Euro Nymphing High Water, Holsinger's Fly Shop

It's finally trout season here in Pennsylvania and some of my favorite water has opened back up for fishing. In this episode it's one day after a big thunderstorm and the water is just starting to clear up and the water drop. These are my favorite conditions to get out and do some Euro nymphing. This is a perfect time to be on the water because the trout usually have the feed bag tied on and are heavily eating. What some people don't realize is the trout have moved from their common lies and into calmer water. I hope this video encourages you to get out on the water more and in times you may have stayed home thinking it wasn't worth the trip that day.

Thank for posting this Shawn. Opening day was crazy this year in Pennsylvania. We didn’t even find out about it until a few hours after it opened from a Facebook posting. I think it was a good move though by the Fish commission given the current conditions and at least down here in southeastern Pennsylvania the poaching was unbelievable! The streams were just as crowded before opening day as after. Looking forward to seeing the tying video for this fly but it looks pretty straightforward

I agree that high water pushes trout (smallmouths, too) to the bank, and a right hander could fish a lot of the good water in your video while standing on the bank.

Nice vid Shawn. Looking forward to the videos you mentioned about fishing new water. I moved to the western part of Mass this winter and am exploring new water. I'm Way out of my comfort zone but having fun. Keep it up. Frank

Frank Monroe it is definitely something I need to do. It is so easy to just drive down the road and hit the holes you know. Unfortunately that doesn’t make you a better fisherman

I'm curious what your set up was, Shawn. Really want to try this tactic. Not sure I want to invest a fortune into another rod reel combo right now though.

Looks like Ice dub and marabou. I fish a sparkle minnow that is similar, but I use wing n’ flash that your dad ordered for me. Wing n’ flash is the bees knees for sparkle minnows. Softer and better movement than angel hair or ice dub. Slays big trout. You guys should carry it full time in the shop hint hint.

Nice video Shawn! Like the on the water stuff to go with the tying. Could you do a video on your setup? Euro nymph line and leader or straight mono and sighter.

Kevin Berardino I’ve posted on social media before what stream I was at and got “hate mail”’from it. It’s easier just to keep quiet plus some of the streams I fish are class A streams and can’t handle extra publicity.

Nice video bud. I use a bigger very similar. Almost the exact same fly to be honest and I crush fish on then. Give me a shout if you want to hit up big fishing creek or little pine sometime.

Is this a Catch-and-Release-Only area? Are any of the trout wild or are they all stockers?

Ronald Runeric no this is a put and take section but they don’t stock it in this area however a lot of stocked fish get pushed into this area. There are also great numbers of wild browns and even some wild bows. If this stream would be catch and release it would be a great fishery.

Hughie Graves that sucks. Like your gonna get the flu from a fish. I hope if anything comes out of all of this it’s common sense. We need to get back to common sense
