Betty White was on TV before TV was on TV... seriously, she was on an experimental program before broadcasting started up on the west coast. She was the first woman host of a daytime TV talk show (on the air LIVE 33.5 hours/week), the first woman star of her own sitcom and successfully fought to have the first Black cast members on national television. Her career lasted more than 70 years and she worked constantly and created some of our most iconic characters. She truly was the Queen of American TV.

I always say that broadcast television should’ve been shut down after Betty’s death and everyone just go over to streaming series. It seems clear to me that TV was Betty Whites vehicle…it was the Betty White show. And now that she is gone, the show has jumped the shark with post Betty seasons that are just the studios milking the series for whatever they can get from it. We all know that TV belongs to Betty 😊

Yes, Betty was definitely a legend. And her sense of humor was second to none! Hilarious and spunky right to the end! When asked what she still wanted “to do” (at 95 YO), she replied, “Uhh, Robert Redford.” Golden Girls was an excellent TV series. You and your wife will enjoy it!

Betty White was born on January 17 and died on December 31, 2021. She was working on a special for her 100th birthday. Too bad she missed her 100th by just 17 days. She left a legacy. I remember her from Mama's Family, and then the Golden Girls. She was a pro! I'm sure the first person that was there when she went to heaven, was her beloved husband. Then they sat down with Estelle, Bea and Rue for cheese cake. 😊

I can’t believe no one has said this, but she was hilarious in Lake Placid. 😂 In 1954 she had Arthur Duncan, a black dancer, on her show. She was under immense pressure to not have him on, at the threat of tv stations not airing her show. Do you know what that beautiful woman did? She used him in anything she could! We miss her. She is a legend!

By the time Golden Girls came on the air in the 1980's, Betty White already had been a TV star for over 40 years. She was one of the early pioneers, hosted a daytime show, had her own sitcom in the 1950's which she produced, she and her husband Allen Ludden are also part of game show history, she was a parade host for decades, she was a star on the Mary Tyler Moore Show, and she had guest starred on many series. She continued working for another 30 years and starred in yet another successful series, Hot in Cleveland, and passed just short of her 100th birthday. Yes, she deserves her place as not only a TV pioneer and legend but probably as THE TV pioneer and legend. While Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett and others were pioneering women on TV, Betty's start in the early days of TV and her longevity make her unique. She had 22 Emmy nominations (TV's equivalent to an Oscar or BAFTA) and 8 wins over 63 years of nominations, a record for anyone for that many years between nominations. She was a good person with a sharp mind, quick with a joke, and universally beloved.

Yes Betty White is an American Treasure Legend, yes absolutely! She has been on television ever since television was invented! She had her own Betty White show back in the early 1950s and she has been on many many television shows especially The Mary Tyler Moore Show, the Carol Burnett Show, and on Golden Girls! She has also been on many television game shows because her husband was host and producer of a famous tv game show from the past called Password. She has also given alot of her own money to the Los Angeles Zoo because she was known for her work with animals also.

I was an extra in a movie with her she was very fragile(a man on set assisted her by her holding onto his arm). The instance it started filming you could see the strength and energy go over her entire body and a glow of personality take over. She was also kind and pleasant with the staff (Including we lowly extras).❤😂Such a character.

You wondered about those of us who watched Golden Girls when it was on and if we still miss it? Yes. It was on from 1985 to 1992, so that was when I was a kid. My parents weren't fans so we didn't watch it at home, but my paternal grandparents were (particularly my grandma) and never missed it. I used to watch it with them when I visited my grandparents on weekends (which was a regular thing, as they lived nearby). I watch old videos of the show and I can still hear my grandma's laugh every time I do.

By the way, the Dan Quayle joke at the beginning of the video that you didn't understand was mocking the Vice President (possibly candidate, not sure when the episode aired/was written) at the time. He had a reputation at first for being less than ideal for the job because his previous federal political history was shorter than many other Presidents/Vice Presidents. It was a talking point when he was announced as the Vice Presidential pick for George Bush, one of the arguments used against him. He later got a lot more jokes made at his expense, implying he was an idiot after he misspelled "potato". So, yeah... political joke from 1988.

