Mastering consonant sounds are essential to understanding and speaking European Portuguese. While many sounds are similar in English, there are a handful that are extra challenging to learn and pronounce, including "s", "r", "lh", "x" and "z".

Fun fact, in old Portuguese "ch" used to be pronounced as in English "tsh". "Sh" sound would be represented unequily by "x" (as it sounds like in words like "xaile", "xadrez"). But eventually "ch" become "sh" and "x" gained multiple other possible pronunciations.

Thank you Joel and Rui for creating this valuable content. I have always been adamant about the difference between European and Brazilian Portuguese. My ancestors are from the Azores and speak European Portuguese. Unfortunately my father didn't want his children to speak Portuguese because my mother doesn't. Watching your videos has given me the incentive to learn the language of my ancestors...Thank you!

Thank y'all so much for these videos! My partner and I live in South Korea, but two years ago we visited Portugal (Lisbon, Porto, Sintra) and absolutely fell in love! We finally found a teacher in Seoul that teaches European Portguese (native Korean, but studied in Lisbon), so it's great to have these videos with a native Portuguese speaker as a supplement. Unfortunately, not many Portuguese people here in South Korea (although we have had the pleasure of meeting some Brazilians), but we can't wait to return to Portugal when everyone can travel more freely and explore the country even more! Thank y'all once again and wish you two all the best!

Travailler en équipe comme vous faites est sage et donne de bons résultats (à mon avis); en plus, ça rend toute l’affaire plus le-fonne. On apprend en même temps l’anglais et le portugais avec vous deux. J’avais appris un peu de portugais brésilien longtemps passé mais asteur il me semble que la variation européenne pourrait être plus simple ayant plus de similarités avec le français. Qui sait, un jour je risque d’être capable de même écrire « em português »? Merci pour votre vidéo! (Quel bébé adorable!)

Actually "n" will be a cue for nasalasing the previous vowel everytime it's at the end of a syllable. Basically, it's the same of saying, everytime it's followed by any consonant (except H, because there it is representing the "nh" sound). Ex: "concreto", "condição", "confusão", "cansar"... Some rules regarding N, which are useful for spelling, not so much reading, is N will never be at the end of a word, nor it will be before a "b" or a "p". In those cases you must use an M (in those cases it will mean exactly the same an N there would: nasaling the previous vowel, but Portuguese spelling rules dictate an M is used in these situations, and it does not have exceptions, besides maybe non adapted loanwords).

S will have a true S sound if it's the middle of a word and it's preceded by any consonant as well (we can see the "double ss" as an extension of these actually, because there you have an S after a consonant which also happens to be an s). Other examples beyond the double S: consoante, cansar, senso, arsénio, Elsa.

I would prefer all cases of c pronunciation in one series :) It is a little thing, but it really helps to make things more consistent. Would bvew cool to follow this logic everywhere. Anyway thanks!
