21zinman37 10 жыл бұрын
How did you get to that conclusion? I think Paul diag path was spot on and revealed that he gave away all his secrets. Pauls method= Dead miss starts with quickest possible way IN THE FIELD to do a relative compression which is the clear flood trick. Next best test if you heard the Paul say it Is he likes to smell the exhaust. Again an excellent test that's super fast and speed equals money. Next direction fuel problem. Amp probe is the best next most logical approach that offerrs the most amount of data in a single test and offers the extras of minimal labor, less tampering and a bonus of ign primary to boot. since watching Pauls videos for about the last two months I feel that he is actually extremely candid with his methods and in fact gives away so much excellent free information that I can only surmise that he truly wants to improve automotive repair and diagnostic methods for mechanics in general. I dont think he is being selfish at all. Sorry have to strongly disagree.

I see both giving away all their knowledge in this particular case: Eric trytin to approach as much as he can to a house-made diagnosis where u dont have any machinnery so everything is optical, sounds, multi-tester, etc... Paul gives the correct way of doing it in a shop with the required machinnery. Paul's method is way faster and more accurate, Eric's method is home friendly and old style mechannics. This is one of the videos I appreciate the most as I can see 2 totally different paradigms approaching the same problem

Kind of interesting how PennDOT safety inspection let the HC value slide from 100 to 120. In Sweden the vaules of the safety inspection are set like this. HC at (100) CO at (0,5) CO2 at (0,3) O2 sensor at (0,96-1,04) So that that particular vehicle would had clearly fail an exhaust test in Sweden!
