UPDATE: On the first shot of putting Teflon on the back of the unit, I do realize it’s on the wrong way (which is why I ended up doing a little segment on why it’s important to thread the right direction. This was fixed before installing). I’ve also had a few of you comment on the Teflon used for the gas fitting-I’ll admit when I’m wrong, so don’t use Teflon on the gas compression fitting! Also, install the fittings on the water OUTLET, not the water inlet like I did.

Great video on the installation. But you never put Teflon tape on flair fittings, it will eventually cause them to leak. The seal is the flair not the threads. You can look this up online for an explanation on why.

Call impression fittings don't requires pipe dope. Pipe dope can actually cause a leak on flare fittings. Please research how flare fittings work. The wrong advice can cause injury.

FYI. You did a great job on the video, but if you go back and watch it again, there were a few Teflon applications that were incorrect on the water fittings. Rule of thumb for me is clockwise applications in the direction of the threads in the tightening direction.

Flare is not compression, nor does it need tape or dope. It has a soft brass seat that is the sealing surface.

Its unbelievable how many people give advice on things yet know very little about what they are doing . That being said , good for you taking on this job yourself ! P.s. that flex hose should not be on a pex fitting , it will probably leak at some point . They do make pex-flex fittings .

Ha I’m used to it…part of the territory when it comes to the internet. Also im cringing at the flex hose on a PEX fitting…I have definitely learned since then 😂 It’s been almost a year since I made this, learned lots of new things. Thinking about getting a tankless for our camper but aftet watching your review , im not sure now . As for the flex line on the pex fitting . I guess it will be fine if its crimped correctly . They do make a flex-pex fitting though . Sucks the tankless decided to stop working correctly !

Great vid. Without a doubt the best I’ve seen on install on demand. I’ve been plumbing for 45 yrs. i cant tell you how many times I’ve used teflon tape and had leaks afterward. I finally started using both tape and pipe dope combined and have never had a leak. Also 5 wraps of tape werks best. Dont put more you can actually snap the fittings. thank you!!

There are always little things that can be done differently when pointed out and thank you for taking the pointers graciously and letting your community know there might be a way to do things with a better outcome. Great video. This is an easy mistake but you put the Teflon tape on backwards on the water inlet. Only reason I point it out is because you talk about making sure you do it right before and after the water inlet. Really a good job on it.

WOW...A+++ rating for someone that actually knows how to make an instructional video. I've watched hundreds of KZfaq videos on a variety of subject matter and they ALL have rated at a D to F. Thanks for the video. I note that some were mentioning the tape error. I will also add something that my father taught me on any tape usage with threads (water or gas). He said to always avoid the tape on the first and last thread groove. He was an engine and mechanic guy and said it can save a lot of potential trouble with the tape.

Great video! You are a great teacher. Just a reminder to all watching, a blue Pex pipe was installed to the discharge of the pressure relief valve. Pex does not discern which color goes to which temperature plumbing. Classically, it is used as blue for cold and red for hot. but that’s only for orientation with the plumbing. There is no difference in the composition of the plumbing. White pex is used for both. Yes, in residential, according to code, you would differentiate the color of Pex that is utilized for either hot or cold plumbing. However, as in plumbing and wiring, it’s a good idea to maintain the color coding so that anyone that is working on your RV or you’re home will understand what a wire or pipe can be carrying for safety sake. I would hate to be sprayed with hot water from a pipe that I just cut that was blue. Being nit-picky, calling this a”hot water heater” is redundant. It is a common error. It is a water heater.

One easy way to remember the tape direction is that if you’re looking directly at the end of the pipe to always wind tape clockwise or righty tighty. Also if you read on the front of each tape roll it will tell you the minimum number of wraps and if it can be used on water or gas. As far as gas flare fitting it’s best not using tape or dope, I use a dab of Nylog blue on my copper flares and nuts. As far as the t&p I would think you’d want your t&p valve on the outlet or hot side not cold. Otherwise this is a very helpful video. I’m installing one of these units now and can’t wait to have endless hot water.

great job we can't expect people to think of everything. The one thing I did different was to run out all of the hot water in my old tank, after turning off the power and gas to it, to avoid getting scalded when removing my my plug.

