Finland's song doesn't just appeal to the 'rocky' crowd. It actually gives pop and camp song lovers a run for their money. It has the ability to unite MULTIPLE markets.

There are so many good songs this year it's getting hard to choose which ones I prefer. My current number 1 is Serbia, closely followed by Latvia, Germany and Czechia. Normally Serbia would have been number two after Poland, but TVP had to mess that up 👀

I am tired of countries playing safe and not taking the risks, because of that Serbia is my number 1! That being said if we will judge the voice, music and presentation, in my opinion, La Zarra and France is a masterpiece!

I know its not realistic but part of me wishes the app or other voting polls like this also had an option for like you can't vote for your own country because I'd be so interested to see how that would effect everything. As someone with my own country in my top 3. Latvia is so interesting cause I keep thinking I'll rank it lower when a new song comes in but then I listen again and its basically the music I love outside Eurovision and I can't bring myself to rank it lower.

Interesting insight into the scoreboard. I've used it for 6 years now and never really thought or seen anyone go into so much detail. Completely agree with your comments about automatically placing a new song high up in the rankings, as I tend to do that a lot (apart from Israel, which I think I placed at 18th on first listen...it's now 24th in my ranking)...

The more the season goes on the more I think Slovenia could do very, very well. The fact they are in 7th place right now with a male indie rock act, two things the fandom automatically dislikes, is very impressive.

This could just be my taste talking but I think when you have three generally popular songs (Austria, Israel, UK) all come into the top 10 it's only natural that other high-ranked songs i.e Slovenia drop a lot even if they're not associated by genre. In general the majority of Eurofans have some sort of combination of the consensus top 10~15 as theirs, if someone's ranking is slightly contrarian (for lack of a better term) it's likely that the new wave of perceived popular songs are gonna affect their ranking less, if that makes sense.

thank you for yet another great analysis Tom! i think you're 100% correct that Loreen and Käärijä have completely different audiences, and Käärijä's fans seem very dedicated. will be very interesting to see how things shake up after saturday. in general i think the more alternative acts have very passionate fanbases - my top 3 is Käärijä, Luke Black and Sudden Lights and i really can't see that changing anymore. i'm so happy i get to vote in semifinal 1. i also think Armenia and Georgia entering with young female acts will reinforce the girly bop block, very interesting to see how that will affect the scoreboard especially after Loreen has had time to adjust.

What app are people using for this data? I'd be interested in putting in my own ranking to see how I would compare to others, or to see if my tastes would be similar to most others. Given my Top 5 are Finland, Czechia, Norway, Germany, and potentially Sweden depending who they send, I'm curious to compare and add my votes.

UK now LESS THAN 100 points behind Israel on the fan voting. Israel numbers don’t seem to be climbing yet UK is keeping the distance between themselves (9th currently) and Serbia (10th) whilst closing in on Israel. I had a feeling this would happen, UK will keep growing with time as it takes a few listens to appreciate 💙

As a data guy myself, I really love this kind of videos!! As a Eurovision fan, my top songs of this year so far are Norway and France. Dark horses for me are Malta and Belgium. I know those songs are not popular but I quite like them. Not at all a fan of Croatia, Finland is growing on me but still not one of my favorites. And as for my own country, the Netherlands: well, I'm afraid it will drown between al the uptempo songs and might not even qualify...

So if I understand correctly: sometimes a new entry can take away points from other similar songs (="Points Suck"). This is what we intuitively think would happen. Other times a new entry can actually increase the points available for a certain genre so much that it lifts all boats, so to say. (=Points Funnel?) Either by attracting a certain demographic, or by awakening the metal head inside us all. Normally I'd assume it's a good thing in Eurovision to be alone in any given genre. But for very strong entries it might actually be good to have some mid-tier competition. One reason being that we tend to 'spread out' songs that are similar to each other, or at least I do. So if there are 4 rock songs in a field, the best one could be pushed higher, just to make space for the others. I dunno if that makes sense, but that's what often happens to my rankings.

My ranking gymnastics is about how to keep Piqued Jacks in my top 10. Goes to show how tough it is for less-than-favorites to get any points out of judging scores, especially in the final. For good measure, my unmovable number 1 is Alika. There is a sweet second spot waiting for Loreen.

I change my votes depends on where the countries that I like are. Even though a song is not in my top 10 but I still love it and I see it highly underrated, instead of giving points to Finland, Norway or Czechia that they are already on top and no need of more points, I give to them

Interesting video! As you said Loreen hasn’t won yet. Last year Klara Hammarström topped Spotify a week before the final and she only ended as number six. Thanks for your interesting analysis! I actually think that Loreen might struggle to 'keep' her position as a top favorite till the ESC final. Simply too many female songs who must divide the points. And however she has a phenomenal voice and is well known as an artist, i still think the song is not that strong... Imo there are five main categories: (1) girl bop - (2) ballad (m/f/duo) - (3) rock/alt - (4) edm/dance based - (5) 'gimmick/message/memorable/'the steady hook'' - (6) etnic / cultural. All songs have their home base in one category but could have overlaps in more categories. Each category has their own voters. Songs that really stand out in own category or songs that could snuggle up some points from more 'categories' could do surprisingly well! Following that line I think these entries have a chance to really stand-out: -Austria: strong bop (cat.1) and meanwhile a very memorable gimmick/message (cat.5) slightly dance vibe -Serbia: stands out as the only solid edm (cat.4) entry, will also appeal to some people who will vote for message/memorable (cat.5) or support lgbt -Finland: not to pinpoint, a strong combination of cat. 3/4/5: very broad appeal. -Spain: stands out for a very memorable etnic vibe (cat.6). Will also appeal people who tend to vote for ballad like slower (cat.2) songs. -Some surprise ballad with a phenomenal staging??? Im not sure yet which could stand out... 😆 I think it will be between Finland, Austria, Serbia and Spain when it comes to being a stand-out. (And perhaps that ballad song that I did not found yet...) And yes there is Sweden... but it will be not be the landslide victory I guess (or hope.. 😉)
