Go video. Getting a Tesla soon and it’s good to see the charging options for long trips. I’ve watched your videos (which I enjoy the long trips) and knowing my potential options is really helpful. Thanks

The Tesla preheats your battery if you make the charger your next destination. Also, once you start charging, put in the next charger as your destination, and it will continuously calculate how much charge you will arrive with, so when you hit your comfort level, unplug and go. Also, if you have the optiin of charging at home, having an electrician run a NEMA 14-50 plug, or run one yourself, and you can buy the tail for the charger that comes with the car. I can charge 29 mph or 7kw with mine. I also have a 40 amp Clipper Creek EVSE(Amazon) which I can charge at 9.6kw with, using the J1772 adapter that also comes with the car that will do maybe 38mph, and if you want to go crazy, a hard wired Tesla destination charger on a 60 amp circuit can charge 11kw or 44 mph on a LR model 3. They even have a 17kw charger that goes on a 100 amp circuit, and draws 80, for the big Teslas.

Great explanation of charging options, outside of Tesla I really didn't know about others and how they could be used. It's sad that there is so much compatibility problems with different types of connectors. Those chademo plugs are huge and adapter for Tesla unreasonably expensive. Thanks Kyle, be safe and have a good one! Casey

Very helpful! I'm looking to buy my first EV. I'm considering a Ford and would love a review of the FordPass app. By the way, does the app show the prices at each charge station like gas stations advertise now?
@edwnorris
@edwnorris 2 жыл бұрын
No, you've got to go to the apps to find that. Most show it on the screen as you charge. But given the different plans available, there's no one-size-fits-all they can print on the unit. You should know about this recent piece, if you haven't found it already. Sounds like Ford (and a lot of other legacy makers) have work to do integrating live info into their navigation. Better to use the apps for that too, since they will even tell you if a unit is occupied, not just if it's in working order. A Better Route Planner is another good asset. Their app and website road trip planner streamline a lot of the number crunching and live info into something pretty close to what Tesla has built into their cars. Inside EVs just re-posted a video of a Marques Brownlee 1,000 mile, 2 day race between a Mach-e, an Audi gas SUV, and a Tesla Model S in upstate New York, and the Ford really suffered for using its navigation to a charging station that was out of order. KZfaq won't let me post the link. Should be pretty easy to find.

It’s already available in South Korea, although it already sold out. Availability is still pending for North America, and will also require a software update to add support. (People with an equivalent passive adapter sold by EVHub have found that an update is needed.)

I think the biggest issue with EV chargers is the fact that you can’t just tap a debit/credit card and charge without an account. Hopefully this can be solved.
@chaplui6882

I think that's what EA (Electrify America) does - tap/scan your credit card and charge.
@StephenBieda

NOTE: the EA app does not support Canadian credit cards. You can't setup a profile on the app with a Canadian card because there is no field for provinces or postal coades. So you have to tap/ swipe your credit to activate a charge session if you are a Canadian.

Are you able to charge at home? If so, then having a charge station close to your house will not be needed. Of course, if you are in a multifamily dwelling that has no charging available, you would be using the charger near your place.

Tesla CCS adapters in both directions are in the world. Tesla is already making an adapter for CCS charging stations (available in South Korea, pending availability in North America), and an adapter for CCS-equipped vehicles to use superchargers is in development.

The Tesla preheats the battery for you so you can charge fast if you make your next destination a supercharger. It also calculates how much charge you will arrive with, so once you start charging, put in the next supercharger and when it comes up to 10 percent or whatever margin you are comfortable with, unplug and go.

In the past, people wondered why cars don't sell. Since you could barter for hay for your horse and ride away. So thx for for proving, there will always be trolling troglodytes in every generation, who do not have a life. That will never be evolved enough to comprehends why change happens or is needed.

First of all I’m still a virgin to charging. I’ve used my home charger only. The first app I used Plug Share, my credit card got hacked when entering my credit card information. Immediately, after I entered my credit card I got a fraud alert text from Visa asking if I did a $1.99 charge at a gaming site. I said no and they blocked my card. That said I’m all ready gun shy. Okay so you have three or four major players. All of them have a different process to get fucking electrons out of the pump. All I want to do is swipe my credit card and plug in , wait and go. For god sakes how simple would that be. Who the hell can read your phone in bright sunlight. It’s hard enough to see it let alone find the right app for the right charger and swipe the fricking phone on some pad that may or may not work. My card always works at a gas pump. Just use your credit card. Do you have to carry a card for every different station. How stupid is that. The fact you have to watch a KZfaq video for an hour to learn how to do something simple as moving electrons is already telling me these companies are fucked up and not organized. I get that you have different power levels. You have different grades of gas. Who gives a shit. Design the fucking system so the vehicle tells what the vehicle needs and the fucking electrons flow at the correct rate. What in the hell is wrong with this EV process. When I drive my car and it gets to a quarter tank I look for a gas station. I don’t route my trip by charging stations. For god sakes what is wrong with this whole role out process. It’s like we are uncivilized and just discovering the wheel.
