A few days before my install my wife said "you know we might also want to charge in the laneway as well as the garage". I cost a few hundred to do that but it avoids future problems your CyberTruck not fitting in your garage!

Great vids 👍🏻 I’m installing underground ducting to take a supply from my meter box under a pathway and eventually on to an EV charger. Just wondering how best to deal with terminating the ducting at ground level at either end to avoid water/debris entering it? Does it have to terminate into an inspection pit or can it be sealed up with foam/sealant? Thanks in advance 👍🏻

Biggest concern I would have with that installation is it’s risk to damage and interference. A security cabinet 🗄 would be a good idea.. do they/you do one? Also a charger with built in WiFi extender and or CAT6 cable in the installation would be a good idea if shielding/interference isn’t a problem.

Hi, Excellent video and commentary. My main concern with any EV charging point installation in a public accessible area is the danger of vandalism to the equipment. I always feel that in that situation that a secondary enclosure might be beneficial. Keep up the good work and stay safe.

Thanks Gareth - We did discuss placing the charger on the other side of the gate for this reason. However the parking area is a quiet street and not in a high crime area.

Not alone will they be a target for thieves, they will also be a target for people taking personal Injury claims against the owners of such chargers, as the charging leads in a lot of cases cross areas where adults or children could walk and as such could represent a trip hazard, also the charging leads usually tend to be black in colour instead of a bright yellow for safety and also aprppriate signage would need to be considered reminding people to beware of charging cables.

Big issue is huge number of houses in uk that have old incoming Mains which is old paper wax type insulation ( not exactly sure exact make up) . My mains fuse is 60amp . I doubt. The cable will take a higher load especially if actual used. Means every mains cable will need replacing, then is the road electric cable capable of supporting extra load and finally can we generate the extra electricity for electric cars , heat pumps and other such as water heating when gas disappears.

Thanks; a pretty comprehensive introduction for the novice. Although it was touched on, I think the reality is that most people should be charging overnight (when there's virtually no other load on the CU) and also that virtually no one charges from 0 to 100 SoC in one session. So, there are really no issues with other household appliances, or the time it might take to fully charge the EV. Having said that, a Fast Charging EVSE - the 7kW option - is a no-brainer. Mine, the Andersen A2, combined with my Octopus Go off-peak tariff means that I can deliver ~28kW overnight, and this gives me a daily top-up range of >100 miles for my BME i3 (compared to the average UK commute of ~20 miles). One last nit; the Tesla doesn't necessarily need Wi-Fi for its FOTA (firmware updates over-the-air), it has a separate cellular connection that supports this, and Wi-Fi is just a nice-to-have. The point regarding at least thinking about future support for dual EV connectivity/charging is a good one; 2030 is really not that far aware and people with soon have two BEVs and will be thinking about charging both...

Be nice if the charger had a lock to keep the cable sure. And also a WiFi repeater - presumably it has an rj45 to it anyway for the smart features.

Excellent video.👍 Just a couple of things - in that situation with the car parking in a public space, placing the charging unit on the other side of the fence may have offered more security for a tad bit of inconvenience. Just to pick up on one statement by Gaz who stated that to ‘replace a damaged charging cable was a job for an electrician’ - is that strictly correct? I totally get that installing a new circuit and the EV charger itself is very much an electricians job - but what regulation proscribes the user (DIY/non ticketed spark) from changing the charging cable?

Thanks Norman - Technically replacing the cable isn’t difficult apart from the tools. The Zappi cover has a specific torque setting on the screws to maintain the IP rating. So the usual caveats with regards to warranty etc would apply.

Just had a BP Pulse Charger installed at home under the UK Motorbility scheme (Free) Installer was very professional checking the voltage before it was installed Her knocked on the door and advised us that the voltage was outside of the recommended range ie 230-250 Contacted Weston Power who supply the Electricity (NO the people who charge us!) So they have said their supply range is 220 -253!! and 253 will trip the safely device on the unit WOW what a cock up Th charger works fine during the day but trips at night - just when the Octopus cheap tarrif at 5p a KWT comes in So Weston Power hopefully will sort the supply down to 250 volts OR BP Pulse will fit a different unit next week Will advise later - But check yur power supply before choosing your charger

Hi. Great video. I am about to get my first EV. I have three phase electricity coming into my house via 3 x 60A main fuses (it’s an Edwardian house and I think there used to be some big machinery in the garage). Would it be worth considering having one of the rapid charging points installed, or are they prohibitively expensive and/or really no benefit for home charging? Thanks.

If you’ve got three phase - go for it! You can do more charging in off peak lower cost hours.

