I worked for an OEM and we did validation on about 15 different home LV2 chargers and the grizzle was the most rugged device unit and what I'd buy for my home charger.

Fuses are an additional over and above the UL required protection exactly to save the board in case of the external spike.

I have a Grizzl-e classic and it's built like a tank. I was surprised how simple it was the first time I opened the enclosure. Great product and made in Canada

I've been using this charger for two years or so for my Model Y. Very nice simple no frills charger that I've never had any issues with. I recommend it to everyone who asks.

I like the replaceable fuse feature on the Grizzle! Thanks for doing these. I know you all like to dissemble stuff for engineering analytic sake, but I enjoy these for repairability sakes as a possible customer :D.

I have the extreme edition (camo paint) without wifi and it's working well. I appreciate the simplicity in design. It's heavy but easy to install. Mine doesn't have all the smart features, but I wanted something dumb. Too many folks have been burned by OTA updates bricking their charger.

The Tesla charger case neatly holds its cable. Given that these are little more than 'junction boxes', that's the major feature difference in my mind.

If you're going to do this stuff with any credibility, please get someone who actually knows what they're looking at,for a company that represents themselves as experts in the teardown field, it's just embarrassing.

One of the first things prospective purchasers look for is the charging cable length. Did you discuss that?

I see some comments online that the bays for the hard wire lugs are pretty specific size wise. There's at least one video of someone (foolishly IMO) modifying lugs with a grinder. I think Grizzl-e does give specifics but it would be nice if you covered hard wiring options. Otherwise great video, the product looks great.

I love my Grizzl-E. Basically got it for the weather sealing... I figure, if it is designed for Canada, it can handle anything. I don't need (or even want) wifi or app control or any of that sort of thing. I just want to plug it in. Beyond that, all of the EVSE's are pretty much the same thing, just big glorified contactors with a handful of safety features.

What I would be interested in on this one is a careful look the terminal strip. There was a run that had a lot of failures there, attributed to a short term problem with newly trained assembly workers, and improper torque. It would be interesting to know the details on who makes that, what current it's rated for, and how much margin there is between too loose and overheating vs. too tight and stripping out the threads in the thin copper piece.

Which method is being used to label the top casing?

Quite a few Grizzl-E units caught fire at the terminal block. Any comment on that? Likely to be an assembly issue, or is the terminal block under spec for the load?

Can you shorten the charger cable on these, seems pretty easy to do?

i used to build remote sensors and we used these boxes. they are excellent!

Does the Grizzl-E provides ground and arc faults protection using GFCI and AFCI breakers ? or only uses fuses for overloading protrection?

How long was the charging cable? What was AWG gauge of the cable? How many strands in cable? What was insulation rating? How robust is the cable to car connector? Etc?

I bought the classic less than a year ago to do 30A out of my house for now. If i move up to 50A, you just need to change the dip switches inside, they said.

Grizzl-E Smart is $449 and charges at 40 amps. Tesla Wall Connector is $425 and charges at 48 amps, has built-in cord storage, a longer warranty (4 years vs. 3), the Tesla connector version has a button to open the vehicle's charging port, and is arguably more stylish. Why would I buy Grizzl-E over Tesla for either a Tesla or J1772 application?

I appreciate these tear downs. I'm going to be "that guy" for a moment and suggest you avoid the word "simplistic" since it usually has a negative connotation that you clearly didn't mean here. Not a biggy, just paws for thought. Keep up the great stuff!

I suspect that the WiFi range is compromised by mounting the antenna inside the (very rugged) faraday cage.

Looks like a standard ESP32 module with a USB-UART IC for programming. Some opportunities for further integration are left aside. The Wifi module could have been integrated onto the main PCB. Or is anyone going to retrofit this? Does not look like there is a lot of protection circuit going on. Spring contacts could have been used instead of the screw terminals. Less chances for failure because they can't be under/over torqued. The side labels could have been replaced with laser marking the case. Also no info about what color states which status? If Tesla could get away without the EMC measures (ferrite cores) they would have probably.

You need to talk a bit more about the software. The grizzl-e is nice because it will connect to any OCPP 1.6J provider, so you can easily control your own charger. Most other chargers don't give you this option.

They really need to offer a case that gracefully holds the cable like the Flo does... people will pay up...

I bought one and i have issues with the current limiter not working properly. It keeps blowing my 30 amp fuses once in a while. i wonder if you tested the current limiter circuit as mine is set for 24 amps and blows my 30 amp fuse . The wiring was verified by a certified electrician. So the wiring is ok. I am suspecting the charger the company is slow to provide answers.

You guys should learn how an EVSE works. It would have been nice to see some detail of their control circuit. Lower coil appears to be ground fault sense and upper to be current. Neither is "voltage." Would be nice to see what chips they are using. Is it one relay for each leg? Fuses are certainly on the relay coil circuits. That means the board is likely repairable if a relay coil goes short.

