I needed to work out which names went to three of the Chinese topmen. Used the socks for one but the others' shoes all looked the same on my screen. However, there's another detail with their hammocks: The larger man's hammock hangs lower and has more bulk in it.

It's been a while since I played, but I think I partially deduced Lewis Walker's identity by the fact he was a topman, therefore more likely to pull off an acrobatic stunt like jumping to the deck below to reach the captains quarters

I'm late to the party, having only just played the game, but I noticed you made no mention of scoping out things in people's rooms. The Bosun's whistle is hanging up in his room; The Steward's room has a spare Steward's uniform hanging on the wall so you can recognize what that uniform means, etc. Another couple of details that don't actually help with identifying people, but which I really appreciate are that: the hands on the pocket watch indicate where/when it is taking you. The hour hand is the chapter and the minute hand is the part, so when holding the watch over the first Mate's body, the watch reads 10:05 because the big hand and little hand are representing Chapter 10, part 1. Lastly the annoying ghost trail which leads you to corpses tends to follow the path of the body itself. So in Peter Milroy's case, it first goes up high, over the side of the ship and then lands down on the deck, mirroring how he was in the Kraken's grip when the powder exploded and then hurled onto the deck. Nothing in the game is an accident and it's all wonderful.

The only Irish dude in the crew is the only one depicted with a beer. Also a fun fact - Bosuns using whistles is the reason why there is a sailor superstition against whistling on board - it could lead to a dangerous misunderstanding. This is also a reason why there is a theatre superstistion against whistling backstage - theatres often hired sailors to operate the ropes that moved the scenery.

Only thing I don't think I heard you mention is that the Bosun's whistle is actually hanging in his room on the present day ship. That's the connection for the memory. Don't think you need to know that's a whistle. (For the longest time I thought it was a pipe that he hung around his neck, until I read a wiki)

I found out the Bosun identify because he curses in german in the frenchman scene, and he is one of two austrians on the ship, he and the gunner, so he had to be one of those.

One thing I can't believe wasn't mentioned: In Murder 2, you can spot the cook and butcher standing next to a goat cage, with the butcher wearing an apron and holding a carving fork. Also, Edward Spratt, the artist, can bee seen drawing "Justice at Sea" (Spratt can also be seen in several scenes being pushed away by crew as he tries to draw some of the more disturbing scenes). I always thought it was a stretch to be able to identify him in Doom 1, but this provides the clues you need. So many identities can be guessed in Murder 2 by just where people are standing, including officers, their stewards, midshipmen, and more.

One general clue is simply to pay attention to the clothes and conclude what could be the person's job from there. I never realized the Purser hid in the Purser Office (and, really, anyone could hide there!), but he was way too well dressed to be a seamen or topmen, so he had to be an official. After I identified every other official he was left by process of elimination.

I just watched a playthrough where somebody had trouble seeing that It Beng Sia used a knife in The Calling part 3 (they thought it looked like a strangling). However, if one goes to part 2, then the knife can be seen on the boat.

I could have taken an hour or two off of this game if I had known that the hammocks went down after their owner died.

Just a quick note on alexander booth you can also figure out him because the hammock labeled 57 is empty in Edwards death meaning any hammocks empty in that scene where the people on the rowboat making the other man thats not the purser Alexander booth

Here's one BAD clue: when the crab riders attack the ship, you hear someone say "the enemy" is on board. This lead me to mark people speared as speared by a foreign enemy. Turns out the crab riders count as beasts instead.

I don't think it was mentioned. But in the Soliders of the sea 1 when a Chinese topman is struck by lightning you can see every living topman working on top of the sails. From there you can easily deduce which topman is which. The only Russian obviously Leonid. The turban wearing one is Persian. Tatooed one is from New Guinea. And If you already know that it was the Scottish topman that died in murder 3 then out of the 2 remaining British/non Chinese topmen Nick is the one that gets killed immediately after and gets called out by name leaving the only remaining white topman to be Lewis Walker. After this you are left only with the Chinese topmen which all most easily can be told apart by their shoes and the numbers on their beds.

Want a sneaky way to eliminate a *huge* number of people from being the Bosun's Mate? He can't be any of the sleepers highlighted as present in the gun-deck hammocks, as he wouldn't be snoozing in one of those: he has a cabin next to his boss's.

Also, Wei Lee and Li Hong *don't* have unique shoes. Only the other two Chinese topmen do. You can identify Wei when he's dining with Shirley, as in the video, leaving Li Hong as the only one remaining.

The purser can be deduced with a fair degree of certainty just through the fact that hes clutching those large books as he waits on the ships boat in the Doom. As for the striped shirt. Being that the uniforms would not initially have been centrally distributed, and would have to be acquired independently from private sources, you can be sure French nautical types had been wearing similar shirts for a long time before it was adopted as uniform. Particularly if they were from Brittany; from whence the term BRETON shirt comes from. And yeah, you did butcher it, to an inconceivable degree - you should probably have your likeness carved on Mt Rushmore for such a stirring display of Murrica.

