The pads and air output are actually warmed up by the continually flow of relatively hotter water that circulates from the water pump. So by stopping the water pumping for very short periods of time, then the pads will become much colder and make the air output colder. Use a Repeat-Cycle-Timer to cycle the water pump on and off, for maybe 1 min on, and then 3 or 4 min off. The air output becomes colder, and energy is saved.

i saw this type of filer in a big cooler and it was so so cold and fresh where i went to eat food they were using this kind of slim cooler and i couldnt able to understand what kind of cooler was that now after seeing ur video now i got it.... with this kind of filer it cools so nice

It's cool down from 3.8°C to 12.7°C on average. Sometimes it can cool down to 15.7°C. It may have a air filter to pre-filter the air as the cooling pad continues their job. The pad is made out of carton paper. It can be cut by a hot wire or a saw. It's a high quality cooler.

I use the thick Aspen on my window unit, a champion sd 3000. On my portalble champion that originally had an expensive cardboard pad which is very thick, I use the blue pad with an Aspen pad, with the Aspen pad going on the inside, and I go out in the driveway on a 114 degree day and get under my 3/4 ton truck and work all day with that evap cooler blowing at me from the side of the truck. I had to make a deflector out of sheet metal mounted with strong magnets to guide the flow of air on me, of course.

Swamp coolers for dry areas, where evaporation happens quickly. It also helps moisten the air for easier breathing. AC for humid areas; helps dry the air for easier breathing.

Hello! My air cooler brand, DAIKIO, have a very thin filter media separate with a thick cooling pad. So, the maintenance of my air cooler is very simple, you need to add water back into the machine if the machine is empty any if the air filter is dirty, displace it and clean it under the hand soap and water with brush.

Hello! The DAIKIO cooling pad is green to prevent buildup of mold, mildew and mosses during the operation. The pad is designed for 45 degree downward airflow to hold up all dust and the air filter designed with super thin vanadium-tungsten wires for the super clean air. I will explain why cooling pad keep them clean and water tank becoming dirtier during operation. The reason why this happen because the cooling pad filters the solid air pollutants. Liquid and gaseous one are filtered by a air filter. Then, the water washes away these solid pollutants into the tank and these pollutants deposits at the bottom of the tank and contaminates the water. So, after the last hour of the last day of your cooler operation, you need to clean the tank, air filter and sometimes, the air filter for keeping the quality of air cooler for the operation in the next summer.

I had a home inspector pass my Evaporative cooler in February here in Utah, where temperatures average between 35 and 50. Is this even possible? What temperatures in Spring do you recommend to start or service swamp coolers for summer use.

Buff Brown, I think the DAIKIO is the best air cooler in the world. The incoming air is filtered before enter the cooling pad to cool. The machine is can be used in any humidity. Please rate the quality of the air cooler.

Dear Buff, dont bother john s. Now my question is: how do I fix the water pump? I have an air cooler SYMPHONY model DiET 35i. The water tank red dot keep on blinking and the cooler doesn't work. I press the COOLER function button but nothing happens. Like if the fact that the water level is low doesn't allow the pump to work or simply the water pump doesn't work. ONE MORE THING. The possible cause of it could be that I turn that think upside down and some water left ih the tank came out from somewhere next to the center of the cooler. Thanks. Guido from Italy.

Question: I live in the Phoenix AZ area, where the inside of my garage can easily become 120 degrees on a mild day. I'm building a portable evaporative cooler to cool it down so I can actually do some work in there. I got my hands on a free, but very large cooler on wheels (meaning igloo type ice chest) from a restaurant that was going out of business. It's literally 36" tall, x 30" wide x 22" deep. I don't have a need for such a large ice chest, so I figured I'd turn it into a portable swamp cooler for my garage. Since I don't have a water source in my garage, I intend to use the ice chest as the water tank, and mount the evaporative system on top, with a pump trickling water down the pads, and back into the tank (ice chest). My question: Is there a benefit or a disadvantage of adding ice to the water in the cooler? In other words, if I'm pumping ice cold water through the pads, will this be a benefit by blowing air through already cold wet pads, or will it actually hinder the evaporation and cooling properties of the system?

Netflixry Great question. You will get cooler air to a point. Try this. Run the system with just water and take a temperature reading, then add ice and take another temperature reading and see what the difference is. Let me know what you find.

I can buy Aspen wood fiber cooling pads for relatively cheap, the problem I'm finding is that it comes in 1/2" thickness when my door seems to need about a 2", how much will the 1/2" swell?

