Do you have a new Tesla or other EV, but don't have a good charging solution? Well Evannex and NeoCharge have you covered: as long as you have a dryer in your house, you can easily connect your Tesla/EV to your 240V dryer outlet AND still dry your clothes! This solution--a NeoCharge 240V splitter, plus an adapter and a 30' (9m) 50 Amp cable--is so good that I am going to use it permanently to solve my charging problem in my new house. Here's how to hook everything up, how it all works, and even the best way to use the products. And this will work just as well on your new Tesla, Chevy Bolt, Ford Mach E, Volkswagen (VW) iD3 or iD4, or other EV on the market.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I forgot to mention in the video but you HAVE to set your Tesla charger to 24 Amps max when using this solution (in the car, it's Charging, then look for the amps setting and hit "-" until it gets down to 24 Amps). This is crucial as you are never supposed to draw more than 80% of the rated current (24 = 80% of 30 Amps). For other cars, it's the same deal, just figure out how to set the max current to 24 Amps. So sorry I forgot to mention this crucial point in the video itself!
Note: from time to time I receive products for review from Evannex, including the items discussed in this video. I do not receive any funding nor commissions from the company, and all of my opinions are my own.

Why don't you think about setting the wall charger outside near the circuit breaker when you have the 2nd car? Then you don't need to run 100+ ft line to the garage.
@Dithermaster
@Dithermaster 2 жыл бұрын
All it takes is forgetting to verify the 24A setting *once* and this is a bad fire hazard. I would not trust the car to remember the 24A setting permanently (a software update or GPS location mess-up could make it forget). I would buy a 14-50 to 14-30 adapter for the end of your extension cable, and the 14-30 Tesla Mobile Connector adapter so the car always knows to only draw 24A. Alternatively, and likely much better, I'd wire the Wall Connector to the 14-50, but set the DIP switches so it only allows 24A draw. If you get the Model 3, you can chain Wall Connectors in a load-share mode so they together won't let the cars draw more than the set current. Perfect solution for two cars.

Cool solution. Just a word of caution: It may be against your local electrical code to run that wire through a wall. You should still be able to use your ultimate solution...but it might require a little re-work where you have (instead of just punching through the wall) a "pass through outlet" of sorts where you have a male connector on one wall (laundry) , and a female connector on the other side (garage), with a small run of in-wall rated cable between the two. Note...I am not an electrician...but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once.

I was about to make the same comment. That would require a permit and inspection where I live. Even the low voltage wiring (network and audio) that I ran myself throughout my house got a long look by an inspector looking at some other work I had going on. Luckily I knew to use plenum-rated cables, correct color-coded junction boxes, etc.

My breaker box was completely full and thought about a splitter box, but it's kind of an expensive single point of failure. I decided to steal my dryer circuit for the car charger and put in a compact 120V electric dryer. This won't work if you have a wife and kids though. For a single guy it works great! 🙂 And if I ever sell my house, it comes with two dryers. 👍

Electricity is fire in the wire. If you do have a loss related to that "pretty permanent solution", it'll give your insurance an easy out when they send the adjustor and he sees that mess. You might as well bite the bullet at set yourself up with the properly specified and properly located infrastructure for charging for 2 cars. If you were to want to sell that house, you'll need to repair your fire rated wall you penetrated and do a proper electrical installation anyway, so might as well bite the bullet and do it now...

A few years ago I purchased that extension cord and all of the adapters from Amazon for half of what Evanex was charging for them. This was before the switching box. I wanted to be able to plug into any type of RV outlets in case I found myself in a bind. The smaller RV's use 30 amp 120 volt plugs and the biggest ones just use MEMA 14-50, but I believe that some parks only have 120 volts because they don't have out of phase power, especially if they are not hooked to the grid.

Dr, those extra non-permanent connecting points you introduced in your solution is concerning. Also, try to get a double GFCI breaker for your dryer circuit.

Regarding the 24 amp limitation, even if the circuit were a full 50 amp NEMA 14-50 outlet circuit, the Tesla cable will not allow the Model Y to be set any higher than 32 amps anyway, so with the amperage to 24 amps, you will be getting a full 75% of the maximum possible anyway. (This translates into very close to 22 miles of range added per hour, or a nice 80% charge overnight (say, 12 hours).)

