Hello Richard, that was a very enjoyable video. I was slightly concerned for the comfort of the passengers not being able to use the toilet because of there being a capacitor stuffed in the way, but then I realised they wouldn't be able to get to the toilet anyway because they have no legs!! Lol 😂 sorry couldn't resist! Cheers Howard 👍

I believe Philip K. Dick once asked if robots dream of electric sheep. Another pertinent question may be, do plastic figures even go to the toilet?

I'm sure if they're legless they will need the toilet very soon! Edit...Although i'm a tad late here so they probably sobered up by now.

Hi I can’t believe how realistic your work is and has gave me the confidence to make my own . However please don’t take this the wrong way but my eye always gets drawn to the the sky section joints which takes in my opinion the hard work into the smallest detail on the set on the ground breaks my dream and makes it unreal if that makes sense . Thanks again for bringing me back to this wonderful era and hopefully I will try and emulate in my project . Again please don’t take it the wrong way it’s just my observation.

The coaches did look odd untill you put the shim under. Thi has got to be one of the best layouts on youtube. You have taken a time and place and stuck to it. No steam trains or EWS/DB rail ect following along. Even at model railway shows I have seen very good layouts ruined by the mixture of trains from different era's. Keep up the good work. PS cant waiy to see your Granada when finished.

Good afternoon. With regard to your MK2 Bachmann coach height problem, check the height of the buffers above the top of the railhead. I made a simple gauge out of a piece of thin plywood about 11/2 inches long with a horizontal line exactly 14mm above a true bottom edge with two vertical lines 16.5mm apart acting as gauge lines. Set the gauge on a level piece of track with gauge lines above the rails. Run a coach up to it ( minus coupling if possible) the horizontal line on the gauge should be exactly central in the buffer heads, if low then packing on the bogie will be required, if higher then remove small amount off bogie spigot not the bogie itself. Once the buffer height is checked and amended as required then the coach height should be resolved. The 14mm buffer height is the scale height of 3'6' used on the prototype'. Hope this is of help. Have used this to check my coaches, and it works.

Nice Video Richard, I have a rake of 9 MK1s that I fitted with lighting and passengers and they use wiper contacts. What a drag!!!. Even a big steam loco struggke at times on the level. So I got some of those DCC Concrpts springs them discovered that the wheelsets had both wheels insulated so the update has been stalled for several months while I tried to come up with a solution. The thin wire looks like a great idea so I will give it a try. Thanks for sharing that tip....John

Hallo, quite a few years since you posted this clip. I model in N-Gauge and the Farish MK2As look even worse compared to the MK1s than they do in 00. I used the same technique to raise the coach as you show from 4m10s. Makes it look so much better. Best wishes from Germany

Hi Richard - another great vid. In the grouping and early BR days, the more modern coaches in a rake were usually provided for the 1st class passengers and also the more complicated diagrams (brake ends and especially catering vehicles) were the slowest to appear as they took longer & cost more to build. Not sure if these trends continued into the 1980's. If so, this suggests that the firsts/composites in your trains are represented by the Mk II's. These rules do not seem to be affected by livery!!

Hello Richard... Thank You for your great videos. On wires : With a lighter, You can burn the end of the thin wire. The lacquer turns into coal and is super easy to wipe off. On capacitors: There is a Tantalum type of capacitors, (which is surface mounted like your new leds). very small. Many people use them in locos and other places, where there is Little Space. On Leds: Did you see those leds on a flexible strip...? Greetings for now from Denmark... Jakob.

I'm not into model trains as such, but I love looking at how things are done. After seeing your comment Jakob, and knowing about tantalum bead capacitors being very small, I did a quick 'google' and found these: www.amazon.co.uk/Yellow-Radial-Dipped-Tantalum-Capacitors/dp/B00PZLW9C6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473929886&sr=8-1&keywords=tantalum+bead I reckon they'd do the job Richard, and then your legless passengers can use the toilets. Regards Mark in the UK

Tantalum capacitors are great but in this application you need at least a 500 - 1000uf one for anti flicker. They are readily available by are about 5 times more expensive than an electrolytic capacitor.

