Hi everyone! In this video, I take an Ancestry DNA test to find out more about my ethnic roots. Growing up, my parents always told me that I was a mix of different cultures, but I was never sure how accurate their deductions would be. With this test, I was able to discover my true ancestry and find out if my parents were being truthful or if there was a family secret we didn't know about...! Join me on my journey as I explore my heritage and learn more about myself!
(To be completely honest, I filmed this video 3 years ago and forgot to post it LOL but since it's time to make a KZfaq comeback and this video was already edited, HERE IT IS for your viewing pleasure 😃)

I've done Ancestry, 23andME, and Myheritage. My biggest surprises were that I am English, Scottish, Irish and Cuban (I had no idea about these at all). I was also very happy to learn where my African was from which is mostly Nigerian. I have something from every continental region but the only region of the world where I don’t have some ancestry from is the Australian Aboriginal region 🙂

She is a drop from the melting pot. I am 100% Filipino/Indonesian/Malaysian. I am waiting for further research how this big region is subdivided. The bottom line is we all came from a few families 50 to 60 thousand years ago. We differentiated according to nature and culture. And today, due to advancing civilization, there is an expanding mumbers of melting pot population.

Thanks, Amelia. I've done family history for over 50 years, and then took the Ancestry DNA test, which confirmed most of my research data, but, like, you, updates came and I found out that I had Welsh (Wales) ancestry. That surprised me, but since then, I have found many Welsh ancestors in my continuing research. In some of my ancestral lines, I have gone as far back as King Alfred the Great, Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, and many other historical people (of which I am a direct descendant). - Dr Dave Menke, Tucson, Arizona, USA.

I just with these Kits were a lil more affordable with the same (and in the future probably even better) work, because I feel like especially in the USA and Australia there are so many people, no matter which box/es, they currently tick who are so confused about their roots. I feel this a lil bit too, because one side of my familiy (allgedly, haven't done an ancestry thus far) goes back to 1400 in almost the same village area here in Germany while the other is a mystery after Wolrd War 2 and well you automatically spin a lot of stories (and not necessarily the romantic kind) in your mind...with the tad bits of information that were left verbally.

I was really surprised about the French ancestry and that I had that much Irish plus the small percent of Native American was a shock too. BTW, you can only estimate how many generations back an ancestry entered your family tree if that ancestry entered only once. If multiple separate branches of your family had the same ancestry, your percentage will be higher than expected. For an extreme example, I'm apparently 3% Neanderthal according to 23andme. Normally 3% of an ancestry would suggest a great-great-great grandparent of that ancestry, but obviously my Neanderthal ancestors were much further back than that (more like 1,000 generations, given how long ago they died out). However, since multiple different ancestors of mine decided to get it on with Neanderthals, I ended up with a higher percentage than I'd have gotten from any one of them.

According to AncestryDNA I'm of mostly African ethnicity and we add Norway, England, Sweden, Denmark, Wales and Native American into the mix. I guess one could me a mut?🤷🏼‍♂️ I also found out that I fathered a child in 1980 I did not know about. It's been 15 months since I found this out. The child has a few of my personality traits it didn't take me long to notice. I have memories of starting out using my left hand and my parents forcing me to use my right hand. Well, guess who's left handed?😂 I've asked my child questions and have gotten answers the same way I would have answered. Our writing styles are also similar.👀 I'm currently waiting on results from 23 and Me.

Inheritance of left handedness is not simple. It is not determined by a single gene but by up to 40 genes. It is also more common among males than females. Lower birth weight, being a twin or triplet , having a mother who is left handed, the month of the year in which the birth occurs and the mother’s smoking during pregnancy all increase your chances of being born lefthanded.

The North African reading is probably linked to the Spanish, and the Middle Eastern could be as well, from DNA mixed in with the local population from when the Moors ruled much of Spain. I also wouldn't pay that much attention to the 1% estimates as these can be misreads a lot of the time. You seem to have a very interesting mix though and I have heard that many Puerto Ricans have some African mixed in with their genes just because of the history of the island. I think the Communities mentioned, and I think that you see if you go into look at your matches, where it can tell you common surnames and places your ancestors in the past 200 years have been, or at least you have a similar DNA profile to, split by parent. If you have parents from fairly recognisable, different areas, say Spain for one and Italy for the other you can go into them and relabel them as paternal and maternal, and then view the communities each side links to, that would be really interesting to see, is you are looking for a follow up to this.

Oh, and I've done the AncestryDNA test, but being from the UK and having ancestors that I know are British or Irish I only have English, Scottish, Irish, and a little bit of Scandinavian, nothing as interesting as your Ethnicity Estimate. I've also done my grandpa, who is now 103, we got him a kit for his 100th birthday. We expected him to be mostly Irish with a little bit of Scottish, but it seems to think he has one parent for Irish, which was expected, but the other, his father, as being mostly Scottish. We've found many of his ancestors had brothers or sisters that went to Scotland, but no direct ancestors, and I think this can confuse the estimates if a lot of migration and population mixing happened in this way.

