Of all the places in the world where you do find barrows, they picked the one region where they're not found. Even Korean or Polynesian barrow-wights would have been more historically accurate.

To pay devil's advocate, there are burial mounds far into central Asia, the so-called kurgans. Tolkien liked to scatter prehistoric remains across Middle-earth, often to the mystification of later populations, like with the Pukel-men of Dunharrow. However I have absolutely zero confidence in the world-building skills of the Amazon writers -- it would be like them to have barrow-wights with no barrows.
@TheZapan99
@TheZapan99 Ай бұрын
@@pwmiles56 Yeah, the Kurgans have been renamed the Yamnaya since WWII, because the bad guys used them in their Aryan origins theory and modern academia is too scared to keep using the term, but both refer to the Burial chamber / earth mound. In any case, they have nothing in common with Semitic cultures originating from South of the Caucasus mountains.

@@pwmiles56 Tbh, middle eastern region is also where the Ghoul mythology came from. The pronounciation of Ghul is also similiar to how you pronounce Gul in Morgul word for dark sorcery.

It can technically work being that wicked spirits sent by the Witch King could be Easterling thralls. But they are most likely Dunedain as in Aragon's folk.

To be fair, the artwork appears to have been commissioned by Empire independently of Amazon. The wight at the right does have a Rhun-ish kind of helmet. Yes they look female, possibly inspired by the dissolving witches in Series 1 (and I don't think we have seen the last of them either). But it is all stuff and nonsense. The only question is, have we got to the "apathy" stage which Shad has mentioned -- when we are so checked out we won't even click on the roasts, like with Dr Who. I guess not quite, and while the show still has viewers there will be work for you to do.

I don't have my books with me at the moment, but from what I remember the wights were originally men descended from the Numenoreans who settled in Arnor, and definitely not easterlings or southrons. I will be watching RoP, even though it's just going to be more of the same tripe. I want to see just how badly they will mangle my favourite stories and think they can get away with it; they can't and I won't let them! But do you need to review RoP? Not really, but everyone else will be.

Wait, are those The Barrow Wights from the Fellowship of the Ring? If so then the area for them to be is wrong. I thought they were Wights but from some Haradrim necropolis/burial ground (which, while still not 100% book accurate, I wouldn't mind seeing)

Your reviews of RoP is a precious thing, on its own merit. So if you bother to watch the show, I'll be glad to watch the reviews. And the Middle Eastern codswallop... Heck them, the creators live in their own reality, the best we can do is to mock them.

I might be mistaking things here but aren't the Barrow Wights a form of Wraith similar to the Nazgul, being that they're non corporeal. And something in me is saying that they were a 3rd Age thing but I'm not sure... So is RoP trying to say that the Barrow Wights were from soemthing like Haradrim?

A barrow wight is practically the spirit of the dead buried in the barrow and it would look like that, with all his panoply of war on since oftentimes people buried in mounds were freemen who bore weapons. Since we are in Middle Earth and not Middle East, Seb is right here - there's a possibility that those are spirits of some deceased Easterlings but still those are women robes and clothes... a weird choice made only by thinking about the "cool factor" (like Peter Steiner's Leitmotiv: "aber Vorsicht: it's cool, man"). To have a visual representation of what a barrow wight would look like, search on KZfaq for the scene from the movie "The Northmen" when the protagonist goes inside a burial mound to recover a sword.
