Sweat Elite - Training Sessions

Күн бұрын

Today we are back at the iconic Legatafo Track in Addis Ababa for a 5x1500m Workout (4min recovery).
Gudaf Tsegay and Lemlem Hailu recently placed 1st in the 1500m and 3000m at the World Athletics Indoor Championships.
We are joined by Hanna Borenstein, a PhD researcher who has been studying female athletics in Ethiopia since 2013. Thank you Hannah for all the incredible insights.

Hanna briefly commented on the unique 'collective' exercises. Kenyans do much the same, btw. It's less about the aerobic or flexibility effect and more about the 'bonded psyche' of the group. This makes little sense to western athletic notions of 'do-it-myself,' in which the individual (and their perceived needs) predominates. I continue to find this fascinating.

Thanks a lot- beautiful documentary.. Ethiopians runners are wonderful to watch and have the best running form in my opinion.. what really impresses me is how easy they run at incredible fast paces.. it looks almost effortless, while for normal people it would be like sprinting at full speed .. amazing

I know everyone is commenting this but the group warming up in sync looks so amazing. It's almost the same as watching a small or big group dance in sync. Thanks Angus&co for yet another incredible episode from Ethiopia.

From a physiological point of view this is basically a VO2MAX-Session (~5x4min @ 3000m or 5.000m race pace, 4min rec.) which can often be seen in other sports such as cycling. Add a big group, some overtaking and an experienced pacemaker to ensure the correct intensity and you have created a blistering session. ;)

Crazy session with world-class athletes and without carbon shoes. Feels good to see that you can be at that level just using normal shoes.
@RunForPeace-hk1cu
@RunForPeace-hk1cu 2 жыл бұрын
It’s ain’t the shoes buddy! People have been running world breaking times way before VaporFly came along. More comfort != faster shoe. Carbon shoes is just a substitute for Having strong ankles. If you already have strong ankles, it doesnt really help you run faster

I think Hanna hopefully can comment on the deep rooted pride and resilience Ethiopians have especially since their great grandfather defeated the Italians who came to conquer them. Barefooted and without any training! Oh don't forget Abebe Bikila, Mirutd Yifter and Mamo Wolde before communism came to Ethiopia. This might be a better angle too take for your "PhD" thesis! I can also guarantee you they did not show you the real training!

It could be one of the places. This track is quite popular, but it's down in Addis City. Mo Farah usually lives up in Solulta (a 40min drive from Addis) there is a dirt track up there, whish is where I think you are thinking of 😄

Good to see Borenstein commenting on a subject she knows well. Her previous commentary on Ethiopian-Jewish immigration, following the well-worn anti -Zionist path trod by the likes of her editor, Peter Beinart and Judith Butler is tiring, displaying a lack of balance all too common in academia today.