Another little secret is when Henry evans and the other 3 people escape if you look near Henry evans you can see Henry with the box which contained the memento moretem and the book next to him on the boat

During Soldiers of the Sea pt.1, you can hear a loud voice with a French accent over the wind. The bosun's mate was there during that scene. In the next scene, you're on ground level, and you can get a close-up of everyone. Spotting the mate will still be tricky, but maybe easier

5:09 that actually really would have helped me if I noticed! In the bosun’s room you can see that whistle hung up on the wall and I had no idea what it was, I would have figured it out if I noticed he wears it

I don't know how no one have seen this BIG clue for 2nd mate steward, here's the point: Edward Nichols did take with him some seamen,topmen AND 1 STEWARD, isn't that obvious that this one steward is Edward Nichols's steward? Because stewards can't leave their mates, so other stewards wouldn't be able to go with Nichols,BUT Nichols's mate will go with him in any damn situation, isn't that SO OBVIOUS?

I saw a comment on a different video that said that Hamadou was actually very tall, and weighted his hammock by a lot. Seen on bitter cold part 1. He is also seen with like something he wears on his ears.

Leonid is also easy to identify as the only Russian topman, therefore in the electrocution scene where all the topmen are in the rigging all you have to do is find the russian guy.

A clue that got me the Peters brothers was: In the ”under way” sketch we can see nathan peters (presumably) telling samuel peters something and pointing to another players hand, presumably telling what cards he has.

Oh and I identified the ship's Steward as I noticed he'd be standing back and supervising a lot. Like when they take the mermaid down the stairs, it looks like he's overseeing it all, seems like a job fit for the ship's steward

I guessed all the hat wearers and mates right by thinking "if I had this job what kind of hat would I wear"

I remember going back and forth A LOT between the memories of Syed and the artist, because there you can also use process of elimination: the memory tells you how many people are around and so, by counting all the previous crewmembers already identified + which hammocks are occupied or not between each scene. AND ALSO another technique is using game logic (lol): If I already knew 100% the name and fate of a crewmember (which by the end it got more and more difficult for me) I'd leave it as 'Unkown' and the when trying to brute force a couple of names THEN I'd would put the correct info so that the game would check for me the corrects names that I was randomly swapping

It's funny that, while I see what you're saying with these clues now, I didn't catch any of them but one and found other ways to ID the crewmembers. Admittedly, I think I brute-forced the Peters brothers, but I figured out who George Shirley was by noting that his hammock was next to all the Chinese topmen, so I assumed he was friends with them, spoke their language, or whatever. Then in the sketch, I saw an unknown seaman who looked like a white guy, but had a stereotypical Chinese haircut. This was late game, so I didn't have too many crew left to ID, so when I saw that 59 was still left open, I deduced that could be him, and was right.

Seems to have it all though one thing about continuity i noticed was during soldiers of the sea you can see the bosun be handed a blunderbuss by the gunner that he later gives to the carpenter (who has a bandage for his wound from earlier) after seeing the first crab rider dead this is the same one the carpenter uses to kill the second crab rider in the final chapter of soldiers of the sea, and if you look closely you can see that he had potentially manually triggered the release of the hammer after the trigger failed which would explain how he got pushed down the stairs while still facing the crab rider

The strange thing about the logic for Lewis Walker is that it seems the game doesn't even recognize that you can determine who he is when you first find that hammock despite having all the information needed to do so. It seems like the intended way to figure out his identity was actually the process of elimination you talked about in your first video, not to use the hammock to determine his identity, which seems like a missed opportunity. The easiest way to determine Charles Miner's identity was to pay attention to the Alfred Klestil's quote when he died. He asks "Where is my Frenchman?" This means that regardless of whoever Klestil's position is, his assistant is French, and Charles Miner is the only Frenchman on the ship. If you know Klestil is the bosun, then Miner must be the bosun's mate.

Not late at all but a simpler way to deduce the top man/sea men is to look at the pictures. They’re all sitting together at the back

Also during Soldiers of the Sea Pt 2 you see all the Seamen on the deck when the crab men attack. While Soldiers of the Sea Pt 1 you can see all the top men on the rigging.

Also in the present day in the bosuns room you can find the same exact whistle hanging on the wall

Okay, just commented on your previous video and mentioned my astute hearing regarding accents. You acknowledged it all and destroyed my comment potential and invigorated my spirit!. Accents (mainly UK) were a big part of RotOD for me. I just want to give a big thanks. From a person who used the wike (only to find the next chapter) to someone who noticed tattoos and wedding rings. I just thought she was a miss because she looked younger! I was right, so it fits. Im late to this video but one way to identify the purser is during the escape, hes holding all of his ledgers with him. we know hes not wearing the uniform of a mate or is the captain and is one of the few remaining members who would keep big bound ledgers important enough to take with him

Lewis can be seen in Soldiers of the Sea in the rigging, since he is the only non asian and non russian it has to be him.

Three is another clue in chapter 6 part 1: you can hear a man shouting commands, and when you look down on the deck you can see one man not pulling rope together with others.That suggest he has higher rank and the fact that he oversees work directly would make him bosun or bosun's mate . In chapter 6 part 2 you can take closer look on him to now who he is.

I was confused by the Peters brothers too, especially because it notes "a stowaway" but then the dead Peters brother is also listed on the manifest?

I figured sailors worked in shifts and while some were working, others were sleeping and they shared the bunks (so no personal numbered bunks),

The American accents do help but the modern accents are off putting when you realize America was literally born 20-ish years before the game starts
