TLDR: ~260 miles of O.R. range for the Rivian Max and...much less for Donut's Cybertruck.
But keep watching to see us map out the likely maximum trail range of our Rivian R1T Dual Motor Performance MAX in Moab Utah, and then apply what we learn to Donut's tragically poor recent Cybertruck "100 mile" off-roading video: • Surviving 100 Miles Of...

Terrific video. I drive a Model Y. My basic understanding is that EPA ranges are based on 45 mph, no HVAC. Every increase of 10 mph burns 10% more electricity. (I could be incorrect. Range should drop at an increasing rate as speed increases.) AC is also a factor. When I was in Texas a few weeks ago my Tesla onboard Nav was directing me to distant Superchargers apparently not taking into account the much higher energy usage on the 80 mph Texas I-10. A couple of years ago, I went from Blanding, UT to Holbrook, AZ, 226 miles, 100 degree temps. My Tesla wasn't going to make it. For half of that drive I slowed down to 50mph (got out of other people's way) turned off the AC. With FSD I could just enjoy the view (including seeing the other side of Monument Valley). I arrived at the Holbrook Supercharger with 13 or 15 percent. The thing about going up hill? Vehicles use a lot more energy pushing air out of the way than anything else. So you could theoretically drive Lone Pine back down to Palmdale (downhill) using 0 percent battery, or even gaining some regen. When I drove down from Lake Arrowhead to the Supercharger at the bottom, I went from about 8000' to a 1000' or less. The drive was about 20 miles, not very fast (traffic). I gained another 15 to 16 miles of range. Looking at the first Tesla Semi video going 500 miles on the I-5 in California, and over Tejon Pass 4140', the graph of the charge shows significant drop going up to the pass, but apparently gaining all of it going back down. The over all graph looks like a straight slope of energy/distance, basically the climb/descent appears to completely factor out. (Doesn't violate the Laws of Thermodynamics because it's mostly pushing air.) And trolls, instead of just bashing my comment, go out and do some testing. I'd love to see some numbers. Shell in the 1960s used to do a maximum mileage run from Phoenix to Los Angeles - it's mostly downhill.

Fwiw whatever it might feel like, regenerative braking is only about 60-70% efficient. VASTLY better than the 0% at best you get from an ICE vehicle, but still not really close to 100%.

Awesome analysis. I have the max pack dual with 21 inch wheels and it does amazing off-road and the range cushion is worth it

Good investigative work on the route. I'd assumed they were on West Side Road and were going to try to go to Butte Valley and Goler Wash to Panamint, but I see you were right. What's your problem with Saline hot springs? It's not that bad. I've gone in the upper springs and been totally alone in the moss and muck and even the last time I was at the main springs there were only 3-4 weirdos, plus some coyotes.

Chevrolet may be using the Silverado name for brand recognition, but that is obviously an Avalanche.

I'm actually surprised even 3 of the chargers were even working in Green River. Most of the time only 1 or 2 ever work there

I am getting dual motor max battery white with Matt ppf and 20’ black rims all terrain tires; since this is a “made” vehicle it is coming with under clad but I have to buy the spare tire kit and order the electric tonneau cover. By the way there are no longer Guides to assist with purchase! Bummer.now we know where the 10% of staff have gone to. We can thank McKinsey & Co for this Yesterday solution? I love your UTube, hope to see you off road sometime.

We were in Big Bend right before the eclipse and were surprised how many EV's we saw down there, especially Rivians (maybe we saw you), but also Teslas, and even a Polestar. I know you could charge in Alpine, but that's 70 miles away. People must have been charging in Study Butte or Terlingua.

Mojave Road is on my list, but I’m gonna do it in my wrangler 4xE… There’s a 50kw charger at the west end of the road but getting to the east side looks like a haul. We ended up going with the Jeep a couple years ago after a challenging/discouraging trip in our Bolt from OC to Tucson in 2022. The Bolt is about to tick over 100,000 miles and it’s still going strong but I’m itching to move on from it. Once we get the specs on the Sierra AT4 I’ll decide between it and the R1T. The bidirectional charging on the GM trucks and SuperCruise are pretty compelling even if I’d prefer the garagability of the R1T.

btw, 'rumors' are that Rivian is working on an integrated home bi-directional charger kit, like what Chevy has been recently talking about with the Silverado EV. Heard this from a Rivian employee at a Rivian event a week ago, but I've seen no offical press releases along those lines.

I know there's no rock crawl with the dual motor, but do you know what the differences are off roading vs the quad? At any point did you wish you had the quad motor? Thanks

Actually we just got back from Gary's Jamboree 2024, yesterday's activity being playing around at the Prairie City OHV Park near Sacramento CA. Dual Motor did fantastic, had zero issues keeping up with anyone on any obstacles. Video to come soon, stay tuned!

The Rivian is such an awesome vehicle! Did you find that the vehicle dictated where you had to stop and you sometimes would rather have stopped at different locations compared to your old setup with your XC60 on your eclipse trip? Waiting in line behind 3 Silverados at Green river...!?! Always avoid Green river EA to start with hehe facepalm.

The road trip pace was great, 2-3 hours of driving and 20-30m of recharging, with a driver swap and bathroom break. Made 12 hour days covering 600-700 miles easy. We'll have a video on the road trip experience in due course, but really the combination of Rivian's great navigation software and Tesla's supercharger network was perfect.

Yeah from 48 cold ( Rivian spec) to 40 warm. Didn't need to go any lower for traction or flotation for what we did here, just smoothing out the washboard & bumps.
