The main problem is that Kasper Hjulmand is mentally and tactically stuck in 2021. His squad selection is virtually identical to the 2021 squad no matter who’s in form and who’s not. And he plays with the same tactics, and he just can’t put it together. He found something that worked once and is too afraid to change, even though it doesn’t work anymore.

I think the big issue is that Denmark thrives as the underdog. But don't really know how to deal with being favourites. And 1992 was the total underdog story.

Hjulmand took the spark of the Danish national team, seeing Eriksen getting the ball in a DM position and passing it back to a defender instead of turning is normal, the team plays so slow at times that the players tend to look like the have fallen asleep. The opposition wasn´t fierce and the last game against the Faroe Islands demonstrated slow motion football at its finest. Hjulmand also likes established names, being from Portugal I can with confidence state that is the worst thing you can do.

I was studying their squad today and damn it’s rock solid. Need the right tactics and energy and I see them getting to the last 8.

As a Dane I think you nailed it. Schmeichel is untouchable. He is a national hero and will stay as first choice even though he might not be the best. But he is a leader and pillar on the team. Probably his last tournament for Denmark. My guess is a 5-3-2 or 3-5-2 Schmeichel - goal J. Andersen, S. Kjær, A. Christensen - center backs J. Mæhle, V. Kristiansen - wing backs C. Eriksen, P. Højbjerg, M. Hjulmand - mid Wind or A. S. Olsen with of cause R. Højlund in attack. But the strength of the Danish team is flexibility that they can change formation in the middle of the game. If they need an extra midfielder they move A. Christensen from defensive to midfield a potion he has been playing lately at Barcelona. I also think this Eriksens last tournament for Denmark. O’Riley will take over for him in the future.

As a Dane i have no high hopes for the Euro's this year, our biggest advantage is our homefield and even that is being watered down because of fake fans. Our coach has done everything he promised he wouldn't do, so 90% of Danes doesn't support him, i've defended him for years, my family called me an idiot but i believed in him, but i have absolutely no respect for the man anymore, he's Morten Olsen 2.0.

i think the problem with the team right now is, that we play with a team that is almost identical to the team we played with in 2021, even though it went horrable in Qatar we didn't make any major changes to the team, and i think that Kasper Hjulmand might be a little scared to make the generation change which which a lot of other national teams already have done

this time i fully agree with you, mike. denmark is a really good team on paper, but in fact they are struggling to toss out their opponent. they could dominate the game, but found it difficult to score. denmark have been lack of creativity, play too much passes, but still couldnt create good chances for themselves to score. i think they are confused and like clueless how to score. the best thing to do with denmark team is play more directly because they have so many energetic midfielder that could win the ball back and crashing the box. since they lack of creative and excellent winger so i think 352 could suit them best with excellent flying wing-backs in roerslev, maehle, bah and kristiansen. here is my denmark starting xi : schmeichel; andersen, christensen, nelsson; bah, hjulmand, hojbjerg, o'riley, maehle; poulsen, hojlund. the most difficult thing is choosing whos gonna start in the midfield 3 and partner for hojlund up front. im choosing poulsen bcs he is good pinning the opposition cb with him and create space for hojlund or distract them from hojlund. skov olsen or robert skov are a good option too. and for me the most underrated denmark player for me are lindstrom and lazio's isaksen. it will be difficult for them to finish first at their group, but finish second is really doable. if they get thru their group by finishing 2nd or 3rd, they should be prepared to face some giants in round of 16. i got a feeling there will be some surprises in this group as slovenia will finish above them by goals difference. but they still qualify as one of best 3rd placed team, so yeah they will be routed in ro16. the possible maximum reach they could get is quarterfinals, and thats okay, its good for them.

Been a massive fan since 1986 - they have definitely struggled to find top form during this qualifying campaign I think you have summed it up perfectly - regards this current team there are a few players in Isaksen, , Dreyer, O'Riley that will probably make the 26 but are probably not going to start, its been a tough time for Damsgaard since 2021, injury set back and has not really settled at Brentford although he has played more and looked better towards the end of the season - really want to see Skov Olsen perform looks a great player but again a bit injury prone - questions over Eriksen and Kjaer (lack of playing time / injuries etc) obviously the key fixture is the first one get a good result and confidence will rise, if not the group will be tricky, they have quality all over the pitch on paper but its just getting the team to click at the right time, we will see the team will definitely be well supported in Germany so that should give them a massive boast, Qatar was very very disappointing - from dark horses and in pretty good form to well a team that just didn't look like a team at all, the manager picked players carry injuries or lacking match time hoping for a big improvement this time round 🇩🇰👍

Rønnow hasnt been as good this season as he was in the last season. Mads Hermansen won the Championship with Leicester and was in TOTY. He should be second choice.

