Talk Overview:
Witkin provides a historical perspective on how working at Cold Spring Harbor (CSH) shaped her scientific career and led to the discovery of the SOS DNA damage response in bacteria. At CSH she worked with the pioneers of bacterial genetics, at a time when there was a major discovery every other week. As a PhD student Witkin observed that some bacteria were able to survive high doses of UV radiation. She speculated that these bacteria may have a mechanism to repair DNA making them UV resistant. These revolutionary ideas gave birth to the discovery that cells have a mechanism to repair DNA damage, the SOS response.
Speaker Biography:
Evelyn Witkin earned her BA in zoology from NYU in 1941 and started her graduate studies at Columbia University where she joined Dr. Theodosius Dobzhansky’s laboratory. She was interested in studying Drosophila genetics, but her interests changed when she realized that bacteria also have genes. She went to CSH in the summer of 1944 to start her studies in bacterial genetics, a decision that shaped her scientific career. At CSH she isolated, for the first-time, UV-resistant E. Coli. After graduating in 1947, she continued her studies in bacterial genetics. In 1971, she joined the Biology Sciences department at Rutgers University and continued working on DNA mutagenesis in E. Coli. In the early 1970’s, in collaboration with Dr. Miroslav Radman, she discovered the SOS response to UV irradiation in bacteria.
For her work on mutagenesis and DNA repair, Witkin was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1977. She was awarded the U.S. National Medal of Science in 2002, and the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award in 2015.

So inspiring! I was really surprised to find out that scientists used to think bacteria didn't have genes though haha

I'm not sure how widespread that idea was, or whether microbiologists were lagging that far behind other "-ologists" like Drosophila geneticists. Gene work was conceptualized in Drosophila and the fact DNA rather than protein was the genetic material was actually figured out using bacteria and phage. Griffiths early work (pre WWII) showed that something could transfer pathogenicity from heat killed virulent strep to living non virulent strains, so I'm not really sure what she meant by that comment.

Why hasn't Dr. Witkins been presented with the Nobel Prize for Physiology/Medicine? It's purpose is for the discoveries in physiology or medicine that lead to benefit for humankind. Why isn't President Brachi advancing her nomination? The 2019 award was given to researchers "for their discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability." That's nice BUT better than what Witkins has accomplished?