For a Simple reminder, For right-hand treads, Always when putting on the Teflon tape wrap it in a Clockwise direction, so that it is wrapping in the same direction as the Right Hand Threaded fitting is being turned and threaded on

Epic video, and not to criticize because that’s what most people are doing here, but the wiring portion does not have enough information and gets confusing quickly if you’re not an electrician. Not to mention not all trailers have the same color coding wires. Aside from the 110 wires that went to my relay I had four other wires that went into the water heater. You have to be very careful here because only one of those wires was a 12 V wire another would go back-and-forth to 110 to 12 depending if you are Boondocking or not and the other 2 were 110v, so if you accidentally install the wrong wire, you can fry your system pretty easily. I used a multimeter and tested each wire while also flipping the switch is inside, surprised to see them go back-and-forth of 110 to 12. Only one wire was stayed at 12. Great video. So to all those out there, don’t trust the same colors, get a multimeter and don’t fry your new heater.

Never heard of one of the 4 wires originally going to the water heater having 110. You should have 1 110 wire (with a black, white, and copper all together). The other 4 wires are most likely for the gas on and electric on switch inside the trailer. In the video, I explained that I used my meter to determine which one of the 4 original wires was 12v and which was ground. (Lots of good videos on youtube on how to test wires with a multimeter, didn’t think I needed to include that but will definitely take note for next time I talk about wiring!) But to update on wiring, when I used my unit the gauge of original wire was too small causing my power to surge every time it kicked on, so watch out for that. I currently have it hooked directly to my battery with an Inline fuse until I can get around to wiring it to my panel. Hope that helps!

Quick tip for butyl tape - if the backing is sticking too bad and you're having a bad time - put it in the freezer for 10 min. cold butyl tape is 100% easier to work with

I used to install metal roofs for a living and we kept all our tape in a cooler, because once that stuff gets hot, it becomes impossible to use without getting it everywhere. Keeping it cool is a very good tip.

The pressure relief valve ALWAYS goes on the output side of a water heater - that's where an over-pressure situation could conceivably occur, however rare that is w/ an on-demand water heater.

I would always turn water on and test entire installation BEFORE putting all outside screws in so if you have any problems you can pull it back out.

I bought wago, with the same thought that nuts are outdated and can be slower. After buying, I did more research and found I was wrong. Wago limits current flow much more than wire nuts, making the nuts superior. Be careful of when wago is used.

@@bobblack3870 From the manufacturers site: "WAGO installation connectors always come with the full current load capacity of the maximum connectable conductor size. They never become the current bottleneck in an electrical installation." My RV was also manufactured using Wago Nuts and I personally have them installed in my basement refinish with no issues. I even have high current draw space heaters plugged into the outlets. Where did you find your information?

@@panofish My info comes from electrician's forums. Most places in an RV may be fine. The professionals say they are good for solid, but not stranded because some strands may not get contact. They also dislike using them where there is more than 15A. Don't know why, but maybe it is related to possible generated heat due to a limited contact area, whereas wire nuts ensure a large contact area.

@@bobblack3870 Appreciate the kind feedback, but I guess we'll just have to disagree. I have a BSEE degree. Never seen signs of overheating with stranded in a wago. Perhaps with sloppy wiring? Who knows, but I trust the wagos. Personally, I've seen sloppy work with wire nuts also. For clean connections with stranded... I sometimes solder the ends.

@@bobblack3870 Ah, well the forums must be correct. 🙄 Wago connectors are used in almost every 16A 230V residential application in Germany, and possibly the rest of Europe. Wire nuts are expressly forbidden in Germany. Wago connectors can be used on solid or stranded conductors.

I’ve been using the Fogatti waterless tank for 2 years now. In my opinion this is the best upgrade possible on a RV. Nothing beats a 15 minute hot shower when your body is aching. No more 4 minute showers. Also, the propane lasts forever.

YES! We love it. We’ve had it for about 4 months now and it’s the best. Also people really over estimate how much propane this thing uses, I’m actually really impressed. If the apocalypse comes, I know I can get at least 2 months of hot showers with my current propane supply 🤣

Do they have propane / electric models? If they don't have electric doesn't use much propane? I just hate going to a campsite, paying for the slot and then still having to use my own propane. Just curious, I want to install one of these but I also want it to be efficient.

