A nice paint job can really bring a costume or prop to the next level, and in this video I’m going to be showing you a couple different mini-tutorials to help you with your cosplay painting! I use a lot of these techniques often for my cosplay projects, and I hope that you find them helpful!

When using painter's tape, you're supposed to paint over the tape with the color of paint that you want UNDER the tape. Let it dry, then paint inside the cutouts with the color you want the details to be. This way, you get sharper edges and no paint leaking under the tape. All masking tape is meant to be used this way, though if the underneath paint is detailed already, a clear primer should also work.

Your tutorial helped me more than any other, since you are using the same materials that I will. No fancy airbrushes, no blabering about different brands of paint I don't know... Just straightforward and making mistakes so I can see and avoid them. I have a question: If I want the EVA foam to get a particular shape (for example, the one in the WW armor), that's when I need to heat it with an air dryer? Or is it just useful before painting and not for sculpting? Thanks!

I’m so happy you found the tutorial helpful!! And yes, heat is great for shaping the foam! Just heat it up on both sides, and hold it in the new shape you want until it cools!

Should you use a clear coat to seal the paint when you're done? What kind do you use?

Thank you so much! I'm making armor for a 1/6 scale doll and using Eva foam, so it's great to know that Mod Podge will work as a primer! Should I paint or shape the armor first?

You’ll want to shape it first! If you paint it first, the paint will crack if you try to shape it!

This was great. I had stalled out on my first build because i was nervous about the painting process. Just curious, do you use a heat gun on the foam befor you prime it?

I’ve seen some people use mod podge then plastadip, do you have to use plastadip or can it just be mod podge?

Min 2:30 Your armor looks diferent than the test piece before. A lot rougher. Did you do there something diferent? Mix the glue with something?

I'm working on a prop and I don't really want to paint it by hand since it will take longer, can I use spray paint? And if so what would you recommend? (I'm using eva foam)
@winterstarcosplay
@winterstarcosplay 2 жыл бұрын
Spray paint usually isn’t the best option for foam, since spray paint is not flexible, so it’ll crack pretty easily. There may be some flexible spray paint options, though

What do you mean by heat sealed it with a heat gun and then prime it? Is it necessary to use the heat gun before the pod modge?
@tortul1462
@tortul1462 Жыл бұрын
Yes. Foam haves small pores, heat sealing it makes those pores bond with the EVA making it smooth. Much like a wounded skin. Also so that you won't waste much prime and it can ruin the texture of your creation

How watered down is your black acrylic paint?
@winterstarcosplay
@winterstarcosplay 3 жыл бұрын
It varies a lot! Sorry, I know that’s not the most helpful answer. I like it watery enough so it can be quickly and easily spread out over all of my foam piece.

@@derekritchie5556 I’ve never had it crack in my experience! The key is to use a flexible primer on your foam