I even watched Mexicans, they all had sub Saharan African in them. So its not just because of the Islands history. Are you aware the Gods of this planet only created black Africans???? I think Ancestry has some slightly messed up reference populations. It is almost too much this and that. Also, when you went through your changing results I did wonder if you might not have a distant Sephardic Jewish ancestor in your mix too. (They often get North African, Greek, etc. in their mix of ethnicities.) Anyway, it's your matches who matter more than these changing estimates. I am a German (parents' home country), Scandinavian, Eastern European mix with a bit of distant Jewish ancestry (Sephardic and Ashkenazi) and maybe French. I have matches that reflect this. Also, I have colouring very similar to you.... dark brows, lashes, eyes and pale skin. I love the diversity that is being revealed and the overlapping/sharing of different groups. Thanks for sharing. Anyway you look at it, your ancestors sure did move around a lot, over the past few centuries... maybe sometimes against their wishes.

Indigenous Puerto Rican - Indigenous being the keyword - would have been included in the 12% Native American. Same with any of the Indigenous results from the American continents. The change really is that the data has become more specific. Greece and the Balkans probably fell under the percentage from the Caucasus. Again, just becoming more specific.

The Middle East and North African is likely also from your Iberian ancestors. The Moors controlled Spain for up to 700 years, longest in Andalusia (Al-Andalus). They were a people of Arab and Berber Ancestry. Genetically distinct from your Sub-Saharan African ancestry. The Moors were driven back to North Africa during the Reconquista but many mixed in and left their genetic footprint in Spain and Portugal.

Not always. "Moors" controlled Iberia (previously lots of other cultures invaded Iberia, as the Romans), but most part of people in Al-Andalus were iberian muslims. Some muslims were reconverted , but most part were expelled (Is not easy change your culture and religion). North African DNA in iberians could be older (Carthago), only Canarians have a significative berber DNA. I'm andalusian and when I did this test my ancestry was completely european, although It would be amazing have results with non european DNA. In fact most part of americans have mixed DNA (native american, european, african or asian), native europeans can have small proporcions (asian in north and east and african or middle eastern in south Europe). Best wishes!

While you get roughly 50% from each parent, this does not mean that you inherit 25% from each of your four grandparents. You receive 18.7% to 31.3% from a grandparent. When it comes to great grandparents, you receive not 1/8th from each. You inherit the most from your mother’s maternal grandparents, somewhat less from your mother’s paternal grandparents and father’s maternal grandparents, and the least from your father’s paternal grandparents.

It's just "Ba-leez" not "Ba-leez-ay".😊 DNA is all what is literally in your cells. Your cells can't look up where you were born. DNA goes back 1000-1500 years, which is why a lot of people are surprised by their results. DNA traces the migration pattern of your ancestors, so that community has much more to do with the DNA of your grandmother and not that you were born there. If you were born in the USA, it would have shown the same. You should upload your raw DNA to other companies and compare how they are different. I would also love to see you do a video breaking down your parental SideView now that's a feature.

I can't imagine how people ignore totally oral family histories and trust to companies who can't tell you anything about your ancestors, but only where in the world there are people with similar DNA.

Remember that only percentages for your parents are exact, all the rest ancestors are PROBABILITY, because you never know which part of their DNA your parents gave you. So from each your grandparent you have on average 25% of your DNA, but in theory it could be anything from 0 to 50%, for great grandparent on average 12,5%, but in theory anything from 0 to 25% and so on...

Children from same parents have not same.... so if the result not exact match what you was told is not same they have to had lied to you. It could be but also could be that you just did not inherent the part that you heard about but you inherited some other oarts. Like my daughter and me and my mother did test. My mother have things i dont have and my daughter dont have al i have. It doesent meant that I have relatuves my daughter dont have. Same al my mothers rekatives are mine. Who we are related to is not exact who we share dna with..... it is more complicated than that. Funny and interesting!

People can look white and have African ancestry. During the war Abolitionists published photos of white child slaves from New Orleans. (They did this to stir up feeling against slavery.) So if an African woman has a daughter from a white man and neither are emancipated, then if the daughter has a daughter with a white man, and this is repeated you will have white people with African mitochondria. This can happen as with as much as one fourth African ancestry. Fun fact Afrikaaners from South Africa average about 11% non-European DNA. This is because for the first 100 years hardly any Dutch women settled there. So the Dutch men had children with Koi-san, Indonesian, Chinese, Indian women, whoever was there. The whole time more Dutch men moved in. The Afrikaaners never had the one drop rule. Even during Apartheid a person with Coloured status could apply to become officially white. About 5,000 did so every year during Apartheid. Interesting world we live in.