Spot on Michael!! You obviously follow Danish football closer than most journalist in Denmark, and have a finetuned understanding of international football. Can’t wait to see the rest of your videos preparing me for the finals this summer. My opinion is that we (Denmark) have a great coach - properly the best we have ever had. The biggest problem for the team is, that our midfielders are not played between the lines of the opposing team, but instead run down on the defensive line to receive the ball, giving fewer options to pass the ball forward. And we have lost the ability to move sideways in front of the ball, so right now, our best weapon is counter attacks. And that really only comes into play, when we meet teams how want’s to play aggressive and holds possession of the ball, and besides Denmark who tries to play that way (but can’t), and Spain - the best team in the world to play that kind of football - there is very few national teams, who plays to have massive possession with the risks it contains. We have an obvious replacement for Kasper Hjulmand when he leaves - Bo Henriksen. Henriksen does miracles with whatever team he manages. He is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to deploy the needed tactics, but what he does better than anyone, is understanding how to encourage his players with self-confidence like no other coach! He - and his teams - just wins more games than they should have won. We have just gotten the enjoyment back surrounding the Danish national team after decades of depressing coaches and offended players, and that is mostly to Kasper Hjulmands credit. He really want’s to play football worth seeing!!!! If DBU (the Danish football association) decides to focus on getting even better results to go with the new found popularity, there is no way around Bo Henriksen.

Good analysis. Though a big reason for the danish team underperforming and being inconsistent, is too many key players warming the bench in their clubs, have been injured and/or are past their best. Eriksen, Højbjerg, Delaney, Damsgaard, Kjær, Schmeichel, Yussuf... And O'Reilly didn't even get picked for the squad 😮

If it was my choice then My national team would play a 4-2-3-1 narrow with focus down the middle of the field. When playing teams they should beat i would go 4-2-2-2. fullbacks would bomb down the sides to give the play width and assists. I would also play into the box with short passes to keep the ball. Pressure wise i would go fairly high pressure to a midt block and high block when favorits. I think we have the team for it and release the attracking players to only focus on pressure and attacking plays. The 4-2-3-1 is very defensively solid and you don't need a great team to be effective at it.

Right now the Danish team doesn't work without a midfield fighter like Delaney - look at results with or without a fit Delaney in the qualification.

They play like they are afraid of controlling the ball. As a Dane I hope for the best but I only see us barely qualify through the group at best. Personally, i feel the lineup should be a 5-3-2 with the wing-backs being attacking I would go for Hermansen in goal with Rønnow as sub Centrebacks would be Christensen, Andersen, Nelsson with Kjær and Nicolaisen as sub Wing-backs would be Bah and Skov Olsen with Mæhle and Højer as subs Midfield would be Hjuldmand, Eriksen and Højbjerg with o'riley and lindstrøm as subs when the older players get tired Attacking would be Højlund and Braithwaie with Wind as sub But thats just me personally

I really want to see hermansen in goal (I know it won’t happen). Just promoted with Leicester as their first choice keeper while schmeichel plays for anderlecht and rønnow is in poor form for union. Likewise i also want to see o’riley playing. Making the team more offensive

The expectations of Denmark is always getting to the knock outs. From there anything can happens which Denmark has shown 3-5 times before. However if we go through it's most likely from the second spot and then it's most likely Germany and then Spain, Italy or Croatia. So we probably won't get further than out of the group at most.

As a dane - we don’t expect much from the team really. Team is getting old, and Hjulmand refuses to add younger players.

IMO Matt O'Riley should have had a chance to start in the Danish lineup. However Matt O'Riley has played too many games and scored too many goals as a midfielder for Celtic so Kasper Hjulmand didn't select him for the Euros.

danes needs someone spectacular to lead, like bendtner, they all played around him which is why he was so good on the national team. højlund is almost there, hopefully he will shine.

They're in an evenly balanced battle for second. I don't think they have some difference makers like Slovenia and Serbia do but I think they have the best 1 to 11. I think they should have enough to go through but I think the knockouts will be too difficult for them. At the last Euros, even if Danny Makkelie went to monitor and felt that the double contact on Sterling wasn't enough to be a penalty, England had control of that extra time. England had the depth to sub on just as good players that Denmark weren't able to fur fill when Damsgaard and other players were taken off. So if Makkelie felt there wasn't enough in the penalty, England would have still had extra energy and quality on the pitch that would have played to their advantage in the rest of extra time or penalties.

As A dane I hope we win it all, but... I struggle to see how we get past the group stage. Yes we have overall decent players, but we lack creativity and we lack understanding and runs for that creativity. And that is why we lack the goals to win sometimes easy games.

I disagree with only playing 1 system, especially for subtop and lower ranked teams. As the dutchies are innovating footbal with their "Total Mixed System Footbal". In which they shift between systems to be tactically surprising and to compensate their flaws. The danish do the same to increase their chances for the win. So I think that Koeman used a 1-3-5-2 blueprint underneath which shifts in 1-5-3-2 or 1-4-3-3 or 1-3-4-3 with players that can play on multiple positions. So to have that extra abillity with surprising factor and multiple tactical variaties you'll have extra cards to play.

