After the success of Mortal Kombat, Paul W. S. Anderson was looking to move away from the PG-13 style type movie that made him famous and explore a much darker side of humanity for his next project, and so he looked to the stars. Space, according to some, it's the final frontier. But in 1997, Paul W.S. Anderson unleashed a horror film that showed that Hell was a real place that could be accessed by mankind. But with primal curiosity and the need for exploration, should it be? After production issues, a rushed schedule, and lost footage, Anderson himself seemed to have entered his own nightmare. So, let's dig into Event Horizon and find out What The F*ck Happened To This Horror Movie?
Watch or Own EVENT HORIZON here! amzn.to/3kp4DTb
SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

The directors cut would have been one of the best horror movies ever made
@kramalerav

Maybe. But that goes for a lot of other horror films too. In George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, an ending was to be filmed where the two surviving main characters off themselves at the last minute; one by gunshot and the other by rotor blade with the credits rolling as the helicopter engine winds down. Reading the shooting script, that might sound very cool. On a final cut, maybe not. Who knows. Nonetheless, footage must flow with the overall film. A movie as a whole should be greater the sum of its parts. Less can be more in the right hands.

First time I saw this movie about 2 years ago, something felt like it was incomplete. I had no idea it was cut and after seeing your video, i just cannot explain my current frustration. Lovecraftian sci-fi is such an amazing yet rare and difficult genre to make. This one had te potentiel to be its pinnacle. I hope so much they'll be able to find the footage or make a prequel using practical effects!

A prequel would be an awesome idea. We could have a movie solely about the hell the ship went to and the crew experienced. Especially being made today they could get away with so much more that back in 97 they just couldn't do and have an R rating and people now have been exposed to more body horror/ torture porn. Here's hoping that someone makes a prequel that stands up to the original someday soon

Apparently, according to an interview from Anderson, the lost footage of the film was eventually found in 2012 in an abandoned Transylvanian salt mine (kind of fitting, certainly). Unfortunately, although salt mines are sometimes used for archival storage due to the very dry air they contain (the salt absorbs any moisture), the quality of the found material was so bad it prevents it from ever getting a proper, cleaned-up Blu Ray.

Event Horizon & sphere were the 2 sci-fi movies that really got me into the sci-fi genre. I absolutely love this movie and it scared the hell out of me, but I couldnt stop watching it over and over. The cast is great, the sets are still fantastic & full of style. It felt like the inside of a spaceship, but also somehow felt like they were trapped underground & everything felt claustrophobic. If only the Directors cut footage existed, such a tragedy.

"Where we are going, we don't need eyes!" LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this movie!!! According to IMDB, all of the cut footage that is needed to do a proper directors cut was stored improperly at some underground facility overseas and as a result, it has either turned to liquid or evaporated. I have pre-ordered the Blu Ray from Scream Factory and it's true, the release date has been pushed back multiple times (it was supposed to be released last summer), both due to Covid and holding out hope that some copy of the cut footage will be found. Also, Anderson originally wanted the EDM group Orbital to compose the music for the film because he is a huge fan of the John Carpenter-like synth scores.

I loved this film as a kid, and still love it now. It is just unbearably creepy and disgusting. I worry that younger peeps will see this and think it’s a cheap rip off of something more recent when it is quite the opposite. It was quite original at the time. Huge inspiration for Dead Space for example. If you haven’t already seen it, please give it a shot. I strongly believe that this film is one of very few that inspired the modern space horror genre for movies and especially survival horror games. Please remember: if anything seems cheesy or cringe, it’s because so many damn films copied Event Horizon and you have seen the trick before.

It sounds like they found the footage stored in some kind of mine in Transylvania, but was completely destroyed by the humidity and salt. Scream Factory had this release post-poned for almost a whole year. People preordered it months and months ago and only now do they have a release date of March of 2021. Shout Factory stated they tried their best to find the lost director's cut footage and talked to all kinds of people and those part of the production team. Despite their efforts, they unfortunately were never able to find this infamously missing footage. It's basically, as far as anyone can see, the final nail in the coffin of any hope of a director's cut being released. Pretty sad, but at the very least they were able to get a ton of extras for the release.

I always thought it was overrated. People always talk about how great it is and it tops alot of horror lists but I always thought it was somewhere between above average to good. A director's cut might be better but I never got why this is considered why it's considered one of the best. To me its kind of like those Oscar bait movies: it appears near the top of peoples horror lists and its fauned over by critics while the average Joe finding it merely OK. Not bad, but not great and a little too into naval gazing. A director's cut would probably improve it and if they'd been given more time and less executive meddling would seriously improve it though

The movie still holds up. The production design is stellar. Not sure how much Clive Barker (who was consultant during pre-production of the movie) influenced the production designer and his crew but i'm pretty sure his voice was heard when it comes to vision of "chaos dimension", his victims and Sam Neil hellish makeup. Also love how Anderson changed the script and get rid of whole alien thing. He came up with something really original. The casting is also really good and each of the actors and actresses gave memorable performance, even if some of their back stories seems to end up being cut. The script is also good, even if looses some steam once we are approaching the final. Sadly, the lost footage seems to be forever destroyed. With right editing it might made the movie better, who knows. Still hope they will actually find it one day, well-preserved and make a director's cut out of it. Or mini tv series. Or maybe just give as a sequel or prequel. Or at least tv series that expand the "chaos dimension" idea. With Sam Neil as guest star. C'mon Hollywood ! 7/10

dude Sam Neill at the end gave me nightmares as a kid. Another one that creeped me tf out was the Sphere, had a black box in the 90s(free ppv) i vivdly remember watching both. Worst nightmares i ever had were from Bad Moon, that movie scared me so bad i named my first dog Thor lmao.

Would be nice if they did a Justice League move, and went back and re-filmed all those lost scenes. One can dream. 😂

according to interviews they say that whoever was incharge of storing the reels did so in an abandoned salt mine which destroyed the footage.

Everything about how they set this movie up is amazing!!! They were gone for 7 years, 7 being considered a holy number and In astrology, Neptune is considered a planet of inspiration, dreams, psychic receptivity, illusion, and confusion. Neptune rules spirituality, and all things subtle. The more negative manifestations of Neptune include deception, trickery, deceit, guilt, and addiction. Both are IMO perfectly chosen for this movie. It just can’t be a coincidence!

What this proves is that how dangerous the working environment can be when you rush through the production, many safety regulations have to be overlooked to meet the schedule, and that probably the same for losing original films. 4 weeks to finish a feature film’s entire postproduction geeee

Cult classic today. I enjoyed the movie. And to this day the Event Horizon spacecraft is still the fastest spaceship in the history of movies. It can take you instantly to anywhere in the universe.
