Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Excel RV Tankless, Ventless On-Demand Gas Water Heater, has a 38,000 Btu heating capacity. Now, this will let you never run out of hot water again using this tankless on-demand water heater. This tankless design provides endless hot water on-demand inside your RV. This will produce up to about 96 gallons of hot water flow per hour. It is perfect for RVs, boats, hunting cabins, and even in rural areas.
It is a very nice, compact design, it is vent free, so it requires no duct work, and has an electronic ignition that requires no standing pilot, which will save you up to about 25% in gas consumption. The efficient gas power keeps the hot water flowing when you're off the grid, and it'll only heat the water when you turn on the faucet or the shower. It does use a pure copper, oxygen-free heat exchange right here up the top. If I tilt that, you can see on the inside, there's your exchanger. This will conduct and transfer heat fast and efficiently.
The deflector up here you can see, it is a removable exhaust deflector louver, prevents any condensation on your walls from the exchanger. If you don't want it on there, you can just pop it right off just like that. If you wanna put it back on, it'll just snap right into place. Now, this is compact and lightweight unit, it's very easy to install, it only weighs about 11 pounds. It does use existing gas and plumbing lines, and I do wanna show you those connections.
If we zoom in, if you look at the bottom right here, you can see starting over here, it'll start with the 1/2 inch NPT cold inlet connection right here, right next to that will be the 1/2 inch NPT hot outlet, hot water outlet, and then over here is the gas inlet, it is also a 1/2 inch NPT, but if you noticed, it does come with the 3/8 inch female flare nut fitting on it. Now, the mounting hardware to install this is not included, you would have to supply that. If you noticed, comes with these two D-sized batteries, and what those are used for is they'll ignite the electronic spark module, and where they go is right over down here if you noticed. If you just turn this, flip this down, there's your two spots for the two D-sized batteries to slide up into. Once you slide them up, you just turn it to lock it into place.
This does use a low pressure startup technology, which allows the unit to deliver hot water no matter the water pressure. It is propane-fueled water heater, it'll start up with only two psi of pressure. The two knobs on the front here if you noticed, one over here and one over here, those one on the left right here, that is your gas flow, so as you turn this clockwise, it'll increase the gas flow. One here on the right, that is your water flow, if you turn this clockwise, it'll decrease the water flow, which will increase the water temperature. Now, they do use internal safety components to protect you, your family, and your RV. Uses ODS technology, which will not allow the unit to operate unless the living space is properly ventilated with the adequate oxygen levels. We're gonna zoom back out here. Give you a few specs on this, we're gonna measure, give you some overall dimensions. The width of it from one side to the other, we got our tape measure out, one side to the other is gonna be right at 11 1/4 inches wide, overall height of the body from the bottom to the very top here, gonna be right at 14 1/2 inches tall. Now, that louver will add some height on it, and it is at an angle, so it's gonna add you about 4 1/2 inches tall, it'll add to that. And the depth of it, and we're gonna measure from the very back to very front of the body, so that's gonna give you about 5 1/4 inches, and then the knobs do even stick out about 7/8 of an inch, so that'll add on about 7/8 more if you're gonna include the knob measurement. Now, the operating water flow on this is 1.6 gallons per minute of hot water per minute, so that's where you get your 96 gallons per hour, heating capacity again is 38,000 Btu, the heat source is LP gas, and we mentioned the weight, only 11 pounds. But that should do it for the review on Excel RV Tankless, Ventless On-Demand Gas Water Heater with the 38,000 Btu heating capacity..

Mine smells like it has a gas leak when in use but I do not have a leak. Why?

If you're smelling gas, there's a leak somewhere. Find a local Rv service center and have it checked out before using it again. www.etrailer.com/RV-Water-Heaters/Excel/EX93FR.html

What are the pro's & con's when comparing it to a traditional lp tanked unit? Sure its tankless, that saves space, but it just means you have to store the water (that would have been in the tank) somewhere else, or just have that much less water storage. And how long does it take to give you hot water? You never touched on that. Do you have to wait for the water to get hot and thus use (waste) more water? Please convince me.

There is no water to store in a tank just the water tubes, unless you are off grid but then you would have to store in your fresh water tank anyways. This acts like a radiator in your car, the copper tubes are heated from below from on demand propane and your water runs through the heat thus producing instant hot water. Though you will have to wait the same amount of time it originally took for the water to reach your faucet as you did before depending on where you install this . This will cut down on weight not having the extra 6-12 (water weighs approximately 8# per gallon) gallon water tank depending on how much this weighs. It’s not a direct replacement for the built in tank so it will probably have to be mounted in its place somehow covering the original space. And you will loose your electric heating element if you had a dual heating system. But heating a traditional propane tank means as the water cools your propane will turn on intermittently throughout the day to keep it ready for use. This system is at your beck and call and delivers hot water on demand and unlike a tank it will not run out of hot water until you shut off the faucet, run out of water or propane. Those last two things are under the operator’s control and not the tanks fault. I have a friend that uses one of these in a closed loop system for a portable hot tub in the mountains of Arizona at his office grid property and loves it.

The primary benefit is you won't be using propane to heat the water unless/until you actually need it, instead of the heater cycling on and off repeatedly to keep a tank full of water heated to the proper temperature.

The # EX93FR Excel RV Tankless Water Heater runs on propane gas only. The ignitor for the pilot light is DC powered by 2 'D'' cell batteries. The only gas/electric RV water heater we offer is a standard type from Dometic, which is part # DMC74FR. www.etrailer.com/RV-Water-Heaters/Dometic/DMC74FR.html

Instructions are not very good. You will need rubber washers on the intake and outflow connections it only came with one and doesn’t tell you where it goes. Could go on the propane inlet.

There are several issues that could prevent this particular water heater from igniting. The first might seem ridiculously obvious, but it still bears mentioning. You'll want to make sure that the 2 'D' cell batteries are installed correctly so the ignitor will fire. Make sure there's sufficient gas pressure reaching the tankless heater, and that the burners are clean and free of debris. Check those items and get back with us, please. In the meantime, we're reaching out to ExcelAmerica, the manufacturer to see what kind of advice they can offer.