I think 4-3-3 against when they need to apply preasure and 3-5-2 when they need ro control. That should be interchangable during the match depending on how it plays out. As a dane i think the time with delaney and eriksen is over. Eriksen is more of a 6 now and they keep looking for him but he doesnt have the same dynamism- Eriksen should be a back up player. If iq doesnt work and they need to grind they can put delaney in. Young midfielders are too good to be denied. Personally i would zero problem with us ending 4th in the group id it means we are making a generationer change and a formational change to fits Højlund, so that they can get some proper cup experince before the world cup in 26 with the expectation to top in 2028. The team from 21 has primed and its time for a new er, with new strategy and we need to show patience. Hopefully Hjulmand sees that, because he doesnt make the Switch and we get grouped again, then he need to get sacked.

I'm danish and i'm really afraid for how it will go to the Euros. We need a new manager, who never pick the same players. Every football fan in Denmark is annoyed about why O'Riley from Celtic isn't in the squad for the Euros. I'm totally sure he could make a difference for Denmark at the Euros. Think it's a bit much to say the midfield doesn't have the legs. Eriksen has lost a bit of that, but Højbjerg and Delaney can still run. If Hjulmand plays, I think Hjulmand will stay deep, and Højbjerg will push forward. Hjulmand is to my knowledge the more defensive part of a pivot. I think the issue with any of our midfield trios, is the lack of attacking movement. There is no 10's, unless you play Damsgaard as central midfield, but it's 6's and 8's. In terms of attackers, Skov Olsen, Daramy, Damsgaard aren't strikers. If you want a duo up front, it's Højlund w/ Wind or Poulsen. My suggestion would be: Schmeichel Andersen - AC - Vestergaard (I'm okay with Kjær) Mæhle - Eriksen - Højbjerg - Kristiansen Skov Olsen - Højlund - Wind Wind will then act as somewhat of a 10, as he likes to do, connecting play. Skov Olsen can bring that extra bit of flair and skill. AC can step up as a 6, as we saw before. So an asymetric 3-4-3.

For some reason there seems to be a complete lack of confidence, especially offensivly, there isn't any flow or chemistry and except for Højbjerg no one takes any risks and more than likely just pass the ball backwards. Really need some confidence and offensive creativety. Defensively it is for the most part fine.

One underrated problem for Denmark is that our players play in very different types of clubs and systems daily. If you look at the usual suspect in international football (esp Spain and Germany), they either have a lot of players in the same club or they play less tactically complex styles (Pogba over the top through ball to Mbappe)

And yeah agreed on their expectations i think they are far too talented to be grouped so for them getting to the next round and either losing right there or going one round after will be the aim for them coz getting grouped would be a failure and they probably sack the coach coz that would now be two tournaments in which they had the quality to make it out the group and didn't.

I think there’s a chance that we go through as 2nd and then gets knocked out and to me that would be on par with current expectations, they’re not better than that. Hjulmand only knows one way to play football, And that's not working anymore. Our players lack confidence. but that's what you get when you hire a coach with close to no international experience, And only has 1 game plan. But when it works, It's quite entertaining.

I hope to surprised, but realistically I do not think we will go far. We play without ideas or passion.

I'm from Denmark. Have no expectations for that team. A team of old worn out players who are only there for their past qualities. There are younger players with more drive and energy who don't get the chance, unfortunately. Former national coach Morten Olsen said that players are selected according to how they fit in socially!. A Dane "Messi or Ronaldo would probably never get the chance" Doesn't want to look at the boring "playing across football and camaraderie"

The spark isn't there atm, and the spark is whats needed for Denmark to perform. Since the Quatar media issue the Team hasn't been itself. There isn't the willpower that the team used to have and when players are unwilling to make the runs to get back in defense it won't work out. What Denmark's success the past years have been build on wasn't nice play with the ball but rather a will to never give up and a lot and i mean a lot of it isn't over till it's over. To have a team like this not click I think it'll be better than last time, but at best just get out of the group stage imo.

The weakest link in the national team, is our manage Kasper Hjulmand and its showing more and more, as the old team from Hareides time is aging. Hjulmand, the manager, has been riding on the success created by Åge Hareide, the previous manager. He has brought nothing new to the team and refuse to go with anything except what he already knows works. The team for this EURO is based on "the same old ones", who aren't fully fit nor has been playing particulary well this season for most parts. Leaving out a player like Matt O'Riley, who has been good for like 15-18 goals AND assists this season for Celtic, but taking Christian Eriksen, who has barely played a full game all season for Man U, is just sad. At the team revealing, a journalist straight up asked "Are the players you have chosen fit enough for this?", to which he just replied, "yes." and asked for a new question.

Denmark used to be such an exciting team to watch. Now it's super dull. Based on what I've seen in qualifying I think they are in danger to flop and bow out again in the group stage.

We wont make it past the group stages, the team has gotten to old, and to slow. Most of the players are no longer playing regular in the club teams, and many of them has become injury prone. Højlund should hae stayed in Italy for at least one more season, instead he choose the money and a worse team in a better league. Eriksen is over and done. Simon Kjær has been to much injured the last season. Schmeichel has become to old, and is no longer the best choice, but will play every single game anyways, like the rest of the players I have mentioned.

Very good video. Some stats: I believe in 5 years, Denmark only lost twice. Both times to Belgium. That's not a bad statistics. But we did loose to France at the World Cup, after previously having beaten them twice in a row. If we had Mbappe, they would have lost 5-0.