Another great video Richard and an amazingly simple "fix" for what is clearly a visual problem regarding the height for a lot of modellers. As always, you have brilliantly explained another procedure that could have been a daunting prospect for some. Would emery paper or wet and dry be an easier option to a mini file for removing the blackening from the coach axles? Im not sure if this has been asked before but Im also fascinated by the speeded up portions of your videos, and was wondering if you do this via a setting on your video camera or is this done on your computer when you are editing the videos? Keep up the good work.

Hi there. Nice video, and nice work on those coach rakes. To scrape the "lines" on the roofs, I use a seam scraper from Squadron Signal, used by aircraft modellers to "erase" the raised panel lines prior to scribe those panel lines back with a squadron signal scribing tool. Here is the intel about this stuff : Seam Scraper : www.squadron.com/Squadron-Tools-Seam-Scraper-SQ10203-p/sq10203.htm Scribing tool : www.squadron.com/Squadron-Tools-Scribing-Tool-SQ10202-p/sq10202.htm I purchased those from Walthers.com (the US manufacturer & modelling shop). You can also find those in military modelling shops like Hannants (there's one near the RAF Museum in Hendon (Colindale). Hope that's going to be helpful, and also thanks for your videos and congrats for the magnificent article in Hornby Magazine. Eric.

How did the plasti-card carriage shed cope with the summer heat? No warping? Also, the photographer who took my photos for Hornby Mag said I would get a fee for the article in the magazine. I was surprised, never even thought about that side of things as I was so chuffed to be asked! Did you get a fee?
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave. The shed has coped very well with the heat, better than I thought really. I think its all the small individual parts it's made from that helped. I did get a fee from Hornby, wasn't expecting it either!

EverardJunction Hi Richard, good to hear on both counts. Nothing worse than spending countless of hours on something only for it to suffer in the temperatures. Wasn't looking for a fee, but any will be welcomed in order to re-invest into the layout. No one from Hornby has said anything about it to me thus far.

+DaveClass47 Ha - no worries Dave. I think all of us with loft layouts (or the start of one) share the same issue!! Either too hot, or too cold - and only "right" for a couple of weeks a year. Typical British problem ;-) I've got a few weeks in between jobs so need to crack on with it. Lots of sawing and drilling too, so just going up there in shorts and with loads of water.
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction 7 жыл бұрын
It has been very hot this year. I basically didn't go up in the loft for the whole of July and August. The loft is a great place for the layout, but the temperature is by far the biggest problem.
@chrissloan9513
@chrissloan9513 7 жыл бұрын
Aside from it being too hot for humans, do you chaps find any issues with the trains, track or other equipment due to the fluctuating loft temps that I should bear in mind when building mine?
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 7 жыл бұрын
Chris Sloan If laying track on a cold day remember to leave gaps where the track joins, to allow for expansion. As for the trains, I tend to take my locos down in the height of summer, to avoid them drying out....but I suppose that's just as a precaution.

If you add a Bridge rectifier into the circuit your coaches wont be stuck always facing the same direction on the track. Right now the way you have it wired an LED will only work if the wheel that is on the positive rail is also on the positive side of the LED. Add a Bridge rectifier and it wont matter which rail that wheel is on as the output to the positive side of the LED will always be positive even if being fed by the negative rail ;)
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction 7 жыл бұрын
All the circuit boards have a rectifier in them because the layout is dcc. Check out episode 14 of my howto series for more info on the circuitry inside the coaches.

'Could' do that but then you're stuck with a rake of coaches you can't separate which would make handling much harder, especially if you want to work on them.

thats why I said servo leads, so you can unplug them for that very reason.

also Everard Junction, are the cars close coupled or do you have the corridors fitted between cars as i am so used to seeing a 1/4 to 1/5 inch gap between cars on model railroads
@EverardJunction

The coaches are indeed close coupled to get rid of the gap. Running all the lighting from one circuit would only work for a small number of coaches. Only a certain number of leds will run off one board at 12v.
