Let's have a look at this Chevrolet Cobalt that came with a code P0446 for the EVAP Vent Solenoid Performance. I have notice that most people will get sucked into the trap of changing parts based on code definition instead of code setting criteria. Let's have a look at this car and see how the code could send you down the wrong path if you don't look at the EVAP system as a whole to make a fast diagnosis.

Hi everyone! I’m mechanic my self, working in this field for many years, 20 years I definitely support this guy. He knows his shit very well. Watch the way he explained things .He doesn’t just change parts, he actually troubleshoot the problem first and most importantly he explained everything in detail so well . Good work buddy.

The fact that you're such a conscientious person that tells it straight is a great thing to see. I'll never get tired of that. Honesty is something that kind of slips by the wayside in some shops. Thanks for the video.

Excellent Job! Your understanding on how the system operates is what lots of mechanics lack. I use to work with at a Chevy dealership with about 10 mechanics and my observation was that only about 2 -3 out of them were were really good at diagnosing the less common problems that needed to be dug into further. Some were only good at R&R.

Just wanted to say thanks. Ive been chasing a p0446 code on a aveo for awhile. Swapped out both the vent and pressure solenoids and still had it. Went over every line and seal on that fuel system and couldn't find a leak. After watching your video i checked the data and it showed the car thought it had 16" of vacuum in the tank. Pulled the sensor and checked output voltage and sure enough it was stuck at 5 volts open air or pressured up. Cheapest part i have ever bought for that car. Thanks for the informative video.

i'm going through the exact same problem on my aveo right now. i've been chasing codes left and right trying to figure out exactly what the problem is, and p0446 has been there for a WHILE. finally caved and went to a mechanic after watching this video and what do you know, that's the problem. i'm waiting for the shipment and it was very easily one of the most cheap parts i've spent on this forsaken car. i thought it was just me with the aveo problems.

This helped out a ton! This was the only video I could find that actually had the same issue as my Cobalt SS. My code was actually P0455, but it indicated that my Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor was bad, which it was true. Thank you so much!

The Ford trucks we had used a similar system. Once I learned the relationship of the fuel tank pressure sensor, the vent valve, the purge valve and other components, it became easier to diagnose Evap problems. Then came the 2009 Dodge Avengers, with no shop, Internet, or documentation support. Luckily I only saw two of those! Great Video!

Hey Eric, just had to come back to this video after a few weeks to thank you for making this. I've been very slowly attempting to fix my p0446 on my Chevy Malibu. I tried all the obvious -- the fuel cap, easy to reach sensors, etc.. As you know with the NYS inspections, gotta get that money light off by any means possible, so I gave up and brought it to a mechanic who ALSO couldn't figure it out...... And it ended up being the fuel tank pressure sensor. Thanks again for making an in depth video on this, I can finally stop getting parking tickets for having an expired inspection 🎉

@@NIGHT-tj7ksgreat question. I’m perplexed. I replaced the vent solenoid on my 07 Colorado because it was cracked. That’s took away my check engine light for a while. Now it comes and goes but still persistent, p0446. Is it possible that the canister is clogged or still leaning towards tank pressure sensor

South Main you are such a great resource of auto troubleshooting info - thanks again. Now had a similar issue - different fix. Last couple of days we bought a used 06 COBALT. Lots of miles but good price. Test drive of the car showed no engine light, everything was OK, ran smooth and good. Next day the engine light came on, now I don't have the high end code reader you have that does all those tests, mine just shows the codes. First thing I had to do was figure why I had no power on the OBD port to my basic code reader. Like alot of vehicles this is powered by the 15 amp fuse for a cigarette lighter. Now even though this car didn't have a lighter, it still had a fuse for it and sure enough it was blown. I think it powered the AUX 12 volt plugin port as well ?? not sure - or at least the one on the dash. Any ways quick fix on that, new fuse and now the reader had power on the port. Codes came up as P0300 - misfire, P0446 the one we are talking about here, and P2101 throttle body position performance? Anyway I checked with KZfaq and of course went to yours first, and OH MY, well I guess lets get started. First I started thinking? We also just filled the tank with gas yesterday and the 446 code is related to venting I wonder if the gas cap is bad, removed and it looked brand new, Cleared off abit of grime on the seat and rubber made sure it was back on tight. Went in and cleared the codes and they did not return - still fine today. Just wondering what may have cause the misfire code and the TB position code? no worries right now as they have not come back either.

The Gatling gun approach can be very hard on the customer's pocket. I can see now that tackling these issues without a basic understanding of the workings of the circuit in hand and the ability to select the proper tools for diagnosis will lead to unnecessary mutilation and replacement of functional parts.Great practical video for anyone with an itch to shoot first and ask questions later.

Hi, Eric. I'm getting codes p0455 and p0456 in my Civic 2018. I checked the purge selenoid in the engine bay with a vacuum pump, and it holds a vaccum pretty well. I also checked the canister purge solenoid by blowing air through with my mouth, and it seems ok, too. It's constantly open. I checked all hoses, and there are no visible cracks. What else do you think I should check? This car only has 20,000 miles on it, but it's already out of the three year warranty. Do I need to apply voltage to any sensors or both purge solenoids as well? I have a small power converter at home that I could use for that in case I need 5v to run the test. Thanks for all your videos.

