Am a huge fan of Ethan Hawke, I got hooked on him since watching 'Before Sunrise' and has since used the film in all my university English classes.

Ethan Hawke just gets better and better and after watching his TED Talk which I highly recommend, I just want to watch him. Generous, humble, creative, down to earth, very cool guy!

I've seen a number of Ethan's films, including the very beginning-Explorers and Dead Poets Society-and find that interview such as this are valuable because they give you a 'baseline' on the real personality behind the many faces/voices/characterizations you already know. I'm a fellow artist (a composer) but the nature of our work is very different unless a musician writes film music, but even there the composer's work is largely done in isolation even though their role is anything but isolated from the rest of the film's collaborators. The danger I find in being an artist is that of living too long or often within the world of one's art-a level of commitment that's often necessary-and losing too much perception of the reality of people and events around us; being an artist tends to make one insular with other artists and their outlooks. What often helps my own art the most, actually, is associating with non artists. Ethan still looks pretty much the same to me as he did when younger, except for the graying hair. He certainly sounds the same as before but where I see the greatest change is in the depth of his thought based on his professional and life experience. I like that he seems more willing than ever to be himself before the interview camera rather than 'acting some more' for the public during interviews as some actors seem to do. In that respect he seems to be much like his Dead Poets compatriot Robert Sean Leonard who, while always eager to entertain with his fine sense of ironic humor, still seems willing to be himself when he's not fulfilling a job commitment. Something I rarely hear actors discuss is the audience's perceptions of their characters, which I find a bit odd since who knows their characters better than they do themselves except perhaps for the screenplay/script writer and the director? Richard Carpenter astutely knew the nature of the impact his sister Karen's voice had on listeners, why it was so, and how to elicit and incorporate that ingredient in their recordings and I would be interested in hearing Ethan and other actors give their own perspective on specific characters they have played and how they react to the way the audience members (who tell them later) have perceived them. I don't mean this in the obvious, general sense-'Ah, Todd Anderson was the stuttering introvert who Keating brought out of his shell'-but in a more detailed and analytical sense. I'd also be interested in hearing how an actor's own conception of their character spawned by reading the script may have been modified as the result of interacting with the director and other cast members. I do think revealing so many 'nuts and bolts' WON'T harm the public's sense of suspension of their own disbelief by learning such details, and that it would heighten our appreciation of films we already know and love in which actors have participated. I'd also love to hear actors-discussing-as-audience-members reactions to their own films-at least in cases where they are happy with the film editors' work(!)-and despite their being so closely tied to the film as contributors to it. Of course, this would require them giving opinions in cases where they've actually WATCHED their own films in which they've acted-for various reasons some actors don't/won't watch, etc. Thanks for a fine interview with Ethan, Jenelle!

OH MY GOSH!, what Ethan said about how in reality our feelings get in the way...and how with acting feelings are useful! When he was giving examples I just was in awe because with my adult sons (I’m experiencing the Empty nest syndrome at times) I have all these emotions and yet stuff them inside around my sons and I want so much to be authentic but with them but don’t want to burden or pressure them with my emotions. It is so wonderful that Ethan has had outlets for expressing emotions! Movies and acting are really a gift to us humans in this way...whether we are the ones acting or the audience getting to have our feelings presented in ways we can then learn from and hopefully have more empathy for the emotions and experiences of others and ourselves . I REEEEEEAAAALY loved this interview!! Thank you Ethan and Jenelle!

One of the best actors in the world. I've only ever see 1 of his films that I didn't like Getaway. Dad was a great film I just wish Ethan's role was bigger.

to Ethan Hawke, I agree with everything you say about One Flew Over....but I also heard that the author, Ken Kesey (sp?) refused to see the film for some reason. Do you know why? Did he have a problem with the casting? Was he upset about something? All of us who loved the book also love the film, but why didn't he want to see it?
