This RC Helicopter brings back so many memories, as I'm sure it does with many of you watching! I'd say, those of us that are in the hobby and love our drones and planes, or even our ground vehicle crew, have at the very least seen one of these helicopters. We are afraid that this sort of RC, being as basic as it is, can do more damage for the hobby now than it can help it. Though this is simple in concept and design compared to other things on the market, it's really rather difficult to keep in the air! Don't get us wrong, these do have a time and a place. ... or is it more so they "used to". Let us know what you think in the comments section! We can't wait to hear from you!
Also, if you would like to meet with us, we'll be taking selfies, signing planes, and just hanging out on August 26th at the AMA field in Muncy, IN from 12:00 to 4:00! Anyone is welcome to come visit! If you wish to fly, don't forget your AMA card :)

Had this 7-years ago! Used coaxial and fixed pitch helicopters... Had radio controlled models because infra red was always inferior! My Airwolf fixed pitch I modded has an on-board cam for FPV as well as turbine power. She flew in the skies of South Florida with AMA flyers. She did about 40-50mph on the straight way... Plus I owned some larger fixed pitch choppers including a Chinook... 😃 Those days are gone since I got into my quads! But it was enjoyable... They did have 2.4mgz transmitters for these but from other manufacturers who specialized in helicopters. Eachine is basically a drone manufacturer. You can get a better helicopter than THAT if you chose a SYMA helicopter... I don't know if they're still around... Good to see this after 10yrs!!! 😃

About ten years ago I worked with a bunch of guys who got into helicopters like this one. They struggled to learn to fly them and it seemed like they were always crashing...always breaking something...and always buying new parts to repair them. It looked really hard and difficult so I never even tried to fly one. When drones came out...I thought they would be just as hard to fly as these little helicopters. But the drones, even ones without altitude hold, are so much easier to fly and I'll say more durable. :)

I started out with a 3 channel coaxial helicopter. It was a Syma 107. Looks just like it. It was under $20 at the time. It was fun to fly inside the house actually But you fly it outdoor with less wind and not under sunlight. I still have it. We all learn how to fly an RC differently. When I got better flying it, I was ready for the 4 channel. I wish they have 4 channel Helicopter for under $20, but I wanted to fly something as a beginner and I can only afford under $20. I’m glad I got it. But more than $20 for a 3 channel, forget it. 😁 Happy flying! - Drew

That style heli got me into the hobby. I used to fly it all over the house and see where I could land. The ceiling fan was my best move(land and takeoff). People buy them cause they are the easiest helicopter to fly, fairly cheap and still kind of cool if you have never flown anything. I have a soft spot for them.

Plus it's pretty safe to fly inside. They can't really damage anything or anyone.

Have one of these... only fly it indoors in the winter to get my flying fix! Agree, not very easy to control with no yaw. And even the breeze from a ceiling fan can crash it. It led me to a Syma x5c, which led me to a Hubsan H501s, which is now leading me to either an Autel Evo or a Mavic Pro. Thx for the vid guys!

Oh man! back in the day I felt it was awesome to have one of these little indoor RC helicopters. For me this type of copter was actually the first step into the hobby of RC flying. These little coaxial helicopters are just an indoor gimmick though. Next to the fact that the infrared transmission is quite bad in an outside environment, these little copters lack any sort of power. They can't even fight a little breeze. I respect them for what they are, but nowadays, there is way better stuff on the market to begin with.

Get a Horizon Hobby Blade 230S, it has an easy to fly mode that will let you learn over time, it’s far more gratifying every time you climb the learning curve ladder one rung at a time. It’s not simple but it’s rewarding.

Mall kiosk special that you can never get parts for after you crash within the first five minutes. And yes, you are totally right. These are the things people think you’re referring to when you talk about RC helis or drones. When I talk about flying my Phantom, I get responses like, “Oh, yeah, I got one of those at the mall for my grandson” 🙄

I actually started with RC flying with something very similar.. It was from Thinkgeek, but did not use IR, it was 2.4Ghz. Still quite limited though... I then went to a non Coaxial V911 and LOVED it.I still fly it off and on today. Quads have pretty much taken over though, they just give you way more freedom!.

Yeah...I bought one just like that some years back.(I actually still have it) It was cheap at $70 then but that was the tech of the time, drones weren't a thing yet. Anything of quality was way expensive and generally out of reach for anyone to start into the hobby without spending big $$. Technology has improved by leaps and bounds and pushed the cost of these down, but I doubt this type of toy will go away anytime soon. Like you said, people will keep buying them because of the cost. These will probably be around until we can buy a quality, reliable, readily available toy at a comparable price.