@@MrFordguy73 It is only propane. However, the propane lasts forever. I don't know why. A little propane tank will last easily 2 months for hot showers and the cooktop. Also, it only cost 25 bucks to refill it. It is not a cost factor at all. A 15 minute shower though is a game changer. You will not regret it.

@@fallenintocamping Give it about six months before it fails. Fogatti has the WORST customer service and a horrible track record for reliability. Mine acted up at six months and failed completely in 8. I gave up and installed a regular residential Tankless (Takagi 140H Indoor Condensing style) and it does all the things the Fogatti didn't...like work, maintain steady temperatures, and not error code every time it is used.

Great video. I believe you can use Teflon or Teflon pipe dope on compression fittings but not on flared fittings. And to end the confusion just apply your Teflon tape clockwise. Thanks

if a connection has its own way of sealing.....ex, flare, oring, compression, etc......dont use any teflon tape. yes it will be tight on the thread around the nut itself, but it may not be tight on the inner tube part and could allow it to leak. very good vid!!

Instead of deep throat clamps, you could use double sided tape. It will hold your wood and release pretty easily and not have the clamps in your way.Great vid

Good Morning and thank you so much for this video and I appreciated that you did this for the Fogatti unit from Rec Pro. I have spent a bit of time looking into this brand of "hot water heater" LOL just thought I would throw that in there due to comments regarding so many people saying it is not called a "hot water heater." I have been full timing for 25 years and I have always called mine a hot water heater. Important Tips: Fogatti comes standard with a 15 X 15" door. If Replacing Atwood 6 gallon opening requires 15 X 18" door. Option can be selected during Rec Pro Order and costs extra. Make sure to purchase the unit with the correct door size and you will not be in the same situation I am currently dealing with. Have you experienced any drop in hot water pressure inside your RV since installed? I have. Have descaled it and nothing seems to work to get water pressure back.

I believe the term is " water heater" You cannot heat hot water, also even after the tutorial on the direction of the tape, I believe you applied it in the opposite direction on some applications. Great video very educational, I wish my wife was as mechanically inclined as you are, happy camping.

I'm currently installing a Fogatti 8 Pro. Guess I need to make a video about this. That said and someone may have caught this already. The pressure relief valve is actually blocked by the gas line in this installation. And as stated by someone else but a VERY IMPORTANT PART. Don't use any type of thread sealant on a flare fitting. If it leaks you either have to replace the fitting or create a new flare on the pipe. That is the only SAFE way to do it.

I do tons of winter camping and this water heater specs say it won't turn on if the water is below 43 degrees. I use a heated water line but I'm sure there are plenty of times it is only 33 or 34 degrees coming in on those days the air is 15 or 20 below. So that is something to consider if you are a year round camper.

We just down sized on our 5th wheel and the new one has a 6 gallon hot water heater, and the previous one had a 10 gallon. I'm curious how much propane this uses, as we typically leave ours on electric.

Backflow preventer goes on the water inlet side. Also she mistakenly put the pressure relief valve on the inlet side but it goes on outlet side.

My first RV had a tankless water heater and I didn't like it. It didn't work well at all if the water pressure in the campground was low or running off the pump. I use a 1 micron water filter that also slows the water. Tankless heaters will reduce the heat if there is low flow. Maybe the newer ones work better.

Nice job, only problem is I still want dual heating so I’m not burning through propane so when one comes available that’s when I’ll be shopping. I can heat on and off for free with solar and batteries but it will drain quick if you are not careful 😂 But if you drop to a lower wattage you can keep on longer for keeping water warm then propane for shower. 👍🏼

i have that same heater when you drain it for the winter make shier it is empty blow compressed air though it are something mine froze and split the copper windings inside in two places from water freezing i may try to solder it to fix it but the copper pipe is vary thin . i have one of the cheap 150$ on demand things from Cina now I almost like it better as its cheap to replace

Please don't use wire nuts in vehicles. Over time they vibrate apart and then the connection starts arcing. It is very small at first but over time can cause a fire. Use the crimp style connectors, push connectors, or if you want to be the most correct, solder and shrink-wrap the connections. If you want to know if your panels are aluminium or steel use a magnet. Don't use your router in steel panels. Good video all the steps are easy to understand.

