Wow; 2 thumbs up for this one!For quite some time I’ve been frustrated that the only information the experts would share about EFB is gloom and doom: terribly contagious, incomplete response to antibiotics, and no consensus on how to manage it. None of the great KZfaq beekeepers seemed to talk about having EFB. Maybe they worry it would damage their reputation if they admitted they had foulbrood infection in their operation. Yet I know that anyone who manages a significant number of hives over enough years is definitely going to experience EFB. So thank you for letting us ordinary beekeepers out there know that it’s not the end of the world, and there’s something that can be done. And that even the most successful beekeepers can experience it!

Bob, this is a question on a different topic. There's a lot of talk about mice getting into hives. How are you preventing this? I see you have most of your hives on the ground basically. My understanding is mice can't get into the hive if the opening is only 3/8" wide. Is this how you keep the bottom board? Very grateful for your videos. I'm in my second year.
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 9 ай бұрын
That's correct. All of our entrances are 3/8 inch which the vast majority of mice cannot get in. It's one of the main reasons I like 3/8.

Maybe I missed it, but how much of the mixture are you putting on the 1/2 shop towel? Or are you saturating the whole roll in the oil mixture similar to OA/glycerin towel production (ala Randy Oliver)? Also, what are you thoughts on combining this mixture with the OA/glycerin shop towel mixture for a 2-in-1 application against varroa and EFB? My initial thoughts would be that it would dilute the OA mixture too much and affect the efficacy of that treatment against varroa.

It’s what Bob uses and what I’ve been using now for over four years AND SWEAR BY IT! I truly believe it alone is one of the main reasons my hives thrive all years. And yes, it can and should be used with other treatments because it was designed to help improve the guts of the bees when faces with stressors. Once a month is the recommended dose and sprinkled on top of the frames. But once every three weeks is fine. But nothing shorter than that. All the best.

I have eight colonies. It would really help the many small beekeepers who watch your wonderful videos, if you would tell us how to make very small amounts of the treatment You are using. It's going to take some math to figure out the concentrations from one gallon of canola oil, 200 ml of tea tree oil, 200 ml of eucalyptus oil, and 100 ml of camphor oil. If I want to treat eight hives, how much do I need to make?
@davidbarnes936
@davidbarnes936 9 ай бұрын
Here’s my calculations for a scaled down version of the recipe. 1/2 cup canola oil 6.25 ml (1.3 tsp) tea tree oil 6.25 ml (1.3 tsp) eucalyptus oil 3.0 ml (3/5 tsp) camphor oil

@@davidbarnes936 Thank you! Do you know: 1. How much of that liquid will be absorbed into half of a blue shop towel? 2. Can we use a regular paper towel, or, why is a blue shop towel the "standard" way to put it in a hive?
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 9 ай бұрын
Regular paper towels can work. Blue shop towels are just a bit tougher and hold more liquid. Also the bees don't chew them up and remove them as easily.

In my very early years of beekeeping with 10 hives I encountered European Foulbrood. I didn't know what it was exactly at the time. Fearing it was American Foulbrood and being so paranoid of how contagious it was and the spreading of it to my other colonies I did the unthinkable. I buried alive my 10 frame double deep boxes with bees still in them and with still a good population into the ground. To this day when I walk past the slightly depressed piece of ground, with grass growing on it, I still think and feel what a unfortunate mistake I made. 😢 🐝 On a happier note Pittsburgh Steelers or Las Vegas Raiders? Not much of a choice. Lol.

American Foulbrood in Nebraska, USA is to be burned with the exception of wood supers, bottom boards, top covers which may be scorched with fire very thoroughly. I don't trust scorching woodenware. It is much better to just burn it all. European Foulbrood doesn't have any required treatment - as far as I know.