The best way to explain Betty White is she was so remarkably good as a human that when she passed on New Years Eve not only did most people toast her memory at the strike of 12 but the outpouring of love afterward included how passing just a matter of days before her 100th birthday she was universally lauded as having gone too soon.

Amazing that the Golden Girls is making a pretty big comeback. Lots of people are watching it again. And yes, Betty White was a national treasure, may she RIP. Her acting career lasted for 70 years, so many generations of Americans grew up watching shows that she was in. I just read that she won her first Emmy in 1951 and her last Emmy in 2014. That's just incredible. She was also just a sweetheart. She did volunteer work with animals for many, many years and in her later years promoted animal causes. She was given an honorary doctorate degree by the Veterinary Medical Association for her many contributions to animal welfare and she was voted most popular and most trusted celebrity in the US, beating out Denzel Washington and Sandra Bullock, also two very beloved actors in the US. Even into her 80's she was still very much sought after for cameo appearances, because the TV executives knew that Americans loved to see Betty White. She did a Superbowl commercial for Snickers in her 80's where she's playing football, and it was a big hit with people. Look it up on KZfaq. You'll like it.

Through the years she did so with comedy, and kindness leading the way. In 1953 she produced her own Sitcom, Life With Elizabeth. This was beyond groundbreaking. She was the first woman to step into a production role and step into a role successfully. She had many hilarious and memorable parts like here on The Golden Girls such as her roles on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Hot in Cleveland, The Carol Burnett Show, The Bold and The Beautiful, and Boston Legal. She even had been in many films, some people didn’t even recognize because it was just her vocals. She never cared, acting was fun and she was always here to have that, fun. She married her true love Allen Ludden in 1963, they co-owned a production company together. He was in the business himself, having been on the Radio at the same time as Betty. He hosted quite a few game shows that had TV stars here in the US, and he did so right up until he passed away from stomach cancer in 1981. Betty always said when asked if she’d re-marry “Once you’ve had the best, who needs the rest?”. She continued on in the business and did MANY things in his honor, there are walkways in zoos, animal shelters in his name, and she knew one day they’d meet again. Now, I grew up with older Betty White. She has always seemed invincible. They need a kind and funny grandma, it’s Betty White. Guess who just signed as a lead in a sitcom at age 88, oh it’s Betty White (that ran until she was 93 by the way). She even made it through Co-Vid, with her little mask and check ins online. On Dec 25th (Christmas) she had a minor stroke at home, her medical team came and a nurse stayed with her. Allen’s kids were there and stayed with her. She never regained the strength to get out of bed, and she passed away on DEC 31st with her assistant present. She whispered “Allen” and then passed on. She was going to be 100 in 17 days. She lived 99.9 years of pure humor, kindness and compassion. If people would genuinely just stop everything that they are doing, calm their mind, and ask themselves how can I be more like Betty White today? Our world would improve tenfold. I miss her in new films and new series, but I am SO HAPPY that she is finally back with her husband.

Loved this show and just recently re-watched it all. All had great careers but Bea Arthur (Dorothy) and Betty White (Rose) were extremely well known and Betty is, as you've very much heard, an absolute legend. Decades of work, one of the sweetest (and dirties minded) women there ever was. Nothing but heart, talent, and sass. Animal welfare, racial & LGBT+ activism focused, was on radio and one of the earliest actresses on television til her death, pin-up model, military supply driver... and just entirely too charming. She is, indeed, absolutely adored in the US. ---- To help explain the premise of the show: The four women are roommates in Blanche's home. Dorothy - serious, level-headed, warm, daughter of Sophia Blanche - proudly slutty, smart, strong-willed Rose - air-headed, capable, heart of gold Sophia - mouthy, wise, very loving (though in clips it can seem otherwise), mother of Dorothy Blanche was renting out rooms, ended up with Dorothy and Rose, shortly after Sophia moved in, too. They quickly became best friends with Sophia kind of becoming everyone's mom. Beyond that, to avoid spoilers, I urge you to definitely watch the show itself with your wife. It's a lot of fun and focuses on the interpersonal lives of women living together while also at times addressing cultural/societal issues in a non-heavy-handed manner.