Worth considering whether the car has 7,11, or 22kW inverter for AC charging. I may have got the last 2 wrong (as my car is only 7), but I believe both are 3 phase the later being 32A 3ph? Mind you its only top end cars (maybe that Tesla) that would have 3ph inverters.

Great video, although ALL EV owners need to be aware withing 2 to 5 years the government WILL introduce some sort of tax to account for loss of fuel duty. So an EV will be closer to the cost of filling up with petrol. But we have a few years to enjoy cheap charging.

I bought a Rolec HomePod, because it was made inLincolnshire by a manufacturer of caravan outlets, and the equipment inside is on a din rail. I was really disappointed. Got water in the plug after just a few months, took 6 months to get issue resolved. Threatened installer with small claims court and a negative review before I got it resolved. Mean while I was paying for electric at peak rate to se a granny charger. I really wish I had bought a Zappi. I went to Fully Charged Show specifically to look at EVs and chargers and a lot of the staff their couldn’t answer any technical questions about the chargers.

I'm in Australia, and have a crazy 45 amp mains fuse, but I have 6 kw of solar and 2 powerwall 2, so I don't use grid. My fuse box is well and truly over capacity for grid only, but my house internal electrics cover this with ease. I have a first gen zappi and and I've had the powerwalls for 4.5 year's , solar for nearly 6 year's. I not entirely happy with the zappi as it charges fine but the zappi goes weird at times and it's set at 28 amp instead of 32

We have 2 EV’s. For 7 years, we have used “granny chargers” that came with the cars. No special wiring needed. Having a huge battery means that on days we don’t drive, it has surplus capacity. Picture a fuel tank that holds 100 gallons. Do I stop to fill up at 1/2 tank? No. Just drive. Now, if I have infinite fuel at home, but a small hose that I can trickle all night into that tank; that’s how I charge.

So at my house I have an existing wired double 3 pin external socket which i use for plugging in hover/power washer/christmas lights can that point be used/converted to feed the 7KW Charger unit? this is the closest point to where I park my car or does the EV charger unit need to be wired directly from the meter box. My drive is all tarmacked and don't want to run a new cable to where I normally park the car. If directly wired from Meter box I will have to just mount the new EV charge next to it and park car at the side of the house. Any info much appreciated.

If the 3 pin socket has its own dedicated circuit and the cable has been sized to cope with 32A (7kW) then it could be converted - but this is unlikely to be the case. A second option you outlined is what lots of installers go for.

wcan you hav more than on ev charging scoket if you have a family wiyh many vehicles? will i need a mylti scoket extention lead? how future proof ar thes when it comes to international standards? i.e. will on vehicle be able to be used on another? or will i need a workshop full of different camles like i have fo all my past eletronic devices?

Connectors are standardised (outside US & Canada) Chargers are standardised ( apart from Tesla)

Ebikes, electric scooters and electric motorbikes mostly have 3 pin UK plugs. It is impossible to find outdoor charging points even though almost all evs can slow charge with this type of socket.

I notice you used an rcbo in the consumer unit. As the Zappi also has a built in rcbo how are you managing selectivity between the rcbo’s, would a mcb in the consumer unit have been a better option?

At 2 .0 you show the cut out and meter on the outside wall.You state that the supply is rated at 100 amp.This may be so but usually if 25 mm tails go from the outside wall through cavity installation then the the dno will down size the cut out fuse to 80 or even 60 amps .This is because the 25 mm tails are rated at 103 amps ref mef c but considerably lower if going through the wall insulation .Just thought you may wish to point that out .Great vid btw

The DNO doesn’t take responsibility for the tails. The size the fuse to protect there network. The electrician is responsible for sizing the tails to match the load and circuit conditions.

Not a good idea -charging will be limited to 10Amps which is very slow.

Disabled/Older people may not be able to handle the charging cable due to arthritis or being in a wheelchair. They may require second point for a live in carer or overnight carer.

Good video. Load sharing with other appliances isn’t an issue for most people as they charge overnight so showers, ovens etc aren’t really relevant. Also with regards to having two EVs, if you balance the load then you’ll be charging each at 50% of the output of the charger so it probably makes more sense for the majority of people to charge one car one night and the other the next night. The net result is pretty much the same?

Load sharing isn't an issue until you've blown the supply cut out lots of people don't understand the use of electricity in the home!

No other option at this property. The charger has pin protection to stop others during the power.

Since you asked for the comments, I’d want a car charger that charges my car wirelessly hence a charger build into the driveway so when the car is parked in the bay it does not need plugging into it just charges the car automatically during scheduled times or whenever the solar power provides its juice.

