Part 16: • Evander Holyfield on B...
--------
Boxing legend Evander Holyfield discussed the dramatic events leading up to his third fight in a trilogy with Riddick Bowe, referred to as "The Final Chapter." Holyfield was the first in line for the championship fight but fell sick after eating some tainted food in L.A. ten days prior. Despite his sickness and against all advice, Holyfield decided to fight because he couldn't afford to lose the $10M he was being offered. That fight is considered the most brutal he ever fought, especially since it was cut short after 8 rounds - with Holyfield being tackled. Later, Holyfield reveals that he was diagnosed with hepatitis and was mad about losing. However, he felt the illness had put him in a position to gain the championship title.

Old friend of mine was good friends w Evander. He called him one night and had the champ wish me a happy birthday. Talking w the champ was pretty cool. Evander was so nice I felt bad because it was kind of late. But it made my day.

Bowe may have won the trilogy but he was never the same again after his wars with Holyfield. Holyfield ain’t someone u want to go to war with u got to box that man Lennox Lewis never gave him any openings to exchange box hit tie him up and circle out all night. Holyfield went at everybody it’s pretty amazing the longevity he had in his career.

The dude knocked down Riddick Bowe while he was sick with hepatitis, and he took the best boxer in the world at that point to the brink of losing. I don't even think Holyfield was knocked out. It looked more like he was so exhausted that he simply fell down after taking a barrage of shots, and still trying to fight. That fight was brutal, and crazy as hell. He almost pulled off the W.

C’mon people, of course Holyfield is suffering the effects of many years in championship fights in the heavyweight division. He was a rocked-up light heavyweight with a granite chin, but not huge power. That lends itself to several really entertaining fights, but an abundance of punishment as well.

One bad thing about Holyfield, he always blames his losses on something else. I've never heard him say I just lost without an excuse behind it
@joeblough261
@joeblough261 7 ай бұрын
He made no excuses for his 1st loss vs. Bowe. None. He didn't really make any excuses in the 1st Moorer fight, when he could easily complain about the crooked scoring when Roth scored Rd 2 a 10-10 round when Holyfield scored a solid knockdown. Unprecedented to not give a 10-9 let alone a 10-8, which then would've made it a majority draw and Holy would retained his titles. He just said he knew Moorer won, and simply acknowledged the reality that he was messed up during the fight. Whether it was the shoulder, heart, we'll never know, but as the doctor famously said at the press conference, "Evander Holyfield fought 12 rounds for the heavyweight championship essentially at heart failure". There was something wrong with him, even Teddy Atlas begged and screamed at Moorer to fight harder in the corner, "There's something WRONG with this guy Mike." So that's not making excuse, it's just acknowledging what actually happened.

Fighting the terrifying punchers like Riddick Bowe and especially George Foreman (not to mention sparring the monster David Tua), is what really prepared Holyfield for the Tyson fight. Not to mention that he'd been on the deep end and come out stronger on the other side, whereas Tyson hadn't done that. That's really what won him the fight against Mike (yes there were the head butts and all that, but both Holyfield and Tyson were dirty in that regard).

What he meant Vlad, is that the only reason he got the Tyson fight was because Don & Mike thought he was finished and that it would be a bigger payday vs. an easier opponent than Lennox, plus Lennox refused to give Don options whereas Holyfield did bc he was more desperate at the time, without a title and coming off the Bowe loss and the lackluster Czyz fight. (I disagree with everyone on the Czyz fight, he looked perfectly fine and beat Czyz half to death, it was just awkward bc it was the 1st time Holyfield has been the bigger guy in the ring in like 10 years)
