Brilliant. Love to think that this is the future and we can still mod vintage cars, keeping them alive for years to come.

I have both the 78 and 79 super beetle. One of them is needing a complete power train replacement. I noticed in the video there were 3 forward gears. Reminded me of the automatic stick shift Beatles from the past. I will definitely be reaching out to you for more information.

That is some pro looking work right there.

Great video. EV conversion is in the not too distant future for my '78. I had to laugh at the multiple, repeatedly slower, seat belt pulls and the double frunk release pull. Life in a Super Beetle...

Seems to have quite a bit of take off power, very nice and it looked like it handles very well I didn't see any overplay in the wheel at highway speed

Very neat job on a much loved design, do you have to do anything about front suspension, brakes or steering due to extra weight at front, i presume the original steering box is used can you get away with keeping original struts and even drum brakes at front?
@ev4u4 жыл бұрын
The converted vehicle only weighs 2,200 pounds. Far below the GVWR. No additional modifications are necessary. However, we recommend going to four wheel disc brakes just to get away from the maintenance associated with the stock VW drum brakes.
@freezerlunik4 жыл бұрын
Does this beetle have a BMS? What kind? If not, what is the maintenance/safety/rebalancing regimen for the owner to follow? Are the batteries LiFePO ₄? Thanks for being one of the handful of EV conversion pioneers, your work looks more brilliant with every build! I'm looking forward to getting my VW converted with you (saving $$$ this year).
@ev4u4 жыл бұрын
Yes on the LiFePO4 cells. Our cells are bottom balanced and no BMS is required.

Is there still a clutch on this car? Another question: apart from the rebuilding of the car, that i see is very nice (it seems a new one) how much does it cost the electric conversion?
@ev4u4 жыл бұрын
Yes we retain the clutch and transaxle. Currently classic VW Beetle conversions are $23,995. See our website for more information. Please note that we did not rebuild the car. EV4U only does conversions, we do not do repair work or restorations.

Watching from Scotland. Have to ask, why did you put charge port under the hood of the car, rather than put it where the fuel filler cap would have been? Surely it would have made more sense, especially if you were at a public charger while it’s raining?
@ev4u3 жыл бұрын
The J1772 charge port will not fit this vehicle without cutting the original sheet metal. We try not to do that whenever possible.
@Chris-bg8mk4 жыл бұрын
Very sanitary job as always Richard. Couple questions:. Why not put the plug behind the old fuel filler flap so the hood can stay closed? If you hit the reverse button, and shift to reverse, does it go forward? Cause I bet I'd mess that up at least once... Nice job guys!
@ev4u4 жыл бұрын
The fuel filler area would need to be modified (cut) to fit the J1772. We do not cut on customer's vehicles. Plus you want the bonnet open to allow for the charger to stay cool. In response to your forward/reverse question, yes.
@c.a.nixiii4650 Жыл бұрын
I asked the same question!
@typhoon320i4 жыл бұрын
So the clutch is still installed, correct? I see you going between 2nd and 4th it looks like.
@ev4u4 жыл бұрын
The conversion retains the clutch and transaxle. We are shifting between second, third, and fourth gears.
@petekovacevic32414 жыл бұрын
Any issues with the clutch or transmission handling the torque of the electric motor?
@ev4u4 жыл бұрын
Not with this setup. We use a lightened flywheel and a stage one clutch pack.
@DwightCervantes4 жыл бұрын
How does it look like under the motor? Is the motor protected against road dirt and water splash?
@ev4u4 жыл бұрын
No additional protection added. My personal Karmann Ghia has gone 100,000 miles without issue. Plus we have done a lot of vehicles for customers.
@michaelgurge5463 жыл бұрын
Would you get more than 80 miles by doing the conversion to a Volkswagen camper with bigger battery pack? Btw, I love what you guys are doing!
@ev4u3 жыл бұрын
As long as you stay within the payload capacity of the vehicle.
@timwilliams98654 жыл бұрын
Do you prefer super beetles or regular bug when doing conversions like this?
@ev4u4 жыл бұрын
Personally I prefer the standard Beetle.
@terryjackson45382 жыл бұрын
Just a few points. 60 - 80 mile won't get me from my home town to the nearest city without having to stop to charge. Until usable range hits 200+ mile conversions will only be practical for town applications. The usable space to put luggage behind the rear seat is now gone. The space to put luggage in the trunk is now gone. At least this one still can carry 4 passengers. And because you already explained the charge port I won't bring that up. Your conversion looks very good and makes sense for the usage you intend. Just pointing out it has limitations.
@ev4u2 жыл бұрын
Current range on the VW Beetle conversion is approximately 100 miles.
@terryjackson45382 жыл бұрын
@@ev4u How long do you think it will be before you can do a conversion that gets a range of 200 mile? For us in Australia that is 320km. Almost every car I own can do 300km (186 mile) to a tank of fuel. My example is that I live 240km (150 mile) from our state capital. I can drive there for a car show on 1 tank of fuel. I fuel up and drive home after the show. I often do this with my everyday work vehicle. Drive down, run around buying work materials or other supplies and drive home again. Yes I buy fuel, it takes 5- 10 minutes of my day. I'm not against ev, I'm looking at your conversions because I want to have one done at some point. I'm interested in your opinion as someone doing these conversions as to how long before we can expect a conversion that gives a decent range, doesn't add weight above the original kerb weight of the car and doesn't diminish the luggage space of the car from its original design.
@ev4u2 жыл бұрын
No idea, I'm not that good at predicting the future. But it's coming. I have been driving electric conversions everyday since 2008. Range has never been an issue for me. My daily commute (round trip) is 50-80 miles. I charge when I have time just to keep things topped off.

Does shifting thru gears conserve electricity? Does coasting under load recharge? What is the average range? What else is in the space under the rear seat cushion? Is there heat or a/c? Why didn't you use a potentiometer on the pedal instead of a throttle cable? I've had a Leaf, so I'm comparing to that.
@ev4u4 жыл бұрын
In response to your questions in order. Yes. Coasting does not use any energy, nor does it produce any. Decelerating (not coasting) creates regenerative braking which charges the pack. Eighty miles. 12 volt battery and the DC/DC converter. Not in this car. The ergonomics of the pedal was designed by VW, why reinvent the wheel. Easier to use stock components. Plus we could put this back to stock if desired, quickly and easily and do one would be the wiser.
@28cruzin4 жыл бұрын
Why isn't the charging port behind the old gas door? I wouldn't want to leave the hood open when charging outside.
@ev4u4 жыл бұрын
Because on this model it would require cutting on the car and we do not cut on customer's cars. On the earlier standard Beetles with the fuel door, that is where the J1772 is located. Just does not fit well on the 1979 Super Beetle.
@Blueisdeath14 жыл бұрын
Is this bug heavier? If so, it must ride better on windy days.

COULD the same technology be suitable for 1930's american cars or would they still weight too much to be practical?
@ev4u4 жыл бұрын
We have converted American vehicles from the 1930's. Many are not as heavy as you might think. Modern vehicles with all of the safety features are heavier than most imagine. But a lot of the antique vehicles may surprise you.