Weight is a factor for shipping, but in a static installation is it much of a factor? I realise it's part of the specs and is a valid data point, but I don't think my wall would complain by saying "You're too heavy! Get me a Tesla instead!" Given it's built with much less bespoke design required, is so simple to build, and is safe, I'd say the weight is a fair trade-off.

It's not clear if this thing has the 6mA DC leakage detection built-in or not. Maybe US regulations don't mention it, but this is needed in the UK to avoid having to fit a dedicated earth rod.

Hey Ho! This review echoes Mr. Tom Mologney , State of Charge, review. This is a first rate charger which will survive if you have kids in the house. I have two of this brand, and I have had no problems nor concerns with it. They COMPLETLY left out the fact that you can have this charger device with a plug in OR a hard wired installation method. To the curious reader in search of an excellent charger; this is the one to buy! {For all the linguistic Karens-- 'charger' is the vernacular term for what is, in plain terms, an extension cord with a computer attached to it, to feed electricity to your EV. The true 'charger' lies inside the EV}>

The terminals for hooking up the wires for the NEMA plug (and the “charger” wand) with the crimp on spades makes it pretty much impossible to convert to hardwire configuration because the width of the terminals is too narrow to get off the shelf connectors to put on your #6 L1/L2 and #10 ground wires. I found someone on KZfaq trying to do hardwire explaining this and I steered clear of Grizzl-E because of this as much as I’m Canadian and wanted to support them

Do you guys check if the relays utilize zero crossing technology or not? Seem to be really small and cheap pcb-mounted relays. Similar cheap relays as tesla, though

ISSUES I see... WIFI Card completely encased in a fully shield/metal box will reduce reception of signal (think faraday cage for those RF Peeps) . I don't see external antenna or any way for RF to pass thru the metal box. Also no Blast-proof ceramic fuses are used..

I bought the wifi model and the wifi functionality never actually worked. It does charge good though. Just don't buy the wifi one

Just installed another Tesla wall connector, hard to beat for price, ease of installation, cable management and styling…..not sure why a Tesla owner would jump ship for an aftermarket charger at Tesla’s competitive price.

Really nice design but I doubt that the Wi-Fi will work (prove me wrong of course). Placing a radio inside of a mostly sealed enclosure is a REALLY bad idea. Most devices enclosed in metal boxes require an external antenna. Theoretically, it might be possible to have the holes on the bottom tuned to allow Wi-Fi to go through but I doubt if they did so. They've basically places a Wi-Fi device in a Faradey Cage (which is a device specifically targeted at blocking RF signals). I live the model but NOBODY should buy the Wi-Fi model. Again... I'd love to be wrong on this but I am VERY skeptical.

This unit was on my short list for my home charger. I ended up choosing the Emporia

This is drivel. I expect Monroe to comment about engineering for manufacturing, durability, and performance. Talking about how much a circuit board weighs and how easy it is to take a unit apart is completely irrelevant. Also, if you know why there are physical fuses in lieu of electronic circuit breakers, say so, but you don't know, you're just speculating. I get enough of that from talking heads on TV

Lesson learned: Do not hire Munro in regards to electronics and EVSE design. This is an embarrassment for an engineering/consulting company!

Underwhelming, poor design and execution (see the crooked label and ludicrous light pipe). Made to be cheap (i.e. leaves out the $3.47 O-ring to make it splash proof), but fails, as it costs the same as the superior competition. Blatant Mistakes: 1:20 "subtle differences" consist of two: paint color and Wireless card not plugged in. Not exactly "subtle"!; 3:05 Those ferrites are not voltage sensors, but EMI filters and likely a Current sensor; 3:30 "Lead Free" symbol is actually on the antenna portion of the wireless PCB, not the main PCB, so the "Avalanche" version would not have it; 3:48 "injection-molded stanchions" are extruded nylon spacer tubing, cut to length; 5:00 the DIP Switch simply lets the processor know a Wi-Fi card has been plugged in; 5:13 "no real estate being wasted..." ridiculous, same size PCB and layout; 5:30 "presence of actual fuses..." demonstrating again lazy engineering and trying to save money (note that neither fuses, fuse holders or the assembly is cheaper than other "fuses-less" solutions, also note that entire Vehicles, and the charger connection boxes, from Tesla with scores of electronic modules, including very high power components of the power train have no fuses, yet are fully protected!): "hard mounted fuses...serviceability" If properly designed and agency approved, when the fuse blows there is an internal overcurrent, which is not readily repairable, especially for "garage handymen"; 9:03 Again, with the moronic evaluation and rating of electronic devices which are installed on the structure of a building by Weight! The small weight or mass is not affecting the performance of an aircraft or a vehicle! Whether it is 1 kg or 100 kg make no difference to the intended use case or application! This is substandard to the level of Munro's other videos and an embarrassment. On par with the cringeworthy analysis of Freezers from a few years ago.
