I agree with you 100% - it's all logical and makes sense. I opened my shop this past September, and I'm doing it full-time now. My profit margin on everything (mugs, t-shirts and sweatshirts) is 70%. But my designs are different than anything else on Etsy, and it works for me. The design (text only) on my first mug had the competition of TWO! And they were the same item from the same seller - so it was actually ONE! And I made $800 in my first three days with that one mug! Am I just incredibly lucky? Uh, YEAH!

Which tools do you recommend for product research on Etsy?
@MileyonDisney

@@Om-gg5tk I use EverBee, Marmalead and Sale Samurai. Of the three, I think Sale Samurai has the most features. However, I believe they way over-exaggerate the search result numbers. I also hear good things about eRank, but I have not used it yet. Good luck.

How much do you charge for your mugs if your profit margin is 70%? What are on your mugs ? Could you possibly drop your website so I can take a look?

Thank you for your informative videos! I’m new to POD and I’m struggling to find the right listing price for my Canadian Etsy shop. I’m interested in selling products to both Canadian and American customers but as you probably know, there’s a big price difference on Printify between Canadian and American print shops plus shipping. Also I’m currently using CAD as the shop currency but find it difficult to price products to US customers. What would you advise me to do?

Don't forget the Shipping fee of 6.5% that Etsy charges on the total shipping cost. That's an extra $.50-$1 in fees. I have a 30-35% profit margin on my Printify listings, but usually get a realistic Profit after ALL Etsy fees of around 20%.

Thank you! This is soooo helpful! Question...should the cost of shipping be factored into the margin? So if I pay part of the shipping cost, should I be adding that in to calculate the profit?
@PODinsights
@PODinsights Жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, you should factor in the total cost that you will pay for fulfillment into your profit calculation. Even if the customer is going to cover 100% of the shipping cost, it's best to include the total price paid by the customer and your total cost so you can be sure the Etsy fees are correctly factored in and the proceeds are compared to your true cost.

Hi! You can use your location (or if you registered your business in a different city you can use that) even though your products will be shipping from other locations. In the last 2 years I've only had one customer message me and ask why their order came from a different location than the city in my shop profile, and I just explained that my business is based in the city in my profile but I focus on making the designs and have other local businesses who I partner with to make the products.

Great video! Do you suggest opening only a POD Apparel store in 2023 considering the extremely high competition in this space on Etsy? To give you an example, I am interested in opening a POD Apparel store in camping niche. I just typed “Camping t-shirt” on Etsy and it showed me 86,852 results. As a new seller just starting out, how can I make sure Etsy will show my designs in this sea of 86,852 designs considering very few customers go past Page-2 statistically on e-commerce websites for their purchases. I would appreciate your response on this topic,thanks.

Hi! Very fair question and there is a lot to consider here. First and foremost: any general search term in a "parent" niche is going to show thousands of search results. I would definitely count "camping t-shirt" as a parent niche, meaning it's not specific and I would not expect to be successful if I used that as my only keyword phrase for listings and tags. There are two ways to find better success: 1. Use other related keyword phrases that have lower competition to build sales, and this will start to help your search placement in the more general phrases like "camping shirt". So you still use the general phrase in your listings and tags, but you place more emphasis on finding more specific keyword phrases that have less competition. As your listings make sales, Etsy search will start to favor your listing in the broader, more general search phrases. 2. Find your sub-niches and focus on making designs for those. Start your research in the parent niche but then look for specific designs or design styles that have their own search phrases. Just one example - "glamping shirt" only returned 5,400 search results just now. I don't know if there is any demand for that type of design, but it's a camping-related niche that you have a much better chance of being found in vs. the parent "camping shirt" niche. It's also worth mentioning you also can take advantage of social media to build a following for your business and brand. If you drive some of your own traffic to your listings, you can generate additional sales that continue to help your search placement. Even if you are competing in a very dense niche, this can be effective if your designs are as good or better than most of the competition. I hope that helps!

