What I really appreciate about your videos from Europe is that you point out things I've always been taking for granted since I grew up here (e.g. I've always assumed it's nice going outside around christmas everywhere..) Merry Christmas from Switzerland!

In Germany, on christmas eve, everything closes at about 1 pm including most restaurants and many bars. You should inquire before then about where you can eat lunch and supper. If you are in a village you might end up having to buy something in the morning to eat in your hotel room that night because the one tavern/restaurant in the village is closed. Even in the cities you might end up eating christmas eve supper at Burger King. Also public transportation in the cities goes to a very limited schedule about that time. Some routes a bus comes by once every two hours. If you have connecting buses that are not synchronised, that could be a problem. Wait two hours for a bus, get off at the transfer point and you have just missed the connecting bus and you have to wait another two hours. And nowhere to go to the toilet. Usually in the boonies where you CANNOT find a taxi. Or, if you had the intelligence to learn the taxi dispatch telephone number you call a taxi and wait 2 1/2 hours because many of them are also taking the day off and the rest have more passengers than they can handle because so many other tourists did not know better and all want taxis home. It happened to me once in Berlin. If you are staying in, for instance, a downtown hotel in Munich, do not go to the far outskirts and wait until two pm to start your trek back to the hotel because you might need hours to do so.

What happened to your rule about getting the HATES out of the way first Mark? 😀 I've been to Europe three times for Christmas and the only thing I would reiterate is finding a nice place for 12/25 dinner can be a huge challenge. Paris was fine but all my target restaurants in Prague and Warsaw were closed. Great video as usual. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! 🍾

It's Christmas, what do you expect? Most places close for Christmas Day and often Boxing Day (26/12). It is a time to be with the family. A few restaurants open for Christmas lunch, but that is usually a very small proportion and you often have to book well in advance. For most it is tradition for the family to cook together at home.
@tosht2515
@tosht2515 7 жыл бұрын
+David Wright What did I expect? Well, exactly what I anticipated...many higher end restaurants would be closed. Just to reiterate, we had zero issues with Dec 25th dining in Paris and although Warsaw and Prague were both challenges, there were still many places from which to choose. Full discloser, one was a pub and the other was a hotel restaurant which are always open during all holidays.

Did last Christmas in Zurich, Switzerland. The most difficult thing was how many necessary things were closed, and the great thing was the Christmas markets (the main one closed the 23rd, the wonderful one at the train station closed at the end of the day, Dec 24). Spent Christmas day in Bern, which was fabulous, but there was nowhere open to eat lunch!

In some locations, mainly outside the centre of the great cities here in Portugal, Christmas Decorations remain until late January by mere laziness Some years ago, In my city there was some spots where Christmas lights were visible in February, they only took them out in Carnival. happily things improved recently at least around here at normally in early January they start taking out the illuminations.

I live in Paris, near where you were when filming this video and I really appreciate the way you look at France because we don't seem to have a good image of our own country. Great Video and informative as usual! :) Can you do a Video on travelling in the US around the holiday season? In Germany though people are not back to work on the 26th. We have the 25th and the 26th as 1st and 2nd Christmasday (1. und 2. Weihnachtsfeiertag) and both of them are national holidays and like sundays with businesses closed except for restaurants, gas stations etc. It's the same on the 1st of January. Since the main celebration (opening of the gifts, family dinner) in Germany already happens on christmas eve, shops have different limited opening hours and close early between 1-3pm. It's the same on the 31st of December.

Hi. I am thinking of going to Stockholm during Christmas season. Do you know how many days are most places closed ? Like do they usually just close on the 25th or they actually closed for a several days. I'm just worried I'll be having trouble finding food to eat.
@happyswedme
@happyswedme 7 жыл бұрын
swede here, the main Christmas celebration takes place the 24th so thats the date anything is most likely to be closed but since Stockholm is so central to commercial activity and cosmopolitan (compared do the rest of Sweden) some parts might not close (do check on forehand in case there is something you dont want to miss). I can also inform you that it is somewhat customary to take a week of between the 24th and the 1st jan known as mellandagarna so this period may see some attractions closed HOWEVER stores will usually have sales this period (mellandagsrea) so they may be open.final pisce of advice is that the festivities begin 4 sundays before Christmas eve (första advent) and culminate on the eve so it is probably more fun to visit before Christmas for Christmas markets, nobel dinner(10th) and lucia(13th)

hey, Mark. Speaking of trains...how far would you travel on the trains for a DAY TRIP? What is WORTH the time/travel? and what is out of the question? Being from the U.S., and not totally understanding geography over there... I'm not sure what would be considered reasonable travel. between countries? stay in only one? What might you think?
@chase123456ist
@chase123456ist 8 жыл бұрын
+Mc Kenna Why would you say that we don't know geography? Because we don't think Europe is the center of the world? Stereotypes make a person look ignorant and the regurgitation of ignorance leaves you in the past, like Europe. Americans are the most traveled people in the world and spend the most money for travels in the world. I never see a European in The U.S., never.

UZIMike ! Mike I meant that I don't know the geography of Europe well enough to know can I go someplace else within a day trip. Can I go to Italy if I was visiting an area in France? is that a day trip? is that not a day - that's you if you've got a week. That's what I mean. If you're visiting Chicago, taking a drive to Philadelphia is not a day trip. That's what I meant. what is considered a day trip in Europe by train. I wasn't commenting that other people don't know geography or other groups don't know geography but that I'M not up on my European geography.

Ca va, les "hates" sont dérisoires à côté des "loves" ; The "hates" are derisory compared to the "loves". Come on, we're in Europe, even though we tend to become slaves, we still live and so, around Christmas and New Year's Eve we maintain human contacts and not only commercial relations ;-)

I think its not a bad thing to close everything on 24. - 27. ... those are days of piece and quiet. A lot of people in Czech are not Christians but we still trying to honor this time... and also... people want to spend those days with their families.. not to be at work. And just another little think to say... You are drinking only hot wine in Europe? There is plenty drinks to make you be happy and warm... In czech its Grog for example ( Czech rum with hot water and lemon) and meny others. Also i believe it would be nice to say not everyone have Santa. And people actually dont really like Santa in here. In Czech we have Little Baby Jesus... in Belgium, France and others its Father of Christmas.. In Russia its something like Grandpa of winter (have no idea how to translate Děda Mráz.. sorry to all Russians :) ) .... Well.. I just think people should know this :) Thanks for your videos. Totally agree with everything youre saying about Czech and THANK you for knowing Czech Rep is not Eastern Europe :D :) P.S. sorry for my English :)
