It was game over when Germany gave Riva that 1 point needed in order to not be caught and win, what a moment for Yugoslavia after 29 years and 24 appearances that they finally won ESC. Overall Lausanne 1989 was a brilliant ESC songwise, btw danke Germany for 12 pts! UK were close from victory yet again like most occasions they finished 2nd. Poor Iceland.

@jovanovicmilan It is interesting to read the thoughts of someone from a different part of Europe, and to hear perspectives that are different to mine, especially as there are differences between our parts of Europe (on certain levels) - whether manufactured or psychological. You are probably aware that many in western Europe believe that so many Eastern European countries just vote for other Eastern countries. Contd.

@jovanovicmilan I dont fully understand your point. The UK gave Yu 8 pts in 88 & 12 pts in 89, so they hardly resented Yu in 89 for not voting for them in 88. If as you suggest the west thinks the televote is neighbour political and the east thinks the jury vote is neighbour political then the whole thing has become very cynical, and if so the future of ESC is not good, because the songs (a song contest) become secondary or to a large extent irrelevant.
@ESCsince1968

@jovanovicmilan I am not sure that it was politics and ideology that caused Yugoslavia not to win ESC for so long. I think it was more that it was a country far away (it was for many years the only eastern country) with a language difficult to understand and an unfamiliar culture. I dont think the people who were jurors for ESC thought too much about politics when voting. I try to explain to people here that 'you' vote for neighbouring countries due to cultural familiarity

Of course Eurovision has always been political. Yugoslavia has never won the competition before, only in 1989. This was the year of the fall of the Iron Curtain. Yugoslavia won the Eurovision Song Contest and the Polish woman became Miss World. And this year the competition was won by Ukraine. Coincidences ...

This final quarter of the voting is very frustrating to watch. Votes are getting thinner on the ground for Yugoslavia. The thing is, they're also getting thin on the ground for the UK, keeping them from catching up with Yugoslavia (and only just), as the votes are spread around to quite strange amounts. All this makes Yugoslavia's eventual win feel quite accidental.

@setheurovision94 The spread of votes was IMO indicative of the relative lack of outstanding songs. Look how spread out the votes are, the fact of the winner receiving one of the lowest ever total scores, one of the lowest % counts ever. Many at the time were somewhat surprised at the victory.

You give your individual opinion , I try to explain voting system what most of Serbs can see.. Strangely when looking for something else I happened across this again. On further observation certain thing are noticeable. At the halfway point only 3 songs (who were the eventual T3) had scored more than 50 votes, 19 songs under 50 (unusual). But the T3 only scored heavily in the first half (esp Denmark) and ran out of votes and high votes at the end, whereas Sweden, Austria & Spain (the next 3) all had a late surges, though Spain got its highest votes at the end votes for it were patchy

@markietheboss1 there was no televoting then in 1989, there were juries, and Yugoslavia did not get points from all countries: Italy, Spain and Greece did not give any points to Yugoslavia.
@JorgeJRO
@JorgeJRO 5 жыл бұрын
Italy, Spain and Greece were always trying to beat Yugoslavia at european basket events -they have always been were a very strong power in that sport, traditionally-. Those three countries were then serious candidates to try to beat Yugoslavia, but only a few times got a victory over them. Not only in basket, but in many team sports the yugoslavs were very powerful and, specially, Spain was usually defeated by the Balcanians in handball, waterpolo, basket and even in football at that time. The juries of all those three countries could have been misconsidered the yugoslavian song here. Maybe I am phantasizing, but I usually wonder these kind of things when I observe such data on the voting. Another noticeable remark is the fact that Greece and Italy were then among the neighbour countries of Old Yugoslavia.... what about their neighbourhood relationship?
@irondasgr
@irondasgr 3 жыл бұрын
@@JorgeJRO I think that more or less you are fantasizing as far as the greek case is concerned. The fact with Greece is definitely not sports. On the contrary, our rivalry with the Yougoslavs in baskeball and the rest of the team sports was the one factor that was trying to connect us rather than divide us. It helped both countries reinforce a certain level of mutual respect even though in the venues (or swimming pool - we are eternal rivals with the Yougoslavs in water polo) things tended to be really fierce. What maybe went wrong with the Yougoslavs is that we can recognize certain differences in our cultures which are practically perfect strangers to each other. Those differences these certain decades (70s, 80s, early 90s) were enough to put a somewhat cold barrier between the 2 countries even though we were neighbours. This was obvious in many processes as were the entrance and exit from this country, the scarce organized tours (in straight opposition to tours to Italy, Spain, UK or France) or even the news coming from them which used to be random and rare. The fact that Yugo was a communist country as well may have played a small part in them being distant to us, the Greeks have always been looking to the west and we identify ourselves as strongly near with the French people. Greece is attached to France like Lichtenstein is to Switzerland. On the other hand Yugo back then included in its borders a significant part of muslims that are totally unconventional with the greek way of thinking and it was also a time when the issue of the stolen name of Macedonia was starting to boil. There was always around this bad fame that if you enter Yugoslavia expect to be robbed the very first 5 mins. We were right next to each other yet we felt them being light years away.

I can agree That Rock me is average song. But we got 12 from UK. Ireland, Israel, of course Turkey 12. Today it`s impossible three countries give 12 to one of EX Yu or EX Yu give 12 to UK or Ireland. @jovanovicmilan If you looked closely at my YT comments you would I see that I like the Yugoslav songs of: '62,'63,'66,'68,'72, (even '69 & 70). Dan Ljubezni '75 was my 2nd fav song that year & one of my all time favs. Zeljo Moja was my fav song in '86. So no, I wasnt surprised at a communist country winning I just think there had been many better Yugoslav songs that would have more deserved to win. Try not to be so presumptious, please.

@ESCsince1968 You have many opinions from UK 1988 it`s weird Yu gave 6 points to Celine Dione and 0 point to UK GO. Btw I find GO is one of the worst UK songs and 1989 Yu had 137 and UK 130 points. Many people in ex YU think UK can`t forgive these two years. Slovenia 2003 gave 10 to Turkey, 12 to Russian TATOO, and only 3 points to Belgium, and you hav many comments from western: Why Slovenia? What do you think political or cultural voting? Maidir is on tSerbia.

But you don`t represent the ESC system of voting. 1968 Dubrovacki trubadari had Jedan dan, One day, and they couldn`t win beceause we were communist Tito`s Yugoslavia, but Spain won because Franco was dying. It` s not presumption it`s a fact. 1989 Yugoslavia won because of fall of comunism in Eastern Europe, It`s only fact which says there were and are so many political voting on ESC:-))

Spain's victory by one only point over U.K. in the 1968 contest has made to speak a lot among eurofans, specially in Spain and U.K., logically. We all know the rumors who state that Franco bribed some european juries in order to achieve the victory for our country. All those rumours began from somebody stating something not-everything-right on a Spanish private channel of TV. You can read the true story on Wikipedia. Anyway, yes, Franco was dying and our old regime was reaching at its end, and Spain was trying to be "not so different" by the image projected internationally, but I think the main and almost only very actual reason of Massiel's triomph was the great performance she did of the great song she had to defend. Everything was matter from such a show, nothing coming from external influences at all.