My first R/C was an Estes Flightmaster ROG airplane. The transmitter operated at 27MHz (right in the CB band!), so the airplane could start acting goofy if somebody nearby who had a CB radio simply keyed-up their mic and had their CB on a certain channel. :-O My second R/C was an Air Hogs Havok Heli -- with which I had a number of surprisingly good flights. My third R/C was a Syma S107G R/C heli -- it was extremely similar to the one in this video in that they were similarly sized, both were coax, and both had an IR transmitter. Then I got a Syma S026G R/C heli -- this was a small version of the, "flying p**is" (a Chinook with two main rotor blades for & aft and no tail). This was also an indoor-only infrared control heli. Not a whole lot longer thereafter, I got a Syma S031G, a Syma S033G, and a Syma Armour F1 helicopter (all three are 450-sized outdoor helis) I had several other R/C helis and several fixed-wing aircraft; the Guillows Tuffoam P-38 Lightning and the Guillows Tuffoam P180 Avanti spring to mind at once because they were such great flyers. Sometime down the road, I ended up getting a Cheerson CX-33C hexcopter (it had three arms like a tricopter but had rotor blades on both its upper and lower pylons). This would be my first drone out of many. :-) And the rest is...shall we say...*history!!!* :-D

Started with a coaxial helicopter I got from Brookstone in '09... Flew that sucker all around the apartment (never took it outside) until it eventually died. Transitioning to a drone wasn't that hard because of playing FPS games which have similar controls. (left joystick looks up/down/left/right and right joystick moves forward/backward/left/right)

Hi Nate & Abby. Love your videos. In 2005 I bought a Blade cp helicopter by Eflight. It has a fly bar on top of the blades (one set only) and full collective control mechanism. Flew it only a couple of times, didn't handle wind too good and as a novice pilot gave up. Then in 2017 I bought a Phantom 3 and found the technology made it so easy to fly. Well that's my story. You hit the nail on the head with this video.

I have 2 coaxial helis. Both a lot bigger than the one your showing. One is 3 channel which functions like the one you have and the other is a 4 channel without the the tail motor. It was more agile and could handle some breeze. I haven't flown them in a long tome but they did look cool. The 3 channel was an Apache and the 4 channel was a Bell.

before multirotors were even a thing, I started with a mini-Titan 450 class Heli as my first rotor RC. While I could hover it OK, I was too apprehensive at crashing lots of $$$ to really improve my full range flight skills. Then I got a little Co-ax Heli like this one and it was perfect for practicing things like full circuits and nose in hovering (indoors of course) that trained my brain to be confident to try those on the more expensive Helis, as there was no fear of crashing as it just bounced back for more, instead of an expensive re-build. So, they have their place, but yes, there are much better options these days. I believe its better to learn RC first without all the stability aids as it prepares your brain for instinctive reactions when external conditions take effect (wind, gravity, etc)

I had a couple of airhog type rc heli's before quads became a thing. They were awful. They would drift all over the room and by the time you got them trimmed to kinda hover, the battery would be drained. You had to charge it and start the trimming all over again.

I have had a couple of these infrared helos. I found these useful as hovering trainers INDOORS. I know this system was big with micro and indoor R/C flyers a few years ago. It was funny to be flying in the garage and cruise out the garage door and the chopper would just drop...... As a first step trainer ok. I was a fixed wing flyer already had some experience with R/C systems and their setups. As an aside my little helo met it's end in a ceiling fan....

I have a fairly new one and its fun. I bought some larger spare batteries and will try it with them. Will have to mount them somewhere else, but I want to fly twice as long and the motor is probably strong enough for the added weight. It certainly inspired me to try a real heli though. I also bought a mini quadcopter for the same price (as cheap as it gets), but it hasnt arrived yet. And before all that, I had bought a bird (they are about 60+€ ), because its fascinating tk see it fly. I will check everything out and then see what to get next. It was a good thing I bought it, and if I dont need it anymore, I will have a nice present for someone else. Nonetheless, if someone asked me for advice, I would recommend buying a propper mini copter like you do aswell. The few bucks is probably worth it and if you dont like it, you have an even better present ;)

The big Three-Oh! How old do I feel... my kids (twins) will be 35 next month. -- We have always had interference in the R/C world. My first R/C cars were 27 Mhz... the same band as CB radio. So if you had a neighbor with a CB radio, or someone drive by talking on their CB radio your R/C went nuts. 2.4 Ghz you get interference from cell phones and wireless WIFI. Now we're getting into 5 Ghz stuff. So far I haven't had any interference problems, but more and more cell phone and WIFI are starting to use that ISM band so interference is imminent. -- My buddy that got me into drones started out in hobby grade R/C helicopters. Those things aren't for the lighthearted... they're difficult to control and they'll frickin' hurt ya!!

I have two Blade Mx3 that I cannot seem to get rid of. They are the same design but hobby grade and more controllable, plus you use a regular transmitter or BNF. Thry are fun but the Blade 230s or 230 v2 is a better deal for beginners. There is a HUGE following for the Blade 230's. I enjoy mine and although price wise, they are not cheap $130 ,they are a great product. Those box store helicopters are terrible. As you said, parents and grandparents should research whatever they buy for kids. Kohls was sellingboff a bunch of cheap toy grade helicpoters for $7 a while ago.