Cool video. My Etsy client put a wrong adress and send me a message to change it. But the order is marked shipped on PRINTIFY. What Can i do ??
@PODinsights
@PODinsights Жыл бұрын
Hi! If the order has already shipping, there won't be anything that you can do unless the package is returned to sender by the carrier. If it's returned you can contact Printify support and ask them to reship the package to the correct address. If it's not returned, unfortunately the only option is to ask the customer if they'd like to place a new order to the correct address - you might consider offering them a discount if they are willing to do that. Return to sender service can take a while so you may want to let the customer know that in order to resend it you'll have to wait until it's returned and that can take several days. I hope that helps!

Great video as usual - thanks! The question arises about the cost of the printing itself, which you are talking about, but you do not name how much the printing costs, and these are also expenses. How much does it cost to print t-shirts and mugs?
@PODinsights
@PODinsights Жыл бұрын
Hi! With print on demand platforms like Printify, Printful, Gelato and Gooten, the product price they display includes standard printing. For t-shirts, "standard" printing just means one side of the shirt is printed. For example, the current cost of $9.00 for the Bella Canvas t-shirt from Monster Digital on Printify includes printing on one side of the shirt. If you choose to do printing on both the front and the back, that will increase the cost and the listing you create will show the actual cost - you can see it on the draft listing, you don't have to publish it. Other platforms have a similar process where the price will update if you add additional print areas.

What I don't like Is that Etsy charges fee on the item after tax applied..that can be a big difference depending on item total and into your profit..also if the person buys two items that two separate transaction fees

Really helpful breakdown of the pricing game - I am a new Etsy POD seller but I really don’t know how my products will ever compete without me pricing so low that I end up making a loss, as most competitor products are much cheaper (wall art & apparel items) - where are they sourcing this stuff so cheap?! 😏🤷‍♀️ I am thinking of shifting to trying digital products only because I can’t sell my POD items cheap enough😞
@nwinburn
@nwinburn Жыл бұрын
I haven't started selling yet as I am still in the research process; but, what I have found is that in t-shirts, for example, the price listed is, say $8.00, which makes it sound impossible to compete against. But when you actually want to add the product to your cart, you realize that the $8.00 is for the XXS size, and every size larger than that will be priced similarly to your products. It's kind of deceiving advertising, if you ask me.
@writerlass5924

@@nwinburn I just discovered this now too - especially for clothing! Also I think cheaper items are often dropshipped from China rather POD so that’s why they can sell so much cheaper🤷‍♀️🙄

You didnt mention VAT. I did all my pricing etc, pressed publish and then noticed the price on etsy was higher than my retail price, I calculated difference and it was about 20%. It had automatically added VAT. Im UK based but I assume its similar in other countries. So Im now priced too high but if I reduce my price Im eating into an already very slim profit margin, by the time Ive taken off all fees Im wondering if this is worth it
@PODinsights
@PODinsights 11 ай бұрын
Hi! Actually, what you are noticing for UK listings is not the way it works in many other countries. I did not mention this because I was not aware of it - I do offer some of my listings in the UK but the US is my main focus. Etsy does not add VAT to the display price in most other countries. I found a page where Etsy specifies what they do for countries where VAT applies and there is a specific section on the page for the UK: help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000337247-Custom-Fees-and-Physical-VAT-Collection-?segment=selling With regard to your pricing - you won't be able to control what Etsy does for the UK where they add VAT automatically to display prices, BUT you can control where your products are fulfilled. If your products are being shipped from within the UK, then your prices should not have VAT added. There are print providers located in the UK that you can use for several products (but not all), so I would try to use them for your core products if at all possible. Shipping times will be much better for UK customers as well if you use a UK print provider. As long as your shipping profile indicates that the UK is the country of origin, Etsy should not add VAT to the display price. For any products with a shipping profile that indicates a country of origin outside the UK, they will add the VAT to the price like it says in that article. With regard to impact on your profit, you should be able to register as a business to avoid being charged VAT on your order fulfillment transactions. This is the same in the US, it's just sales tax rather than VAT - if you file a sales tax exemption you are not charged sales tax by Printify. You should be able to do the same for VAT and avoid losing profit by "double-paying" the VAT.