Is there a timer on the market that can me installed on a swamp cooler control box? I want the swamp cooler to switch to low pump at 7am, but I'm not awake that early, so I want a timer to do that for me and then I want to increase the flow about 11am or switch the pump setting to high and I want a timer to do that too. I want something similar to the "Nest" for air conditioning units.

Hi Eva, I wanted just what you described, so I bought a wafer thermostat (cheap) and wired it into the water pump instead of whole cooler. why? because the pump cycles quicker than the whole cooler takes to cycle so you get your temp adjustment Pronto. Been doing this for years and loving it.

My cooler has that last filter installed and only lasted 2 years before it grew mold and the cooler motor broke. I have been using anti bacterial liquid with every water change to avoid that but still it got mold. So I had to throw everything out.

Question: Could you cut these aspen pads down to size for portable air coolers? I just recently bought the SPT SF-609 for my house in Los Angeles, CA. It's getting pretty bad out here and I am looking to get the best value out of my cooler. The only problem is that I don't know if they sell the pads for my cooling unit.

I'm 50 years old can't believe I'm bearly learning this rite now . boy do I hate that freon never did it's job cooling down my double wide mobile home I live next palm springs California Hemet, I sure do love how you explain step by step how to place pads that cardboard filter makes a lot sense I have side window swamp cooler once temp reaches 105 plus buy bags ice and place them inside with one bag ice liquor store do it standing water in unit gets sucked in pump comes top falls in pads ext ext my unit is in car port drive way out of direct sun so bag ice should last hours .

Hey buff brown, so I live in Utah county and we used to have a cooler and it broke so we bought a new one and it came with the aspen pads it looks like but it doesn't seem to cool as well as my older one. What do you suggest?

Aspen pads take a while to swell up (about a week). You may also have thinner pads, smaller motor, smaller pump. All of these will effect your cooling.

We have a ultra cool so not sure if it is a evaporative or swamp, and the only filters we see on it are the intake of outside air. So my question is where do these filters you are talking about go

+Linda Baldwin, Great question! If you have an Ultra Cool cooler you have an evaporative cooler. It uses Celdek filter media. The media could be 8" or 12" thick depending on the make. The filters sit in the wet section of the cooler and the air passes through them to give you cooling. Google swamp cooler repair followed by the name of your city to see who specializes in evaporative coolers for maintenance and repairs. With proper maintenance the filter media should last 4 to 6 years before replacement. If you have any other question email me @ info@desertcoolerspecialist.com.

I paid $350 for a maintenance guy to come over to improve my cooler because it didn't feel cool at all. In fact it's hovering around 83 degrees. He change the belt, bought a 3/4 hp motor, got them green pads that you mentioned were 60% efficient (he claim they were the best)and now the temp is at 80 degrees. I didn't feel I got my money's worth. I'm thinking of switch to that thick pad. Do I need to change anything cause the green bad fit nicely on 3 sides. I'm assuming I only need 1 thick pad? Please help.

I've tried all the pads and imo the blue shouldn't be on the market. I also don't like the green. In my experience the bluepads 'channel' meaning the water finds paths it likes and it just follows them. The blue pads do not wick or spread the water. Another imo is the super fat aspen pads are not the best choice. I use the inexpensive thin aspen pads from Home Depot. The four cost about $12. I suspect the fat pads offer too much air resistance and air velocity is part of the evaporation process else they plug up with minerals faster then the water channels. Get yourself an IR thermometer on ebay. Measure your duct temperature coming into the house. I use weather underground to get a close by temperature/humidity reading. My duct presently measures 69.6 running on low. The local temperature/humidity is 95/19. Google evaporative cooler temperature chart and look up those numbers and what the heck 69 is what it should be. One possible reason for high temperatures coming into your house is a clogged tube. If a pad or part of a pad is dry that will draw in ambient hot air and mix it with the cooled air. You should always sit the pump in a filter basket. So if you have high temperatures that don't jive with local temps and humidity you may have a dry pad or a blue pad that's channeling. As far as motors go at some point they will stop working. I had one (25 years old) that would run hot and the overload in the motor would trip so in that case it just isn't running. I doubt you needed a new motor since you don't mention the motor cutting out.

The "high performance" evaporative media smells like wet cardboard and fills the entire house with that smell. That is what is in mine. I was hoping to replace it with synthetic just to get rid of the smell. Except, the synthetic is thin and "floppy", so I had to put the "high performance" one(s) back in. Now, it's blowing bubbles. If I put the fan speed above low, it'll suck the bubbles in and throw water everywhere. Any ideas what I screwed up?