My 3rd video I've watched of yours glad to see a helicopter. I fly a lot of stuff planes, drones, birds. The collective pitch helicopter is definitely the hardest to fly and master lots of practice and flight simulator. Definitely learn how to fly a drone first if you want to fly a collective pitch helicopter lots of stuff you have to know first. Love the video thank you.

I just can’t get myself to buy one of those for my kids. The batteries aren’t removable and the IR radio system is trash. Coaxial helis do have a place and they help with your basic control and understanding and learning orientation with a heli. I recommend if you want a coax heli a Blade MCX 2 by Horizon Hobby. The MCX 2 is by far the best coaxial heli to learn the basics on though Blade does have another Coaxial heli the Scout and it’s decent as well. For a second heli after the MCX 2 has become second nature it is recommended that you get a decent fixed pitch heli such as the Blade 120S or 70S or you can buy a full Collective Pitch heli such as a Blade MCP S or Nano CPS or 230S which are all good helis, the S means these helis come with SAFE that offers an easy to fly mode that will help you learn to fly helis and when you are ready to advance to aerobatics you can just flip a switch from Stability Mode (Safe Mode) to Agility Mode that will allow you to do loops and rolls. These helis also come with a panic recovery button (usually the trainer button) that will recover the heli to straight and level flight should you lose control or lose orientation. Thanks RC Sailors for giving helis some love ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Yeah, I agree with you on all points. Those 3-channel coaxials were fun way back when, but technology has advanced so far in past decade, that these are just too crude and sketchy, especially at such a high price point! Even $20 for one of these is too much, considering that you can buy a tiny quad (with tons of LEDs around the prop guards!) that flies MUCH better than these heli’s, for less than $20.

I had a cheaper heli and I hated at beginning but later I learned how to fly it better I loved it last time I flew it was years ago because charger broke but fun til the end but later I got a drone and it was easy to learn both

My first drone was a H8D from JJRC fpv and had the worst experience. I bought it on Amazon a long time ago. First time I tried flying it and I couldn't get the trim right and centered. Tried everything and still it wouldn't fly straight. I have heard from someone that it had to do with one of the motor not working properly. I was so frustrated and then I finally gave up and now it's sitting on my desk collecting dust. Never flew a drone again lol.

My first airplane was on a couple of strings, lol.. Remember the old cox airplanes & cars , that's how old i am .have you ever tried to fly one of those "PICO " Styrofoam helicopters ? , they are ALL fun , some are just easier/ & more fun than others.. 😎👍 { good job missing the ceiling fan. } i have several of the - old - helicopters like that , they don't have a very long life span , even if you are careful with them ... 😒

As one commenter mentioned: Mall Kiosks. Those guys could fly these things in a controlled manner, never crash and land in their hand. How come those salespersons can do it?

I learned to fly with these 8 or so years ago, before I went to the Blade CP series helicopters. Then flight test showed how to build a tri-copters, then quads. I've built them all. You can see some of my builds on my KZfaq channel. Ekim Nosreip. These cheap co-axial helicopters were hard to fly so I put hours and hours into practicing until I was actually good at it. I could fly them forwards and backwards and land adhere er I wasted to. It ruined me because I got my muscle memory conditioned to flying the throttle only left stick and the yaw in the right stick. I had to buy a flight simulator in order to train myself to fly the CP Helicopters without crashing them. I think the worst thing a beginning helicopter pilot can do is to learn to fly these cheap little things. They are fun, but bad for anyone who wants to fly the "big boy" helicopters. Now, with the technology what it is today, anyone can fly the new RC helicopters.

my wife got me one years ago , it ended off getting me back into the hobby I had as a kid & buying flybarless 3d heli's ,..they are horrible to control it frustrated me into getting into collective pitch which has bigger learning curve , especially with mechanical setup , but much more satisfying..

for an indoor flier ONLY? I would definately buy this for my kid, if I had one... though, yeah, there are other better ones. personally? that was the first kind of RC heli I flew and I LOVED IT! I had an RC place like that too, (2 actually) and I flew them to bits (Literally, i was 8 at the time, lol) and I loved them... but... really, it depends on the quality. there are some truely HORRIBLE infrared rc's out there :(

TheRcSaylors true, infrared should be cheaper considering that 2.4ghz is really not at all much more expencive... but aye, it really is impresive! At times even scary.

funny your 29 yrs 363 days younger than me and yes i bought something similar but much smaller and more difficult to fly would have called it a loss but my dog at the time loved chasing it so it was actually a win as far as I'm concerned i bought a couple of the little air hog indoor race drones that are much easier to fly and the dog i have now loves chasing them which is why i bought several of them so as i was killing the batteries on one i could be charging the others i also bought one of the Blade Inductrix FPV which is fun but not as much as the air hogs with my little jr
