Evaporative vs. Ice Cooling Vests for Multiple Sclerosis

8 жыл бұрынThis is an overview of two different styles of cooling vest. The first I show you uses water evaporation to cool, while the second is filled with 9 ice packs. Both have pluses and minuses involving looks, weight, and versatility in dry and moist climates. I made this video to help out other people like me, who have MS and want to get a cooling vest.

I go off roading , last month went to the Mojave Desert for 4 days , was a crazy 112 degrees solid no kidding. I heard about these from a Marine that was over seas in hot desert environments , He was telling me about cooling vest they used over there, So I went on KZfaq and did the research found 4 types . The best for my low tech needs was the evaporative vests. Purchased one on Amazon for $38.00 HypertechI wore an under armor shirt underneath worked perfect. The real test was 112 degrees and got stuck in sand had to dig tires out, took an hour, I wet the vest twice and also used a kid of dew rag from home depot made by Mission . Now not kidding I never dropped one drop of sweat and was cool the entire time. The vest also worked great while driving the Rig due to air flow for 38.00 Best purchase ever.

@@metaspencer Have a doctor ever estimated how long someone has heat intolerance? What caused yours if you don't mind me asking and what are your doctor's thoughts. I went to a doctor and to an ER and they don't know what I'm talking about.

Got diagnosed last month. Went for a walk today and got the tingles all over my body, especially when I look down. Definitely going to try a vest. Thanks for looking out for us.

That looking down tingle thing is called Lhermitte's sign, in case you didn't know: a common thing for folks with MS and it often goes away when I cool off and relax. Stay cool out there! I also have this video on cooling strategies: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gMpplbaavpyqaJc.html

When I first got my heart transplant I had a hard time with hot temperatures. My cardiologist recommended trying a cooling vest. I purchased the evaporative type. Georgia summers are in the 90s and 100 degree temps. I used it in the hot sun at an outdoor gun range and other than the weird looks for having a vest on in the sun, it worked well. The humidity was high but it still worked.

These vests are so expensive when they don't have to be. The materials are not high cost. It takes the product out of the market for a lot of people!

Yeah, I completely agree. You can get a lot of cooling from a towel soaked in water ... and the best thing I've used is a bottle of water 1/2 filled, frozen, and then filled with water and taken out with me in the heat of the day. Drinking cold fluids does a lot, as does shade.

And I should say that I've seen some people make their own DIY ice vest, so that's a cheaper option

Soak cheap sponges in water, seal them in small zip plastic bags and freeze. Use scrap material from old clothes to see pockets on an old tshirt. Fill the pockets with the homemade ice packs. 🙂💥

It's 35$ on Amazon. It would cost me 20 Xs that to make my own evaporative cooling vest and I'd never be able to make my own refrigeration vest.

Thanks for the cool video, I am a pipeline welder in South Texas and I have had kidney failure twice from being in the extreme heat and dehydration, I’ve tried a lot of products like you,Only thing I would tell you to add is what I learned, I drink 1 to 2 coconut waters every single day I’m in the heat because my potassium was so low that’s why I had the kidney failure and the coconut waters , a fan , and umbrella is only thing I would tell you to suggest as I learned from experience, I drink 1 to 2 coconut waters every single day I’m in the heat because my potassium was so low that’s why I had the kidney failure and the coconut waters ( vita-coco -940 MGs of potassium per bottle ) coconut water , Water ,umbrellas , and a fan are the only things that keep me going honestly, thanks again for the cool video

I still use the evaporative vest quite a lot in the summer ... it's my favorite cooling tool, right along with an ice-cold bottle of water!

I'm living in Thailand :( its averaging 34℃ 36℃ ++ most days unless it rains. I would need to go for the cooler vest because of the high humidity. feel like a gold fish in Air con rooms

Great vid man. Good info. Have you seen the Compcooler? Works on a pump actually cycling cold water from a bladder on the back. Kinda costly but Adam Savage recommended! Lol I got one but haven't tried it yet. Waiting for the rain to dry off. Just thought I'd share!

@@Ian-os7kp Good deal. I have the best luck on hot days precooling with ice water and even a cold shower, then avoiding the sun as much as possible and drinking cold water out there. Stay cool!

what does they use in evaporative vest? is there any chemical inside the fabric like the ice pack one? Or it just produced as an evaporative fabric so we can buy the fabric through the market?