Nice diagnosis & fix! You're right about testing b/c sooner or later the percentages get you and in comes a car serving humble pie to bring us back to why we test first. DTCs diagnosis on a scan tool is an art in itself determining what it really means b/c the PCM is just reporting what it sees. PCMs are notorious for reporting crank sensor faults and in reality it is the cam sensor that is bad. Performance codes or calculation codes can be fun. I hope that wiring mess was not a garage b/c it should always leave the shop the same or better than it arrived. I ordered the AESwave kit after I seen you using it and I love it! Used it yesterday on a P2135 fault and found the spread terminal doing drag tests with the kit test leads. Sweet kit!

Yep, not understanding how the systems work and interact can cause a wild goose chase. See it all the time where someone went to Da Zone, and they tell them Code PXXXX means you replace part YYYY. Then the light pops back on and it's the same code.... It's like a P0300, "oh that means you need plugs or cap/rotor/wires" Maybe, but it could also be a bad fuel pump, plugged fuel filter, bad intake gasket, vacuum leak, exhaust leak above the O2 sensor and more. Knowing what that code is and how it is processed puts you ahead of a large percentage of folks.

I have a very similar 2007 Cobalt (vs 2008). It has a P0446 code. I recently purchased it and it has had the code since then. I don't have a fancy scanner, but I'll keep checking what I can. I tried a new gas cap with no luck. I had noticed that while filling with gas it tends to shut off before it gets close to full. I pulled the charcoal canister off thinking it might be plugged, but I'm able to blow easily into any of the 3 ports. After blowing into each port, I cleaned the vent filter internal to the canister while I had it out, but it wasn't that dirty. While I had the charcoal canister off I tried to blow into each of the three Lines that connect to the charcoal canister. The big Vent line is easy to blow into (just vents to atmosphere). I can't blow into the little Purge line, but that makes sense as the Purge Valve at the engine is N.C. I then removed the gas cap and tried to blow into the large line that goes to the gas TANK, but it felt like I was blowing up a stiff balloon. It would build pressure and then blow back in my face. Look at 6:04 in the video. This large line also has a Tee fitting in it that connects to a 3/8" line that goes up the fill tube and connects into the fill tube just below the restricter plate/gas cap. Maybe the large line to the gas TANK has a rollover valve or something with some restriction, but the 3/8" line probably does not. Is there a reason I can't easily blow into this TANK line, or is this a sign of a problem (blockage, etc.)? If there is a blockage this could explain the shutting off while filling, and perhaps the P0446 Code.

Im running into some trouble. I got an error code for a fuel tank pressure sensor. So I bought the part, dropped my fuel tank only to realize for some reason there isn't one installed, however there is a socket for it. So as I go to install the FTP sensor I don't see a three pin wiring harness anywhere to connect it too. The only wiring harness that leads to the middle of the fuel tank, is the wiring for the fuel pump module. Any thoughts on why my 2000 chevy express 3500 is missing a FTP sensor, and the wiring harness for it?

The vent valve still ok and the evaporative fuel pressure sensor was frozen at 4.90 V. The sensor was also warm to the touch - so i suspect that it had some sort of internal short going on inside.

Hey! So I'm in the market for a new scanner. How are you liking OTC Encore? It looks like an awesome scanner.

I had the same issue. I have a 00 lesabre and it threw a code for a evap fuel tank pressure sensor high circuit so I just replaced it.(p0446 or p0457 something like that).I now have an intermittent p0440 code which is a general evap leak code. I am assuming that the sensor was bad, but now the system can actually detect a leak lol. Not to sure what it is. Don’t have access to a fancy diagnostic tool. I’m assuming it’s a venting problem thought because when the leak is detected and the light comes on it is when my tank is at around a 1/4 tank. When I go to fill up the tank and take the gas cap off i can hear air being sucked into the tank. I also found out when I have the car in the on position and the fuel pump is primed and I am filling up with that code on it cause fumes ( and gas when I am pumping) to be pushed out of the gas filler. Any ideas anyone?

When it costs $200 to have a mechanic properly diagnose which of the 5 $20 parts are the problem, I'll save at least $100 and just do some parts swapping.

I am currently diagnosing a P0446 on a 2002 GMC Sonoma. I also have a "healthy" 2003 GMC Sonoma of my own. I tested the vent valve on the 2002 and it works properly, open when off, closed when on. The purge valve also seems fine (no vacuum when closed). The pressure sensor on the 2002 reacts to testing (it's not "stuck") and shows near zero pressure when the cap is off. I suspected the canister was restricted so I compared some pressure values between the faulty vehicle and the "known good" one. With engine running, vent valve open, and purge valve at 100%; the tank vacuum on the problem truck goes down to 22"Hg but on the good truck it only goes down to 4.3"Hg. This seems to indicate a restriction of the vent path through the canister. Anyone else have this experience?

Would an issue like this cause a crank-no-start but only on warm humid days?