Just got an ID.3, I have a BP Pulse Home Charger, it's currently charging at 21mph, does that right? I've read it can do up to about 30mph... Is this because of the cold weather?

Does seem a bit low. Charging rates will slow down if the battery is nearly full > 80% or if your charger runs at a lower power < 7kW due to some load curtailment - eg power supply to the property being fused at 60 Amps.

@@efixx hmm, highest I saw was 22mph, I was charging from ~30% to 80%. I had my power company install a 100A Isolation Switch before the home charger was installed.

@@brianwood5220 I noticed that my external garden socket was open recently. I know for a fact that I always keep it closed, and unpowered, when not in use. Somebody chancing their arm! I've also had my external tap messed with. I always have the water switched off when not in use. In hindsight I should have installed devices that could be padlocked shut. I'll remember that when they are replaced.

Not done a EV charge yet nor do I know anythings about electric cars Question If its at the back of your property like how this one is, what not stopping someone to come and plug there car in and charging there car via your supply ? Is there a way you can turn off the supply via the charger so its a dead unit till you switch it back on

What puts me off is when you are away on holiday in Devon & Cornwall. It takes 4-5 hours to replenish 80 percent. That is half a day of a holiday. The charge rate speed has got to improve & the cost of the cars new has to come down. £30,000 plus is out of many family budgets even on PCP finance. Added to which all the cost of the home charging unit changing the consumer unit it is all starting to add up.

One important consideration not mentioned is the fact that your tails from your cabinet to your main DB would have to be a suitable size if you increase the size of the fuse to 100 amps .

Anyone else thinking what's stopping your neighbour from rocking up to your charge point when your out and charging their car and you having to pay for it? Seems like having it on the other side of the fence and then just reaching the cable over the fence when needed might have been a better option.

Wouldn’t it be a good idea to install the charger in a lockable cabinet for security if it has to be in a public area to protect against theft, vandalism and the weather? I know chargers are weatherproof but handling wet, dirty cables is never pleasant.

It looks like your charging cable will run across a public path, if so, what are the legal implications and liability if someone trips and is injured. I dought any house insurance would cover if it was found to be an illegal act on your part. I think this is going to be a big problem for owners who cannot get car onto their own property to charge. Look forward to your views on this aspect.

Easiest thing to do is have your electrician install a plug next to your car. Bump up the voltage and amps if you can. Don't install some device. Why? You just need a plug. A tethered cable is a recipe for disaster. It will be stolen inevitably. The device will break. Just install a plug, and drag out your untethered cable. That is still easier than going to a gas station. If your untethered cable breaks, you can order a new one online without hiring an electrician. Most homes have the ability to install plugs that will supply double the volts, that will half the charging time over a "granny cable" which is usually sufficient for overnight charging.

Doesn’t really work like that David. The charge point communicates with the car to let it know what power is available from the plug. The granny cable can’t tell fibs!

Yes provided you store the cable correctly so it doesn’t get wet . Most chargers have a facility to store the cable or an end cap to cover the connector.

These are great my only point being the shortage of public and UK housing stock unsuitability for currently housing an ev charger and we are talking surrey not the Highlands. Sorry as of August 2021 the ev dream is and still will be a impractical nightmare for many many years to come, and bojo wanting this switch over by 2030 etc 2100 maybe I'm afraid

@@efixx I agree not many at present but manufacturers are manufacturing Kia Hyundai Ford and Bm ,Hydrogen is cheap plentiful and the infrastructure and ease of use will ease its way Plus you can plug in your fuel cell and power your house as a bi product lol

Totally agree electric cars are not the future, far too much needs to be done from infrastructure to generation of power and upgrades to local power stations not forgetting most people cant park outside their house and can't see cables across pavements and imagine a 4 car householder using 4 7kw chargers even allowing for diversity its a stupid amount of power req at each house for 8hrs. Stupid idea ,hydrogen pushing forward even jcb have built machines its clearly betamax vs vhs all over again. We are trying to reduce consumption not quadruple it ffs

@@waterpowerspaniels To be green the hydrogen has to be generated from green electricity and that is not cheap. In fact very little of it is being generated that way at the moment. It will require a very big investment in something like solar farms in desert areas.

I’ve been an EV driver for more than 3 years, so we are pro EV. However we believe you still need to plan carefully when planning an EV journey to certain locations.

@@efixx Fair enough, since not all brands have their own robust DCFC network, along with destination charging. But the bulk of EVs sold today do, plus have the capability to plug in at virtually any mobile home park, and even right down to domestic electric receptacles. All of these where gasoline typically isn't sold. Thank you, and by the way, a great video! 👍