I don’t think the best relies on chemistry so much as water absorbent fabric like a diaper

i would think I'd want to wear it under my shirt. I'm very active in the heart and i wear compression shirts. my body makes the water and the shirt holds the water right on my body, then the material allows air to penetrate the shirt. feels like heaven.

Yes, I've tried that. Wearing the evaporative cooling vest against the skin is pretty good.

Do the evaporative vests have salt buildup from continuos usage ? I just checked on some websites and they have something called as a cycle time after which it loses its capacity. Did you face this ? Is there any chance of skin infections or fungus and algae growth inside the evaporative vests.

I don't know how you'd get salt build up since you're always rinsing it out after each use to get it wet again. So no, I haven't seen this problem after many summers of use. You definitely will get mold and a funky smell if you don't dry them out fully between use, just like a wet towel.

In 120 degree weather, which one do you think would be more effective?I feel very doubtful about buying the evaporative vest as I have a hard time believing it will last me a good amount of time in a very hot and very dry climate. Do you have an estimate on how long the ice vest would last in extreme 120f weather? Thanks!

You're absolutely right about humidity and evaporation ... in your ultra-hot climate pre-cooling is super valuable, as well as shade and drinking ice water when out there. Ice vests can last 20-30 minutes in very hot weather, but I don't like how they make me feel hot because of the thickness. Stay cool!

You might be able to find a cheaper knock-off version ... I've found ice water and pre-cooling to work best for me

Very helpful. I tour the country as a busking/street performing clown and I've been looking for away to keep cool in my clown outfits in sometimes what feels as unbearable heat.

Ron George I wouldn't run in the ice vest. it would chafe and be hot ... it actually insulates

So, I have a question about the evaporating vest. Last summer we visited an amusement park on a dry intense hot day. I had an ice cold towel around my neck, drank water, and kept soaking the towel in bathrooms to keep it cool. My shirt was drenched. However, I almost got heat stroke and ended up having the park EMTs and nurse do an emergency by applying packs of ice under and around my body. Since that event happened, I need to find a cooling system that will keep me cool for a longer duration 6 hours plus. Would you recommend the evaporating vest for someone with my extreme sensitivity to the heat? And if so, would I still get benefits if wearing one over a thin t-shirt? Thanks.

Hiya! Yes, I'd say that the evaporative vest is a good bet for you. The nice thing about it is that it covers a lot of surface area, thus cooling your entire torso ... that's more than a towel. With that said, you need to use it in dry climates for max benefit. I recently posted this video, which focuses on the three main ways I stay cool. SpencersBackChannel Oh, hey! Thanks for your quick response. So, I would be wearing this in dry Idaho heat and in dry August heat in SoCal. I read one reviewer on Amazon say that it only lasted 1-2 hours before it dried and they urged folks to constantly wet the vest for it to work. Another reviewer stated that the seams around the quilts came undone. I would be packing this vest to on flights. Would it be best to carry it on the plane with me? And, have you noticed the vest drying time is so quick (1-2 hours) or that the seams come loose?

The drying time depends on the heat (how hot it is) and the humidity. So yes, having it still damp after an hour is nice, but it's often dry in that amount of time. So re-wetting it is nice ... especially if you can do so with very cold water, as that ads to they cooling. Note that there are three kinds of vests: evaporative, ice, and circulating coolant. The third category is reputed to be the best, though I only have evap and ice vests.

metaspencer Good to know. I will remember that. The higher end (third) vest you mentioned is the most expensive. I figure at an amusement park the evaporating vest would work best as I can wet it easily in a bathroom when needed. I did it with a hotel hand towel so I can wet it with a vest. LOL. I wonder if folks dunk the vest in an ice cooler? Have you ever froze the vest the night before and then put it in cold water the following morning?

What would you recommend for inside until we're able to purchase a vest? I tried frozen vegetables, chicken and a towel wrapped in ice. My head feels like it's on fire at night time. Are you able to blow dry your hair?

I got the second one. You are correct, it’s ugly. I’m making one out of old T-shirt’s. I’ve got the measurements of ice packs sew a line of fabric for pockets.. add ice packs. Not ugly

Having used the ice vest in all kinds of high temps this summer, the answer is the old "it depends." In 90-100 degree heat, I find the packs get softened up within 20-30 minutes and are pretty much warm after an hour (on average).
