Wondering why you added the (outside to outside) measurement only to subtract it out. Why not just start with the inside measurement of 88” ?

Omggggg finally a video that broke it down and I understood it applied it and it workeddddddd

I'm putting railing on a deck. Thanks for the clear explanation.

You saved me. Thanks. I don’t understand added that imaginary ballust but it worked. Thanks again.

On a ruler (or tape measure), in between one inch is fifteen marks but we count either the first line or the last line because an inch is divided into 16ths. (16/16 = 1). So, the railing is a space then a baluster; a space then baluster etc. The baluster is like the line on the ruler, you have to add one to complete the pattern, a space plus …. a baluster.

Thank-you! This is the best video I've come across on KZfaq for reliably solving this problem. Do you have a math background?

I do the same and I do framing and trim for living. Did just last a few days it. Only do not see reason for step 7 and 8. I just use 5 5/8 at bord and 11 1/4 and so. To mark farther edge of baluster.

Súper handy and efficient video thanks. Except for a few steps they are not really necessary to calculate the space

but after adding ((3.875+1.75) x 15)+3.875 = 88.25 inch, which is longer than 88inch. How can we solve this?

But stair layout is another step to account for the angle isn't it?

Why on earth calculate the width of your newel posts ? It doesn’t matter what they are as it’s the measurement BETWEEN the insides of both newel posts. I have just watched far simpler and easier methods, perhaps you should leave it to the others , no offence
@zell8632 жыл бұрын
His method is right. It is how I do it and just did this past week. Yes, newels need not but his imaginary baluster is way to go. I do the same and tried all other ways and this is best.

I believe that this does not actually translate to even spaces. I appreciate the clarity in the math but it does not work. Vancouver carpenter channel shows another way which is spot on.

This way work and I use it in my carpentry job.

No this way is spot on. You and Vancouver carpenter should not ran from math clasess.