As you can see by the many comments, she is a legend. But she was beloved before Golden Girls. Well and after as well. Just Google Betty White and you can see how long her career spanned. But as for the Golden Girls, I think it was cast perfectly. Along with the humor it also tackles so difficult subjects. And some of the jokes are centered around that particular time period. Also, the character Rose Nylund is of Scandinavian descent growing up in Minnesota. The state of Minnesota is known for having a lot of immigrants from Scandinavian countries settle there. Yes, you and your wife should definitely watch the show. It is still played in America tv to this day. ❤ it.

In America, we have a phrase for people who are cherished for both their skill and their personal life; we call them "National Treasures". Betty White, Tom Hanks, Dolly Parton, Mr. Rogers, Yo Yo Ma... National Treasures actually surpass all the other legends because of that kindness and charm. They are people who have been part of our lives for a really long time, who helped shape us and enrich us. Millennials had a very special relationship with Betty, viewing her as a feisty and funny grandmother of sorts. The whole country mourned when she passed, and it felt like part of us had been ripped out.

Betty White was and hopefully always will be a national treasure. Aside from this show (which is totally worth watching), she was just a naturally funny person. You never knew what she would say next. She also did amazing work to raise money and promote animal welfare, which is something important to me as well, so that puts her near the top of my list of great human beings. ❤

Betty White was the first person ever to appear on television. She was the first woman to ever have her own show, and to produce her own show back in the late '40s. You should check out her time on the Mary Tyler Moore show where she played Sue Ann Nivens. She was hilarious on that show. Also her Snickers commercial from 2010 which really revived her career right after she had turned 90.

But there is a St. Olaf College (Northfield, MN) and at least one St. Olaf lake (New Richland, MN). Northfield is the town where the Jesse James gang tried to rob the bank and got all shot up.

Yes, Betty White is a legend. You might see if they have outtakes from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "Hot in Cleveland." There might be something out there with "Life with Elizabeth." You can probably find the show they presented that was intended for her 100th birthday.

She is a legend here. She not only did sitcoms but also was in the Guinness Book of World Records for most game show appearances. You should react to her bloopers from the show Hot In Cleveland. She was constantly cracking her costars up. Oh and her Saturday Night Live muffins skit!

Betty White was, indeed, beloved. I thought of her as a national treasure; I think that was the general consensus. And most of the people I knew *loved* the Golden Girls, each and every one. I'm so glad you've discovered this gem, and yeah, watch more!

Betty White was more than a legend. She was a national treasure R.I.P. She had a thing for Robert Redford that she commented on MANY, MANY TIMES. She was a huge advocate for animals. This was one of the best shows on tv. They don't make stuff like this anymore and it's sorely missed. Rose is the sweet and hilariously clueless one of the group. She's got all the crazy stories that basically don't apply to anything which is why the others joke her all the time. Don't get her going though because she could be just as sassy and sarcastic as the rest of them, lol.

Betty White was indeed a legend, but not just on the screen. She was an outspoken advocate for desegregation, african America/black rights and gay rights. She can come across as ditzy on tv, but she was incredibly wise and hilariously sarcastic. She is definitely missed!

She was also a big animal rights activist and volunteered her time at zoos and shelters making sure animals were treated with kindness and love. She often said if she'd not gone into acting, she would have liked to have been a forest ranger and work in nature (but women weren't allowed to be rangers back then, so she went into acting). She was a lovely human being inside and out. :)