Rv manufacturers use wire nuts. Doesn’t mean it’s right, but it’s standard. Also, I’m using my router on aluminum, not steel. The only part of any RV framing that is made of steel is the trailer frame itself. Any framing will be aluminum or wood (or sometimes entirely made of foam).

If you have problems with the temp differances like most of these on demand rv heaters .if you get a 2.5 gal electric heater under one of your sinks that are close to water heater . As a buffer tank . There are piping diagrams on line to pipe in a buffer . Its cheaper than buying a Truma tankless . Truma tankless water heats you will have even heat at the foset.

I had a buddy who worked for NASA and told me you wrap pipe 3-5 turns to get no leaks….. he also suggested to use pipe dope with the tape

I'm having to replace my Class C my Attwood G6A-8E water heater and size is the concern. The outside frame is 14 1/4 " X 17 7/8" and the door is 18" W X 14 9/16" H. You water heater is similar to mine but I believe the size may be different in height. My question, will the Fogatti fit in to my opening without much modification and will the 18 X 18 Door be needed? I appreciate you video, would prefer learning from someone else's mistakes then my own. Oh and I do recommend using mechanic gloves when working in these tight area with sheetmetal that tends to be sharp. Thanks! Dan

As far as the fit goes, the unit says 12 1/2 for height but it was actually 12 5/8. My opening was only 12 1/2 so I had to make it bigger. Yours should fit fine…maybe some added support (cut 2x4s and screw into your frame) to bring your 14 1/4 down to 12 5/8, and your width to 12 1/2. The actual door is 15x18 3/4 so similar to what you have now.

While you're installing a new water heater, installing a water accumulator at the same time would be a good idea. An accumulator eventually saves battery usage and the pump doesn't have to run in order to get water pressure. Nice at night when everyone else is sleeping. Oh by the way, what you call an adjustable wrench at the beginning is actually called plumber's pliers. I would recommend using a good fitting wrench instead of adjustable.

Eh, I’d never use it. We don’t boondock enough to justify that. We use propane to heat our tank, and it’s surprisingly quiet. I don’t think it’s ever woken me up at night and it’s right below my head 😂

I have read all these commentrs and viewed your video which will be very helpful as i install our Fogatti tankless. however i Have two concerns where does the backflow valve go and how do you check the wiring to be sure you correctly wire it.

Hey! I didn’t install a backflow valve. Personal choice, but you can do your own research on it. I just didn’t think it was necessary. As far as the wiring goes, get your meter and check which of the wires coming from your original unit is 12 volts. You can do this a few way, but the way I did it was put my meter on a wire I guessed was 12v and one I guessed was ground and my meter read 12v. Another way is to check each wire individually for 12v and using the frame of your camper as a ground. Make sure your switch to electric and propane inside the camper is on-this will ensure power is going to those wires and you don’t mistake a non powered wire for a ground. Now I ran into a problem-when my unit would kick on, my power would surge. I think the gauge of wire coming from my camper wasn’t big enough, I actually hard wired it to my battery and put on a check fuse until I can wire it straight to my panel.

One more note-I kinked my propane line because it was WAY too long. I ended up shortening it and flaring it. If you don’t kink it, it’s fine that it’s too long, but I didn’t have a choice 😂

I do have the tankless water heater on my TH 5th wheel trailer. Is a great when you do have hook up in trailer park, but not so great for dry camping. Waste water more than water heater with tank.

Hi! I have a question. I bought this water heater to replace an old one that didn’t work. It was a pilot lit water heater only. So I have no electric wires running to the water heater. How do I run wires to new water heater? Do I run them from the breaker box somehow? Thank you for your videos. I enjoy them.

Hey! You should still have 12v wires coming to your original, so I’m really surprised you don’t. I actually ended up running wire directly from the unit it to my battery (long story…posting an update soon 😂). Use 10 stranded wire, and add an inline fuse just to be safe.
