Hey Benjamin, I did a quick scan thru your channel to find the interview you referenced with the med school student whose grandfather was killed in the cultural revolution, but was unable to find it. Could you provide a link? I'm very interested in watching it. Thanks man, keep up the great content

This just sounded too over the top! I googled it and couldn't find anything! Do u know anything about this??? It just sound made up? I mean what professor post-1960 would do that? @@BenjaminABoyce Sounds like Simon has an obvious bias, which is understandable assuming he is being truthful and accurate in his recounting. It is possible he is altering or omitting certain facts of the situation. You may be interested to know that the Soviet Union was also very critical of China's cultural revolution, and that is also the official position of China today. A cultural reckoning of some kind could have been useful perhaps, but ultimately the cultural revolution was a power struggle that went off the rails, no pun intended.

He “inspired” the hero in my erotic novel, The Opening of George Bridges. (“Hands, George!” she shouted. He blushed. He had been naughty again, very naughty, and once more he had been called out. As he lowered his hands and accepted accountability from the BIPoC community, he couldn’t help but ask himself: had he... wanted to be punished? His green-on-green bow tie betrayed his secret; it gave a spontaneous twitch.)

Really good advice on how to have conversations with someone who has a different viewpoint than you have. These conversations are almost impossible to have on social media and I often try to point that out when someone tries to do so with me. The main points you made are important. Be respectful, patient, kind, listen, and never call the person a name. Ask questions to gain knowledge but not to bait them and don't be demeaning of their views. It's amazing how much we have in common with others when we take the time to talk.

You should not apologize for the cat videos. We all need to be reminded of the non-human world, especially as a break from all the strife we are experiencing in our culture. In a society in which so many people suffer from depression, it would actually be wonderful if every "serious" program was punctuated with such breaks, to ground us and to refresh our spirits. I went to college in the 90's, and the climate didn't seem to be anything like what is discussed currently. I had hadn't heard of intersectional feminism, critical race theory, affirmative consent, that sort of thing, until roughly 15 years later. I think this is pretty common with gen Xers. I know these ideas were brewing somewhere during the 90's, but I don't think the majority of people were exposed to them.

At 26:20 - a college on the east coast having a similar-ish meltdown, you're probably talking about the strikes/protest that happened at Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Swarthmore in November (The two first stated ones being the most notable mentioned around the Twittersphere). I don't know about an N-word incident with Bryn Mawr happening during last fall (Wouldn't be surprised if it did occur at one point though) The simmering of the whole thing can be directly pointed back to what we saw in June, but the fall strikes initiation did mirror Evergreen in the 'gleaming racism from an email when there's none to be found'. Although in this case, Haverfords president said phrases that were perceived as highly insensitive and harmful about the killing of Walter Wallace Jr, which then led to a sit-in occurring that same night, which then led to the initiation of a 14 day "strike" against the institution (The Organizers demanded special protections and money from the college while striking against it so. .. I don't know how much of a strike it actually was). The biggest irony with the email being that the co-signer was one of the Deans who happens to be a Black Woman, though because she differed from them in belief, the supporters saw her as part of the problem. The whole thing is certainly a good post-evergreen college-protest-case-study. I would know :)

@LonelyWhiteIris
@LonelyWhiteIris 3 жыл бұрын
@@megofiachra3247 Swarthmores president did put her foot down from the start and told the students basically "I recognize what you're fighting for but this method doesn't seem called for and won't foster dialog". This was after Haverford ended and Bryn Mawr was quieting down. Swarthmore strike was the youngest siblings attempt at the glory of the older siblings strikes (Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Swarthmore are considered a Tri-College consortium). I do chalk a solid quarter or even half to the fact that Swarthmores president is a Black Woman and has a background in Africana studies, so she's a hard person for the standard student activists to prod at. What ended their strikes (Or suspended it as the organizers put it) was a faculty signed petition urging them to go back to class. Wasn't as blunt as you're putting it, but still a decent "This method of protest isn't really called for, let's discuss these issues while still going to class"

You know when I graduated high school a good friend of mine ended up going to Evergreen and lived in the dorms there. I was going to UWT at the time, but spent most of my nights hanging out with him at evergreen drinking and smoking weed. Back then the biggest things we had to worry about was getting chased by the greener cops and RAs for smoking weed (2008, before legalization) and one night I think the campus flipped a cop car at a Dead Prez concert. We had left before that because we didn't end up getting tickets.

In the "How should institutions handle it" section that SHOULD be common sense, if no one can state any specific wrongdoing or make any clear point as to what they want or are trying to do then the university admin should explain to the disrupters what is required of them at college and give them a warning. It's ok to get emotional, but you still need to have a point.

Respectfully -- I couldn't disagree with you more on how colleges should handle such situations when a "racist" scream erupts on campus (28:00). Coddling the accusers to the point where you admit their lies are truth is exactly what has us where we are now. It seems you believe that this might be a way to push through until a better path can be found. What happens when an innocent, even a single individual, loses their career, is put in prison, or suffers in another way because the goal was to appease the evil rather than confront it head on? You get more of it, and we are, and people are actually dying because of it. Not a single cent should be spent on this, as you say, workshops and the like. Children are homeless as a result.

I could have answered that question better. A stern authority is required and I tend to hide that part of me in polite company.

@@BenjaminABoyce -- Thanks for the response. I know you work hard, and I appreciate most everything you do. You have helped me many times. You can always challenge me when I comment. I am old, but I am sensible and sane, and an ocean away.

@@BenjaminABoyce Fair enough. But I was serious. I'm a big fan. It was just one of the rare moments when you didn't come across as authentic to me.

I appreciated his diplomacy and humility. Though for a moment before he answered the Naima question, I pictured him saying "I don't like the b*tch."