Hello, you may want to lower your charge rate. You have the Tesla mobile connector connected to a 14-50 outlet (it will try to draw 32amps) but the neocharge and your original dryer wall outlet is only rated for up to 24 amps (continuous).
@brianbeasley7270
@brianbeasley7270 2 жыл бұрын
Since other people may well use this solution, I completely agree with Kai C. The NEMA 14-50 adapter plug on the Tesla mobile charger tells the unit that it is plugged into a 50 Amp outlet and it will attempt to charge at 32 Amps which is its maximum. This will overload the actual 30 Amp circuit for the dryer which is rated for 24 Amps continuous as Kai states. This is a serious issue since if the breaker doesn't trip, it can overheat the wires with a possible fire in the walls! Yikes. The other way to avoid this issue is to use the NEMA 14-30 adapter with the Tesla Mobile Charger which tells the unit to limit the current to 24 Amps automatically. You would need a different extension cord with a 14-30 male and female plug on each end respectively. You may well have limited the current in your Tesla but anyone trying this with the 14-50 extension cable and adapter should definitely know this is a must!

A good "cable guy" can make clean drywall cuts and put in the mounting brackets that allow trim plates to make that installation look great. Here in California, the cable has to be Class 2 and/or Class 3 rated to run through the wall. I've installed thousands of telephone jacks, TV cable outlets, HDMI in-wall cables, and some time ago S-Video, Component Video, DVI, Composite Video + audio, and other cables for projectors, TV's, business telephone systems, computer networks, etc. etc. You're correct, a properly-installed NEC-approved charger cable from your panel to 100 feet away is super expensive.

Yeah it’s crazy that the car is the priority clearly in a house the dryer should always be the priority because it would be used maybe 2 to 3 times per week. Where is the Tesla would be charged Because you use it priority because you multiple hours per day. I just ordered a “splitvolt” has the dryer as a priority and I’m excited to test it out. I saw this one also but I see very few times where id need to have 24-30 more miles or wet clothes going to work the next day. Also setting timers and reminders is ridiculous due to the spitter refusing the allow the dryer to be in the top spot/priority

The federal tax credit for 30% (up to $1000 for residential) of the cost of purchasing and installing an EV charging station has been extended to 2021. It might make sense to do the electrical work now in case the rebate doesn't get renewed. Your state might also have a tax incentive, too.

That box is very, very smart, without it your car would try to pull to 32 amps because the mobile charger has the NEMA 14-50 adapter connected to it and that's how it knows how much current to pull! I am very, very impressed! I just noticed that you mentioned setting the amperage correctly in the "show more" tab. People have gotten in trouble from using extension cords like our NEMA 14-50 RV cord, because it bypasses Tesla's built in automatic settings.

This install seems a little jury rigged to me. Any electrician looking at this would cringe. It helps to be handy. This job could easily have looked professional but it’s a little late now. Being in a hurry to get something done usually comes back to bite you. Not to be picky, but it looks like you’ve made a lot more work for yourself. Installing a proper junction box in the laundry and one out in the garage isn’t too difficult but the sheet rock repair will take someone with experience, that is unless you don’t care about aesthetics. Great channel by the way.

How about drying your laundry outside instead of wasting electricity when sun and wind will do it for free? Also, this kind of extension-cord installation is pretty dangerous, the cable can get kinked pretty easily, your cat could chew on it etc. If you ask an electrician first, what kind of cable and fusebox you need, you can buy cable and box yourself, run the cable and let the electrician only do the termination on both ends. That should be pretty cheap, yet still up to code and you don't need this crappy relay box.

I find it very difficult to understand a simple problem that you are solving with something so utterly complex. Furthermore, it goes against one of the fundamental reasons you bought a Tesla in the first place. First, I have to assume that you have an electric dryer. Second, an electric dryer consumes TONS of electricity. Third, there are heat pump dryers that use a quarter of the amount of electricity and they use a regular 120V outlet. Finally, if you get a heat pump dryer, you don't have to have this silly, complicated device in the first place. Come on man! I thought you were a man of research! First principles! Simple solutions! I also have to agree with some of the other comments. If you're going through fire rated walls with this device, you're asking for big trouble. Get a dedicated line to the garage and make sure it's installed properly. Hell, you could do it yourself with the proper research.
