Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind turns 20 next month. This Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind video essay analyses and breaks down the things that make this movie so endearing and beloved, even after 20 years. It looks at Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clem (Kate Winslet), as well as the direction by Michel Gondry, the writing by Charlie Kaufman and Ellen Kuras’ cinematography. We even break down the idea of the ‘manic pixie dream girl’ as we try to understand Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and try to figure out what makes it so special.

Thanks for watching. The disclaimer at 13:33 says: Confession: While I was researching this video it was actually quite hard to find many recent examples of people actually doing this. In fact, it was much easier to find examples of people like Herman using Clem as a rebuttal to the trope rather than as an example of it. This means two things: 1) It's good that 'the discourse' has moved on since 2014; and 2) We're still going to talk about it.

I love the feeling of conflict at the end of the movie, you want them to be together again even though it's easy to see that it will again reach an unhealthy place.

I only noticed it when editing this video, but the final shot of them walking down the beach cuts and re-sets several times before fading to the credits. To me, it implies that they went down the same path many times, ending the same way with them erasing their memories of each other then finding a way to start again....again and again.

@@PentexProductions I'm optimistic. The idea of making the same mistake twice is fundamentally repellant to me and it doesn't even matter what we're talking about. At the end though, Clem recognizes that pathetic, wimpy, apologetic smile, the wounded puppy-shit that Joel does, in the hallway. She recognizes it and then considers it. You can see in her face that she concludes that it's not that bad. She okays it. But more than that though, it's just not reasonable to expect the same outcome when monumentally new information has been introduced into the equation. They are both armed with the tapes and the knowledge that they both erased the other person. You don't take extreme measures when you're 50/50 meh on something. Plus consider the reaction of Joel and Clem's friends when they both come around and retell the story of how they both accidentally met each other again, after the DND letters from Lacuna. Even if Joel or Clem could pretend to be blasé about the odds of meeting each other again, on a whim, in winter in Montauk, their friends reaction of complete stupefaction would have an impact. Sure, they might have to work a little harder on the second go, but they'd have "fate" constantly ringing in their ears. They'd have a good excuse for a little more effort. IMHO.

For everyone that has watched this video without seeing the movie, I was 17 just about to graduate high school when I went to see this movie when it released. This movie changed my life and I will still to this day 20 years later that this is my favorite movie of all time. Please do yourself a favor if you haven’t watched it, stop the video, watch the movie and come back. It’s affected me in early, middle, and late adulthood. A local theater played it a few years ago and I jumped at the opportunity again to see it again as I did at 17 years old. Fun fact, it was at the Alamo Drafthouses and the preshow was Michel Gondrys music videos mentioned in this video and then some. I still have the cd of the soundtrack I bought back in 2004. This movie is magic. Thank you for making people aware of this forgotten masterpiece.

When I first discovered Michel Gondry as music video and commercial director in the 90s, this movie was exactly the sort of result I could only dream of would be the result if he got to do cinema. It's his masterpiece, it's so disappointing that none of his other films come remotely close to this.

I think the lesson is "easy come, easy go." To have a girl come sit next to you on the bus and start talking to you is almost too good to be true in most cases.

Great breakdown, and good synopsis of the nuance of those tropes we see in cinema. First time I’ve heard that expressed in such a clear way! Kudos!

What's pretty awesome that the marketing was made for fans of Jim Carrey in expecting your typical Carrey comedic performance and yet the fabs weren't ready for an artistic dramatic Jim Carrey performance, it's just incredible

There are sources linked in the description of my videos that show the main places I did the research. Lots of special features are available on DVD and Blu-ray releases of movies too, which is where most of the behind the scenes footage comes from.

Fun Fact : Charlie Kaufman almost cancelled the project and left because his writing process came during the time when Christopher Nolan's Memento came out in 2000, which both movies shared a little bit of similarities about memory but producer Steve Golin persuade him to complete the script. The rest is history

Totally, you can see why he was nervous about Memento. The video has an interview with Kaufman where he talks about this. Glad they went ahead anyway!
