As a Portuguese I have to say we're usually not the best at giving directions 😂 even I get confused. That's why many try to take you there personally 😅

Haha so true! Been in that situation so many times. And often when you're not alone, even if you're starting to explain something, your friend/partner gets in the way of the explanation and it makes it so much more confusing! Better just take them there ourselves :D

Uma das coisas que achei surpreendente em Portugal (e depois encantadora) foi a frequência com que as pessoas me queriam levar ao lugar sobre o qual eu perguntava. Acho que pensavam que qualquer pessoa que falasse português tão mal como eu nunca compreenderia as suas instruções.

É mais pela falta de talento dos portugueses a dar indicações 😂. Se eu for para a mesma direcção eu acompanho sempre a pessoa até lá ou pelo menos uma parte do caminho, portugueses ou estrangeiros.

That is so beautiful to hear your introduction followed by the native speakers answers. I am a native English speaker and speak Spanish as a primary second language and some very basic French from school. I'm trying to learn Portuguese after having travelled there briefly and feeling hugely underdone in my preparation and ability some years ago. Thank you for your dedication to learning languages and advice as I am very keen to make up for my poor earlier attempt at speaking everyday Portuguese in Coimbra. Un abrazo y saludos

Perfeito para ajudar o turista anglo. O problema do português a dar direções é o ser pouco objetivo, perdendo-se numa multitude de pormenores irrelevantes, muitas vezes. Por isso é melhor levar pessoalmente o turista ao local indicado, se não for muito longe. Ou fazer um desenho.

Nicely done. Coincidentally, whenever and wherever I am walking here in Portugal, just like Liz, I always wave my arms to the left or right prior to making a turn. Also forwards and back when walking straight ahead. Unfortunately, it does not stop people from wandering into my path.

@André Filipe Oliveira Eu vou te responder a altura da sua ignorância. O brasileiro, assim como qualquer outra pessoa pode falar Inglês, Alemão , Italiano entre outros idiomas. Todo idioma carrega suas diferenças particulares, como: Pronúncia; Sotaque; Gramática e Ortografia; e palavras com significados diferentes. Você acha que todas as palavras no Brasil tem o mesmo sentido em Portugal ? Apesar de termos herdados a língua portuguesa, cada país tem suas diferenças culturais . Não vejo erro de aprender a cultura e costumes do país da minha ancestralidade .

I have to say as a native English speaker, i often see channels saying speak with a British accent like this etc and its a way over the top posh English accent that nobody has, but this lady i would say speaks perfect English and accent because its not forced it would be hard to even know shes portuguese. Also her videos are great for learning Portuguese 👍👍👍

OMG - I have been watching your guidance tips for sometime and if no one has told you how valuable your advice is, Please let me be another to reinforce how valuable your spot-on advice is on so many levels. Please never stop adding to your list and line-up of invaluable language learning tips. This is an important one and everyone needs to know about asking directions. I've struggled with Português and languages have always come easy to me, but this one is still above average in difficulty. You help substantially break down that challenge. Thank You, thank you, thank you. P.S. I'm also a Dog owner and couldn't help but notice two dogs pop out of the fountain at the end of your video. LOL. Cool video and definitely learned a few new words/phrases. Quick question, though. For the first two gentlemen 1:05, 1:27, the subtitles say "desculpe" (formal) but sounds like you're saying "desculpa" (Informal). Which one were you actually saying?

yes I was saying desculpa but decided to keep it consistent in the subtitles as I used both here in the video! It's best to use desculpe for people you don't know!

As a Portuguese person I was scared at first thinking you were to either speak spanish or butcher the pronounciation as many guides here on youtube are horrible but I was pleasantly surprised, ur accent is perfect and Im really happy to see foreign people so interested in my country

Acho que no minuto 3:27 o mais correto seria dizer “escadaria”, escada é algo mais circunstanciado, para construções enormes com vários degraus o mais correto é escadaria, sei que algumas pessoas podem chamar simplesmente escada mas acho que escadaria é mais apropriado no caso mencionado.

I think you answered a question I've wondered about, but didn't mention it. It's how you start the request - in English we'd say 'Excuse me', but that doesn't make sense in Portuguese. You started your enquiry with 'boa tarde' and sometimes, 'desculpe'.

Yes, the Portuguese prefer a greeting like bom dia or boa tarde. "desculpe" is like the equivalent of "excuse me"

i have noticed some mistakes she did: when she is adressing a stranger that is an adult, or a very old person, she should say "desculpe instead of "desculpa", now if she was adressing a child, a baby, or a teenager she should say "desculpa" instead of "desculpe", ik this bc im a native from the north :) Note: the child, teenager, or baby could also be a stranger

In Brazil we use the verb "ser" with the same meaning of "ficar": Onde é a estação do bondinho do Pão de Açúcar? 🌝

Fonte Luminosa (the fountain; "luminosa" because it is illuminated at night with large spotlights; btw the water was not running) / Alameda (the park) / IST (the building on top of the hill) = Instituto Superior Técnico (Faculty of Engineering). In general, the area is called Alameda (there's a subway station with the same name).

A terceira pessoa (a primeira mulher) diz ”à direita” mas mostra com a mão ”à esquerda” e diz ”à esquerda” e mostra com a mão ”à direita”. É assim mesmo com certas pessoas 😅😅😅😅

Ainda estou para ver um vídeo no KZfaq com o título: European France or European Spain or European English de resto continua , canais como o teu e do Léo são bons para a internet ensinar os jovens , sei que nasceste no Brasil e inclusive falas com os dois sotaques que a mãe brasileira também . Porque é que será que eu agora ando a receber coisas relacionada com Portugal nos meus recomendados, não me queixo ... só pergunto porque não vieram mais cedo. Alias eu sou dos arredores de Coimbra e incrível que pareça nunca dei direções assim, tenho mais por habito de indicar caminhos com marcos/monumentos/ruas/lojas fáceis de reconhecer. Serei só eu ? __ Why is it that only now i'm receiving Portugal related stuff on my recommendations, not that i complain ... just asking why they didn't come sooner. In fact i'm from around Coimbra and amazing as it sounds i never gave directions like that, i have the habit of always giving directions with landmarks/monuments/streets/stores easy to recognize. is it just me ??

Hi Liz, how the verb ficar will be conjugated if the question will be posed by a couple and/or addressed to a couple and/or will be about the location of couple of things? Thanks much.

In the sentence "onde fica o ....?" the subject is the thing that we want to know the location. For example "onde fica o cinema?" the subject is "cinema". The conjugation of the verb "ficar" is in the third person singular -> "fica". If you want to know the location of a couple of things the verb will be plural -> "onde ficam o cinema e a estação de metro?". The conjugation of the verb is independent if the question is posed by a single person or a couple or addressed to a single person or a couple. Only if you want to complicate a little bit with a second verb (that has other subject) 😂 like "pode me dizer onde fica o cinema?" OR if address to a couple "podem me dizer onde fica o cinema?".

🤣🤣🤣 O meu pobre sentido de orientação também funciona assim. Essa é uma das razões que me faz acompanhar a pessoa até ao local pretendido. No meu caso particular, com o pessoal de cá, aviso logo: siga os meus gestos e não o que digo. Sou uma anedota com estas cenas. 😂

Desculpe and com licença both work for getting attention, they can both loosely translate to "excuse me" which is how we'd do it!
