£100,000 buys a LOT of tanks of vPower for an old BMW... i never understand why people think it's a good financial decision to purchase an EV over a perfectly comfortable, powerful, efficient 10-20yr old car. Late 90s, Early 2000's cars were GOOD.
@djtaylorutube

My reason was because there are now so many self entitled utter assholes on the UK roads, buying a car that had the highest NCAP safety rating for my family and grandchildren. I have plenty of old cars already, there's a huge difference in crash worthiness and safety features between current top NCAP cars and 10 to 20 year old cars.

There are plenty of high NCAP-scoring modern ICE cars though, so I'm not sure why an EV is a consideration -I'm also not sure I'd be entirely comfortable with a massive lithium battery under my kids' car seats in the event of an accident.@@djtaylorutube

@djtaylorutube 8 ай бұрын
@@michaelgodbold6247no it won't. For a start, few journeys are 900 miles and for those that are, there's no significant difference in a 15 hour journey because unless someone is striving non stop for 15 hours or so, during loo and food breaks is when the car would charge. Pretty simple really. Reality though is that most journeys are really within range so every day is ready for full distance if so required. I used to do a 200 mile per day commute, the EV would have been fab for that, never needing to visit a filling station every few days.

@@djtaylorutube brilliant news , guess your happy at the slave labour of children digging for your colbat and lithium, getting paid 1pound a day while they dig for 15 hours with bleeding hands. And it takes more CO2 to build an electric car than it does for petrol or diesel at a rate that it takes 10 years of driving to use the CO2 of fuel to catch up the CO2 Of making an electric car. I'll stick with my diesel that has low CO2 and a tank lasts me a month of driving before I refill at an average of 600 miles out of a tank. Electric won't get near that.

These old 6-cyl BMWs are fantastically efficient out on the open road. The first one I had (E36 325i coupe) would do about 36mpg on long runs despite the fact that I used to floor it at every opportunity (you could sort of get away with that back the early/mid 2000s). I later moved on to an E39 525i saloon which could do 42mpg on motorway runs even with the AC on (cruise control helped). Most recently I had a 330d sport auto which, despite being a rust bucket, still pulled like a train and my best figure was 53.5mpg... By contrast everyone says EVs never reach their claimed range in the real world, even if you don't use the AC, heater etc.

The Tesla Roadster was available for retail in 2008. That's 15 years ago. They cut development time by converting the Lotus Elise of the time. Same as with most (but not all) EV's. They take an existing production body/suspension and make it an EV. Think Mercedes EQC or BMW iX3. 'Old' chassis, with new running gear. Genuinely new EV's from the ground up do take longer to develop of course.

This was a bit of fun to watch, you need more of this sort of levity to temper the existential angst of your current affairs coverage! Waves of nostalgia going back to when I was a snotty kid envious of my mate flexing with his dad's 528i's remote window feature, it was the Tesla touch screen of 2001 for sure. That car also got outrageous economy, being a manual driven by a welshman it did as good as 6.8l/100km on some occasions. Although, I have a theory that there is an inverse relationship between engine sound and economy. I'm currently driving one of the thirstiest cars I've owned, an Alfa 166 3.0 (auto), it's getting 11.5l/100km, which is substantially worse than the 8.8 my 4.2l XJ8 achieved, but it does so with the best exhaust note this side of an LS3, while the Jag purred very softly indeed! That noise is worth every cent of the $3.15/l premium fuel it gobbles 😁

It is what is on the other side of the Taycan in the opening shots that is of astonishing size! It is called a MINI but is almost as big as Geoff's BMW! The way the computer in the BMW calculates the mileage range left in the tank is based on the way you drive, The 84 miles you started with was based on the way you drove to the Morgan factory. Which must have been more aggressive or faster than you did to the pub! Now it reads 85 miles if you drive at the same way as you did to the pub!

