On alheira you are pronouncing a- lh-i-eira. Drop the i and for the lh crunch up the tongue and put it on the roof of your mouth. Great pronunciation on the nasal sounds on The opções, s at the end of croquetes! Fabulous!!!

Cheryl, you did great. Your pronunciation is good. That lh combination and ei like in alheira is a tough one and those combinations are frequent in the language. It's one that I still find to be a bit of a challenge. If we keep at it though, our pronunciation will definitely improve.

Just a hint: when a portuguese 'asks' the end of the sentence goes up in the entonation. If not is affirmetive. Also we use very much the particle "é que" then, if you want to ask "o que contém" the way we construct the sentence will be "o que é que contém ?" or, better "que ingredientes tem?" Also we do not say "contem produtos de animais?" rather "contem produtos animais?" About vegan/vegetarian you must refer to a subject in the sentence. If you miss to mention to whom the sentence refers to, the person you are talking to will be confused unless you already made clear you are the vegan/vegetarian or any other attribute as it may be. Then you should say "eu sou vegana/vegetariana [ gorda / magra // alta/baixa]", etc. There is always a 'problem' with the sound "lh" when non portuguese speakers use it. Try not to insert a "i" in the middle. As pronounced what we hear is "alhieira" not "alheira". You are making difficult, easy things ! Regardless all the above I should consider you one of the best foreigner teacher, with a very good portuguese "music" whenever you speak. Congrats for your work and I hope your students realise you is the best teacher they could find to learn a not so easy language.

I was about to comment on the "lh" sound, but the comment above is spot on. No "i" in lh. Same goes for "nh" sound

Some Input: When I moved to Portugal, the situations in which I needed to learn Portuguese quickly were buying food in the supermarket (ordering fish from the fish monger with specific instructions , understanding vocabulary of food items, the weight scale, what ticket to pick at the ticket screen for meat, etc), checking in at the emergency room (the receptionist did not speak English), instructions for the hair dresser (no English) , bike repair shop and making phone calls to set up appointments (covid test, doctors, bike shop…), conversing with new neighbors , asking questions to the mail delivery staff, etc. . Most language videos on KZfaq often reduce the learning to restaurant or cafe situations, which is just one tiny aspect of the challenges a new language beginner faces.

I often cringe when people say the "s" at the end is a "sh" -- it's more of a "j". The "sh" I think comes from English-speakers who aren't sure what the final "s" sound reminds them of. I know it's a widely-used trick to help learners so I get why it's taught, but when I hear learners use "sh" at the end it sounds so awkward to me. For example, "casas", native speaker would not say "casash". I would say "casajjjj"-- ajjjjj. Does anyone else who is a native speaker agree? I really wish we could kick that "sh" stereotype to the curb lol But anyway, I love this channel, I show it to my husband for him to learn

i think the reason so many ex pats have a hard time learning Portuguese is because most locals speak English and they're eager to do so, therefore it's easy to fall into that comfort zone. i know ex pats from the UK who've been living in Portugal for decades and can't even form a basic sentence in the native tongue. it really boils down to motivation and a general level of interest in learning the language. because from a utility standpoint it's really not necessary.

To make a suggestion you can use "eu acho que..." (i think that.../i think) like "eu acho que deviamos ir embora deste sítio" (i think we must/should leave this place) When you are talking about somebody like "she's pretty" you use the pronoun like Eu acho - me bonito (i think im beautifull) Eu acho-te bonito (i think you are beautifull) Eu acho-o bonito (masculine) (i think he is beautifull) Eu acho-a bonita (i think she is pretty) (And then with we and they (with other pronouns)

Thanks so much, Liz! I have a gluten allergy (Celiac Dz) and I'm wondering if I can use some of these same phrases to communicate without gluten at restaurants. Do you have any other tips or advice?
@Ana-hz3lv
@Ana-hz3lv Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can adapt all the phrases that they said in the video. Gluten in portuguese is very similar ("Glúten") and the pronunciation is very similar, so you shouldn't have any problems. You can say "sou alérgica/o ao glúten" ou "tenho alergia ao glúten" (if you want to express yourself in a gender neutral way) and "Tem opções sem glúten?" (Do you have options without gluten?) or you can point to something on the menu and say "Isto tem glúten?" (Does this have gluten?). Products without gluten usually say "Gluten free" or "Sem gluten". However, if you're feeling akward you can always switch to english, most of the staff in tourist areas can communicate in english or can call someone that can answer better to your question. Your health and safety comes first! If you want an introductory phrase you can start like.

Hey liz! I loved your video. However make sure to notice that "lh" you should pronounce as a "ll" (double L as in spanish), this means, you should never pronounce the "L" in "LH", it's more like a "y" like "ya". LH (pt) = LL (es) = Y (en). Sou ALHEIRA = (phonetically) AYEIRA

Don't worry too much with the gender of words. If you get it wrong occasionally, natives may find it funny and may smile but they'll understand it perfectly. Some may correct you (some times politely, like repeating with the right gender), but most will not even try to correct it.
