Holyfield was such class in the post-fight interview, unlike so many fighters who want to make an excuse. He gave all credit to Cooper. He could've blamed it on overtraining, going from the scheduled Tyson fight, then the replacement Damiani backing out, then Cooper. He could've chosen not to acknowledge that Cooper forced him to fight a war, instead he could've said, "yes I tried too hard for the hometown crowd" to Larry. All class.

I would argue that Holyfield is an underrated Heavyweight...on one hand he is the only 4-time Heavyweight champion and he gets plenty of recognition from all-time heavyweight greats debates and lists...on the other hand Holyfield's record as a Heavyweight was 25-10 with 1 NC and 2 Draws (one of which was an indisputable loss to Lennox Lewis, so he really should be 25-11 as a Heavyweight). That's not exactly a record that most would gush over. He fought a lot of good competition and had some wars in the ring, so he deserves the recognition, but underrated?? I wouldn't say that.

The guys at the top are good though - Fury is damn near 7ft and moves unbelievably gracefully for his size. Wilder has no conventional boxing skill but he learned how to use what he has to great effect. And Joshua is actually a good fighter, he just can't get out of his own messed up head. And Andy Ruiz, even though he's the biggest slob of them all definitely can fight. After breaking up with Joe Frazier in '87 (after the loss to Carl Williams), Cooper was never the same. Whit Lowery (the guy you see in his corner) was a good coach, but not a mentor unlike Frazier. And it was exactly what Cooper would have needed to have real success in the heavyweight division. Cooper smoked, did drugs and drank, then later in his career he started eating pretty badly, but when he was motivated and he didn't give up, he could have given anyone a hard time.

This fight game plan lack of discipline is just setting holyfield up for Riddick Bowe...smh...I was around when this fight took place let me tell you back in those days in the early 90s the whole world was obsessed with knockouts because of Mike Tyson and I think holyfield drunk the Kool-Aid on the KO craze of the late 80s and 90s and really was trying to show that he could be a knockout puncher especially after he beat buster Douglas....holyfield should have had one of the longest reigns of all time but he got so obsessed with trying to prove he could knock guys out it cost him victories that he could have easily won with his tremendous Superior boxing skills. he could have easily won this fight with footwork and in and out combination punching and counters.... But he chose to get in yet another epic "avoidable" war with a journeyman fighter with nothing to lose.this is what keeps him from being in my opinion the greatest heavyweight of all time that lack of discipline to stay to a fight plan.

THAT WAS DEFINITELY A KNOCKDOWN FROM BERT COOPER TO EVANDER!! When the ropes hold you up from not going down that's a knockdown in the rule book. If evander did not grab the ropes on the way down he would have fallen all the way to the floor. IT WAS A KNOCKDOWN NOT EVEN ARGUABLE!!

But there was no standing 8 count in the rules for this fight. Lane should not have stopped the fight and let Cooper carry on.

@@Seanryan2001 the referee saved Holyfield later on too, when Holyfield was completely gassed and the ref stepped in to give him a break to replace the torn glove.

Had Cooper jumped on Holyfield when he was on queer street against the ropes, it only would have taken 1 or 2 more clean shots to put him down for real and maybe finish him off. Instead Cooper gave Holyfield a huge break by allowing Mills Lane to step in and save him.

Bert shook him bad and came close. Mills Lane gave Evander a standing 8 count which he wasn't supposed to do. Might have saved Evander. RIP Bert Cooper.

It wasn't a standing 8, it's considered a knockdown if the ropes are the only thing holding you up, so it was a ten count off a ruled knockdown

@@peacefulbliss1 Yeah, if you watch the end of the video Lampley interviews Mills Lane. I remember this being the fight that kind of put the whole concept of "ropes holding you up = knockdown" into the consciousness of boxing fans, and also brought up the inconsistent rules at the time (3 knockdown rule, standing 8s, for example) that weren't consistent as the Unified Rules weren't in place yet I think.

Bert was fixing to quit, but changed his mind, and I am glad Mills Lane stopped it. Look at all those upper cuts all night and the way his head was being knocked upwards isn’t good on your brain.

WTF is Foreman talking about? The ref never saved Holyfield, he followed the rules and when the ropes held Holy up, he did the right thing by calling a knockdown and counting. When else would he have stopped the fight? Cooper landed a few more punches but for the full last minute of the round Holyfield had recouped and was beating Bert half to death.