I'm no expert, but I believe it has to do with the float setting. It may be too high and needs to reset to a slightly lower level. I hope this helps.

I'm far from an expert as well, but I *think* I may have wiped the water reservoir out with a disinfecting wipe that may have introduced a soap agent into the water. A week later it stopped doing it. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

James, Sorry for getting back to you so late. A couple of thing to check. 1 Make sure that the pads are in correctly. If you look on the side of the pads you will see two arrows pointing the direction of the air flow. They should be pointing up and to the blower. This is very importain for proper air flow and cooling. Make sure that the water distribution tube is not plug and all holes are clear. NO not enlarge the holes. Make sure that the holes are pointing up and not down on the pads. Make sure you have not installed to large of a water pump. Bigger does not produce colder air just more problems. As for the smell that should go away in 24 to 48 hours of use. Make sure that you have installed an Auto Flush system as well that will flush the tank every 8 hours of operating time. This will all so help with the smell. Proper maintenance of your system will give you years of comfort and utility savings. The system should be serviced twice a year. Mark Weidenfeller Great question. To keep the calcium build up down you must change the water in the cooler every 6 to 8 hours of operating time. The best way to do this is to install an Auto Flush system. This is a secondary pump the has an internal timer timer that will come on every 8 hours of operating time and flush the system. You can pick up this Auto Flush pump at Home Depot or Lows for around $40.00. Well worth the investment.

Mark Weidenfeller The Fresh Air Cakes are more to control the odors that can build up in the pads and do not to much to control or neutralize the calcium. You need to change the water every 8 to 10 hours to minimize the calcium build up in the water. The higher the mineral content in the water the more calcium that will build up on the pads.

could you use somethign else than water in a evaporative cooler? i know ethanol and acetone evoperate better, but are not so good for you when it is in the air. and flameable. any1 has some tips?

Bogardrippy Great question. You can install an Auto Flush system that flushes the system every 8 hours of operating time. It is a secondary pump the plugs into the primary pump and pump the water through the drain pipe. This will change the water ph and help keep the Alkaline build up to a minimum.

Great question. When you say the south how far south are you talking? Evaporative cooling works best in hot and dry climates. If you live somewhere where is hot and humid, evaporative cooling will not work as well. Thanks for checking out our KZfaq channel.

The LOWER the humidity, the BETTER a swamp cooler works. So if your summers are hot and MUGGY (high humidity), then A/C is best. But if they are hot and DRY (low humidity), then a swamp cooler can make it feel much better because 80 degree air coming in to the house feels way cooler than the 110 degree air outside. Especially at night. An A/C unit costs much more to operate. You'll see that when the power bill comes in. Something to consider...

Also consider, next winter. when it is cold and the wind is blowing, if you want to see if water can cool, pour a bucket of water over yourself and go stand out in the windy cold. Swamp coolers work on the same principal as your body sweating when it is hot. Evaporation. No, it is not as powerful as A/C, but it does take the edge off and cost very little in comparison to A/C...

David Beecroft Yes the thicker the filter media (12" filter media) the longer it takes the air to go through it the colder the air and believe it or not the dryer too. Aspen pads can not give you that comfort because of the thickness of the pad.

Buff Brown that, scientifically, makes no sense, brah... unless the water, itself, is refrigerated but even then the longer air has exposure to water the MORE likely it is to pick up moister. For example, I'm in Vegas, it's 108 today and the humidity is 6%. INSIDE the house it's 78 and the humidity is 42% because of my EV. Now, IF I used an EV in tandem with my EV (both using aspen, 12", filter media) then the air would get even cooler and even dryer! THAT is a miracle, my friend! We have found the answers to our AC problems in Vegas! Just recirculate EV air back into the EV and it will just get drier and drier and colder and colder! AC is a thing of the past! Anyway, dude, I'm not saying you're wrong to be contrary, I'm saying it because it's impossible.

Kyle Hollingshead the thing that caused the air to be cooler is the fact is went from 5% humidity to 50% humidity ... there is NOTHING that can, from that point, take out the moister ... nothing but air conditioning ... and that is not happening ... so, scientifically it does NOT make sense. it amazes me how stupid internet people are ... amazes and saddens

David Beecroft Exactly. Humidity by definition is the amount of water vapour in the air. Going from 5% to 50% humidity definitely means the air is holding more moisture, ie - is wetter, not drier. It has to absorb more moisture in order to cool. Evap cooling relies on water's large enthalpy of vaporization. That's why this tech is currently limited to applications in hot, dry climates.

