In this video I want to tell you about the life of Evelyn Sharp, an adopted, asthmatic girl, who grew up in the midst of the Great Depression in the Nebraska Sandhills. Despite humble beginnings, Evelyn was determined to fly and became one of the finest pilots in the nation. She soloed at the age of sixteen and became the youngest female commercial pilot at 18, and a flight instructor at the age of twenty. During World War II, she qualified as the seventeenth member of the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron, flying nearly every airplane in the Army Air Forces inventory.
Unfortunately, she lost her life in a P-38 forced landing during a delivery in 1944. Evelyn Sharp's legacy was nearly lost to history, if it wasn't for the incredible determination of author Diane Bartels, and her tireless work in compiling Evelyn's biography: Sharpie: The Life Story of Evelyn Sharp. (Kind of hard to find book, but available here: www.coatmyplane.com/aviana-st... )
I came across Diane's work and determined to use my Luscombe to help tell Evelyn's story and help spread her inspiring legacy.