Driving like a tight ass, got about 30 miles in, and had to rush to a garage to fill up. It started misfiring.......so I wouldn't trust a range computer at all tbh. I drive a 2002 freelander and 2002 MB Vito, simple, robust, economical ish and great to work on, unlike modern shite. I had a 328i E36 Coupe, and had the M50 manifold fitted, a Simota carbon induction kit, and a remap. im telling you these late 90s early 2000s "big engine" cars they are actually quite efficient. i had 2.5 v6 omega it consumed not much more than 1.6 fsi golf but you have to be very careful. when leaving traffic lights i never pressed on gas, i always waited for car to roll then press on gas and just cruise around slowly

Back in the mid late 90’s I used to visit BMW dealers for work. There would be at least 5 to 8 cars with that 2.8 engine waiting for rebuilds at most dealers. They were very fragile for a while and a tight lipped secret.

Haha, you can compare the fuel consumption of a Boeing and conclude that the plane also lost less range than the Porsche. Irregardless of what interpretation of ‘efficiency’, it is fun to watch tho 😅 I guess that’s all what matters.

I love the fact that you both comment at the beginning how big the modern Porsche is compared to the E39, but both completely ignore how big the "mini" parked right next to it is! What has happened to modern cars? No wonder nobody uses their garages for cars anymore, & car parks are such a source of contention! House builders (& building regs) & car park designers have still not caught up with the fact that modern cars are waaaay much bigger than they used to be. Just compare an original mini side-by-side with a modern one.... literally twice the size (& weight)!

Geoff great video. But I was just looking at emmisions for petrol EV and Diesel. When it occurred to me that 10% of petrol has bio ethanol in it and 20% of my diesel is bio. The grid does not count the Co2 emmisions from burning bio mass. So if you do the maths and reduce the emmisions of ICe by the renewable fuel element the C02 emmissions are far lower. A petrol at 110g of Co2 is 99g of Co2 per km (fossil fuel 90% ethanol 10%) A diesel at 120g of Co2 has a fossil fuel Co2 per mile of 96g of Co2per km. (fossil fuel 80% bio diesel (20%) Using the same rules a Remote Emission Vehicle are 71g of Co2 per kWH (summer) 86 g of Co2 per kWh winter. grid 250 g of Co2 per kWh grid transfer efficiency 10% and charge to road efficiency of 77% summer 50% winter and 4.8 km per kWh This calculation is using summer lowest Co2 night emmisions in winter the Co2 rises significantly as the percentage of Fossil fuel generation increase massively and the gas power stations at maximum load are less efficient.

I owned a E39 528i and it is true that the range drops dramatically when cold then creeps back up as it gets warm. I traded it in for a F30. Massive mistake on my part as the F30 is crap compared to my E39. The build quality isn't there and the feel of control has gone. All my E39 needed was a respray and a tiny bit of welding to the rear inner sills. From the info I can gather the old car is now a donor. :(

An ICE car has unlimited range if you have the gas money and you can stop for 3 minutes to refuel. We know this already. They're already talking about range anxiety and charging anxiety with EV car owners.

Cor Lee’s tyres are cheap! Just cost me £1380 for 4 new Pirellis on my Jag!!! Mind you my indicators don’t self flush with water!! I really like Lee but that Porsche is a pile of crap! Like the old BMW though - built when BMWs were good.

Also, you should do one the quickest to get there with the most mileage left you should’ve covered the mileage till the end of the journey, and then revealed at the end would’ve been better🤣

because you drove carefully, the chip calculated consumption at the style you were using.... where it's previous was likely calculated at your previous driving style... at least that how it seems when you change driving style....

fantastic one:) how about a real one though between the two. with fuelling times a trip that means you need to fuel up at halfway point. that would put into perspective the real issue besides the obvious milk float soulless EV sound on a drive. and preferably with similar aged vehicles to make it fair.
Why is your mobile phone signal ALWAYS RUBBISH?!