People who REALLY take care of their cars, not just oil changes but frequent inspections, tire rotation, etc....automatically do the same with their home. He's right, it should be no different. I get it though. In this day and age, where vast amounts of people are struggling to pay the bills, your car is your lifeline. Without it, you may as well be homeless. Of course, who better exploits the misery of people than, MARKETING. "LOW MAINTENANCE". In your mind, you're saying, "Cool, more time for football season". Soon after, the unit DIES in the middle of summer, and you wonder to yourself, "I thought this thing was low maintenance?". You haven't checked it in 3 years! LOL!

I live in Fort Mohave which is probably one of the hottest spots on earth, and I was also based at 29 palms as a Marine. Forget the ice bottles which are a waist of time no matter which (side draft/down draft) cooler you have. The warm water will get cold VERY FAST, as you are pulling air through the pads which bring the water temperature down (this is how the swamp cooler works). My recommendations are as follows: Use ONLY aspen pads. Do maintenance on the unit at least once a week (more if you are anal like me); this should include oiling the squirrel cage bearings (oil both sides of the motor every other month), replace pads each season with high usage (over 6 months of constant use). I get away with two years use, as once the humidity comes in, the swamp cooler is useless. Use vinegar (Lime and Calcium control), and 1 inch pool chlorine tabs (Mold control) in check. You should just run the pump for a couple of hours or more when adding vinegar, the 1 or 2 chlorine tabs are slow dispense, so can be added any time. I have been running multiple swamp coolers on my property for over 20 years, so I know what I am talking about. These steps may seem like a lot of work, but like anything else, once you get into the groove, you don't even think about it.

There is more to servicing evaporative coolers than changing the pads. Also, there are few moments in this video that I disagree with. Aspen pads are cheeper and they wear off ( mostly on top of door panel) and stack up toward the bottom of the door panel, Also, twice a year service of the cooler is nice, but once is enough. Pads do not stay in water. Water stays in pan, Next, chlorine getting into cooler also means metal corrosion. Your company must use approved cleaner, not chlorox.

he is right, these pads suck balls. your house is 15* hotter becuase these pads. use the old shredded aspen wood pads. you will be 10 to 15* cooler. all these other green , blue pads suck bad.

Screw your overpriced filter media! People in africa use biochar in their evaporative coolers to refrigerate vegetables in the savanna heat. Unlike expensive aspen pads, biochar does not decompose. The surface area of a single gram of activated carbon is equivalent to several football fields... so it won't clog as quickly and it has more surface area to exchange the humidity faster.. making it cooler. I'm building my own evaporative cooler for a 420 square foot greenhouse on the highplains, where humidity is usually 15% on average. I don't want to buy expensive filter media every year when I can just make my own, superior media for absolutely FREE. Spread the word.

All timber swells.... cardboard goes soggy..... Number 1 if aspen pads swell, like any other timber which makes it less affichant...... Number 2, cardboard goes soggy which there for goes mouldy, and doesn't work/ needs to be replaced more....... Synthetic is the way to go, energy affichant and replacing time to price is a lot more economical

Evaporative coolers are useless at 95 degrees F and above or 50% humidity and above.

Hey Ryan you are right on the 50% humidity they don't work well. Depending on what type of cooler you have (swamp cooler or evaporative cooler) you can use evaporative coolers in temperatures as high as 108 to 112 with 5 to 10% humidity. agreed: with Buff Brown. its 115 in Tucson AZ sometimes and its amazing as long as the humidity is %10-20 humidity. %30 humidity still works ok but at that time, kick on your ac.

Ryan Toomey I never run my evaporative cooler here in Texas in my shop when the humidity is above 50%. The old fashioned window swamp coolers are better than the portable coolers like portacool. Portacool causes too much humidity and will rust everything in a shop. Not so with the swamp coolers. I’ve boiled it down to the fact that the squirrel cage fan in the swamp cooler has more cfm than the propeller type fan blades like on the portacool. I had 2 portacools and will never have another one. I have a old fashioned swamp cooler that cools my shop a lot better and with less humidity than the portacool.

LONG ASS COMERCIAL ALERT I watched this whole damn video for 6 minutes and didn't get one tip on what I should do to maintain my swamp cooler besides paying for some shmuck to come out and over charge me.
