Yay, you got my suggestion! :D The C64 was pretty bad at racing conversions too, Chase HQ and WEC Le Mans being particularly bad. Also, Gamevoy Advance, their ports of Marble Madness and Klax were literally cut in half as they were only given 5 weeks to develop them.

Wasn't aware of the low development time for the Game Boy titles. The 64 had some decent racing games but yes as noted Chase HQ is awful

I LOVED the C64 port of Contra as a teen! To get around the spacebar thing, I played with the C64 on the ground while I sat on the couch, and used my toe to tap the spacebar. ;-) Some next-level thinking there. I played a bunch of games that used the spacebar for a secondary function this way. Commando comes to mind. Love that Rob Hubbard version of the theme!

That's how I played Green Beret. A friend of mine then came up with a creative idea. He built a simple pedal mechanism that is connected to the fire pin on joystick port 1, which is same as pressing space. It was mostly cardboard so it didn't last very long.

I know that the topic of this vid is "Worst Arcade Conversions Ever, but when QC mentioned Contra, I thoroughly enjoyed the NES version. But I recommend the Famicom version even more. The Famicom version actually has cut scenes and a map showing where you are.

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I heard you say the NES version was good, and I will agree. But when I played the Famicom version when I found a translated ROM, I discovered Konami cut a ton of things when it was localized for us here in the USA. Not only what I said previously, but a lot of the animation is different. A prime example is on Stage 5 "Snowfield," the Famicom version has snow falling. Check out the NES Contra page at The Cutting Room Floor and they break down all of the differences. Therefore, if I get the urge to play Contra, I will either play it on MAME or the Famicom version.

The Famicom version may have had a chip that only worked on the Famicom. I know later Konami titles had chips that used the same pins as FDS that were moved to the bottom of the NES.

Considering that they were porting games from vastly superior hardware to platforms like the C64, these conversions are actually impressive in their own right. The majority of the ports shown here are going from Arcade Games that use 68000 or better CPU's to a 6502/Z80 platforms that didn't have dedicated hardware for things like scrolling. Arcade games also used multiple CPU's, better dedicated audio hardware (i.e. CPU and ROM just to run the sound). These 8Bit conversions are pushing the limits of their hardware a lot of the times. Yes, they could be better but when you've got a dead-line quality suffers.

Honestly, you can't complain about the C64 port of Chase HQ, before you've tried Cisco Heat :D Also, while the framerate is quite ok, they managed to create very nice sense of lack of speed in the C64 port of Enduro Racer. Also, is the C64 version of Robocop supposed to be based on the arcade version? At least they are very similar. Yes, it's very far from the worst arcade conversions, but there's an interesting detail, that could make it "honorary mention", if nothing else: The developers were in a hurry, having to get the game finished for christmas season (Where have I heard this one before?), but the last level just wasn't working properly at all. Their solution? Make the time limit for the second last level so tight, it's impossible to complete!

The Commodore 64 was my first go to 8 bit gaming system as well growing up. My parents purchased one in '83 and I loved the great games on it! Crazy thing is I still have that same computer and it still works to this day! I didn't realize that Karnov and Outrun were so terrible on the Commodore 64. I know Afterburner wasn't too bad of a port. lol And yes please continue with this series.

Worth noting there was 2 conversions of outrun for the c64 (I only discovered this recently, not sure why they did a second version, it was licensing or to try and address playability in the first one). Amstrad version of gryzor was good but flip screen. For these really slow fps games like stun runner, hard driving, outrun etc there might be a good video in playing these in overclocked emulation, particularly for the atari st where 3d stuff was generally handled better from a hardware perspective.

Bland colours on the C64 are what they are. A more legit complaint is maybe a poor choice of bland colour usage. Paperboy is pretty decent for the C64. Outrun is not as nice looking as it could have been. Turbo Outrun for the C64 is an improvement.

no port on any arcade game is 100% perfect you cant beat the arcade version but because of emulation wich is brilliant. now we can criticize how games where back in the day but that is what we had to be content with. even if some machines only had1 fire button. the spectrum tried its best, great video pmqc😁😁😁

Gryzor on the Amstrad CPC was actually pretty good (if memory serves me) and it was ported by the legendary John Brandwood, who also did Renegade. The games you did present are as it says on the box, pretty painful to even watch you play 😅

The Apple IIGS did not have a true 16-bit computer. The 65816 CPU is an 8/16 bit processor. Also regarding the Commodore Plus/4 game, it's actually a Commodore C16 game, so it's a 16K game, not a 64K game, so would also be limited by that fact.

I like these videos. It makes me feel slightly blessed I never had to deal with so many dogshit ports of those games haha. I mean, I crap on the NES for not living up to the arcades (but knowing they couldn't so I wasn't really that mad of course lol) but WOW most of those ports are embarrassing. I also love knowing the reasons why they were so bad. I have so much more sympathy for them knowing they didn't have a choice in the matter. I can understand not many of them getting back to you but it's fun when they do and knowing the behind-the-scenes reasons for what happened!

Rastan for C64! I remember trying and trying to beat it. In my opinion the graphics and music were great, but the gameplay was a mess. I remember beating a few levels, but I don’t recall how far I got. It was always cause for celebration getting past the first level. Very frustrating.

Just looked up a long play. I just realized I considered inside and outside to be separate levels when then are not. I definitely beat level 1. I definitely never got to the level 2 boss. I think I got to the level 2 castle. Anyway, I’m going to go back to the long play to see what I never got to.

Wow, the Amstrad version of Rastan must have made kids wonder if something had gone wrong with their system. I wonder if some people took the Rastan cart out and put in a better game they already had to see if the sound was still terrible. :) The BBC Micro version of Paperboy is unbelievable. Worse than early Gameboy games. Some of these arcade ports are so terrible that they sent us back to the arcade. People who were worried that home consoles would kill the arcades didn't have to worry at first because the ports were so terrible that we preferred to go back to the arcade. Any game more complex than Asteroids, Space Invaders or games like that didn't get a port that really rivaled the arcade cabinets until the NES days, though not every NES or even SNES or Genesis port was really worth getting. It was a minefield of quality or the lack thereof. Entertaining video with some versions that even I haven't seen before, or in a very long time.
