Today I was faced with the challenge of installing an EV charging point in a garage where I could NOT get a CAT5 cable back to the main tails to install a CT clamp for the load management, see how I use a wireless device to get me out of trouble!
Hope you enjoy!!

Keep a couple of small pieces of scrap timber in the van and some quick-clamps. Clamp a piece inside and a piece outside and drill through them all, no risk of the knockouts getting punched through, then you can stick the SWAs exactly where you like 👍👍❤️ Knockouts are great, but when they’re not in the right place they can be a right pain.

the wireless product is nice but 99 times of 100 not needed. Almost always wiring EV charger back to main consumer unit, trivial to run some ethernet or just use EV ultra cable.

Smart charging regulations say you're not allowed to use wireless devices for main CT Monitoring. Also your CT Clamp is in the wrong place, it's supposed to go between cutout and meter

Thanks for another entertaining and informative video. My garage and location for planned EV charger is detached, I’ve been considering all sorts of methods for providing power to it, thinking that the present supply might not be suitable. But now I know that the 10mm probably is 😊 -Thank you. It’s a pity that you’re down south 😮

I thought you couldn't use a wireless CT for the grid like it says in the zappi installer info sheet that it comes with
@sotaelectrical
@sotaelectrical 6 ай бұрын
If you look at the full installation manual, page 26 it says you can use it but must limit the grid to max 65A and it states on page 45 that it can be used in the event that it is impractical to install a hardwired CT

Another very informative video and great content. About to get a single-phase board upgrade to 3-phase (WPD/NG installed supply free 😁) and deciding between Zappi, Andersen v2 or Simpson and Partners. Any strong preference?
@sotaelectrical
@sotaelectrical 6 ай бұрын
Thank you! Ok so if you have solar or battery and you want max control over it, out of those chargers go for the Zappi, my next choice would be Simpson & Partners - works with solar, not as much control but far better looking and my last choice would be the Andersen because it’s massive and a pain to install, it also only has a 20mm cable entry which is more than painful when trying to install an EV ultra cable.

Thanks, another cracking video. A quick question if I might be so cheeky. Once you have installed an EVSE (EV charger if you prefer), are you obligated to send an ENA to the DNO? Why I ask: I had a Zappi installed by my electricity supplier. Very tidy install and it has all worked fine in the 6 months I have had it. However, we now have solar/battery in the house and I get a 50amp G100 import restriction slapped on me each time I try to charge the EV and the house battery concurrently during the night time off-peak rate period. This works out at just under 60 amps at 230v (or actually 51 amps as our supply averages 245v), so with the mport restriction I have to charge the EVs or the house battery at any one time. Ironic that my 100 amp protected supply won't give me more than 50 amps while everyone else in my street is asleep (29 houses, only one other EV charger and the neighbouring streets are all military, so no house batteries or EVSE there either). Long story slightly shorter, my DNO tells me the EVSE installer didn't send them an ENA, so only now 6 months later are they able to process a request to do a load check on my supply.
@sotaelectrical
@sotaelectrical 6 ай бұрын
Thank you! Long story short, yes, every install I do I notify the DNO. as should everyone else 👍👍

Looks like a 6mm supply for that garage board + the other circuits which looks like a ring main & lighting, would adding an EV to this not potentially over load the MCB/RCBO at the DB it’s fed from?
@sotaelectrical
@sotaelectrical 6 ай бұрын
Hi Chris, as said in the video it’s a 10mm to this D/B, you can see this in the video also where one of the SWA’s is an old6mm Hot tub supply, and no it won’t overload because as shown in the video the zappi is limited at the garage D/B to prevent this from happening.

Can someone help me understand why a home couldn’t have two 7kw ev chargers charging at the full 7kw each? If each one is 32a and the house has a 100a main fuse, let’s imagine the oven & hob are gas and there’s no electric shower/s. Is this doable? Just thinking into the future, most homes have more than one car and presumably then multiple chargers would be needed?
@sotaelectrical
@sotaelectrical 5 ай бұрын
Hi James, this can be achieved, as long as load curtailment is installed and you have a 100A supply then it’s fine.

I'm back on a granny myself and finding it very hard to justify £1k+ for 7kw charger. My night rate is cheaper at 17p/kw going upto 28p/kw during the day. I charge about 30kw once per week, using a fast charger a night would save me approx £3.30 per charge (30kw x 11p) which equates to £172 per year. It would take me over 5 years to break even!
