Adventure Motorcycling in Utah - ADV ersity Episode 2

Hardships increase humility and strength... so perhaps adventure motorcycling can be an analogy for how we handle hardship in everyday life? Bad things happen, and we can choose whether to fight through them or walk away. We can choose whether to learn from them or hide from them in the future. We can choose to see the worst in it, or try and find the best.
This episode gets a little more introspective than just a ride-report set to film and music. I hope you don't mind.

Amazing job Tyler! I feel really bad you felt like you were slowing us down. None of us felt like you were a "burden" at all! We all had our struggles - that is what makes Adventure riding so awesome! The trip would have been boring if it was smooth sailing. I am bummed you hurt your leg though:(

Ya dude! We love you Tyler... you're so humble and kindhearted! Any ADV rider knows you can't expect smooth sailing. Sometimes you're hammer sometimes you're the nail. It just happened to be your turn to be the nail. That's why we ride in groups - to support each other!

Tyler You made a 65 year old man cry. Watching your video's is like going to Church. It alway encourages me and brings me back to the most important thing in life of knowing one's self. I have to agree with a lot of the other coments on this post you did amazing keeping up with such pros. Thank you for what you do.

This is what I think most all of us enjoy, appreciate and respect about you and your videos Tyler. Honesty and the reality of who you are. We can all edit out lives to only show us in the best possible light, but at the end of the day we all have to look in the mirror and see the real us. The extra pounds, the forming lines of age creeping up on us, the scars of our less than graceful moments. It's life...real, sometimes harsh, embarrassing, painful but at the end of it all it makes another chapter for the story of our lives which we would never change. Thank you Tyler, for what you do for our community.

Tyler, I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but I didn't subscribe to you because you're a professional ADV rider, or because I see you as an expert. I subscribe to eveRide precisely BECAUSE you kinda suck. Because *I* kinda suck. Actually, I REALLY suck. I relate to your experience more than the pros making videos, and am way more inspired by a guy who's as average as I am, and yet just keeps on going. You don't give up just because you're not the best, and you get more out of it as a result. You're truly an inspiration. Just keep on sucking, man. I'll keep watching. Much love :)

The following quote is one of my favorites and seems apropos for this video. :) Keep the faith and keep on, keepin' on! "Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent." - Calvin Coolidge

Dude, you hit every note in this series. We don't watch, support, share and comment because you are an expert at anything --- we do so because you are one of us. Like you, most of us are weekday workers - weekend warriors (or wannabe's). You have a gift of communicating what we experience, at one time or another, plus you have the amazing southern Utah in your backyard to play in! Hope your injuries are healing, your outlook is encouraged and your spirit is seared with the desire to continue the adventure.

Mate - this video had three cups of everything, thrown into a blender, mashed up, and baked into a perfectly visually satisfying production. Sprinkled with some cinnamon, and presented on a plate of pristine silver. Given a voice over from above, and thus the video was born. Excellent stuff.

I like this series. It’s like watching the slow kid trying to do normal kid stuff. That’s how you learn... crazy trying this with that bike too. I was thinking of saving a few bucks but this has made it very clear. And how much physical health, strength, strength, strength, and endurance is needed in a goddamn desert. Thank you for showing this stuff. The diamond water question came to mind too. Got a drone, batteries... no water. I am glad you survived. Maybe you don’t realize how close to death you were. Fatigue causes loss of control - over the cliff. And being worried about how you look over safety. Of course those guys would rather you go slow and survive than truck your corse up a cliff and the hassle of it all. I’m glad you made it. Sincerely. Just please get a better bike and keep in shape with weight lifting before you do something like this again. Whatever we see on the camera, it is at least 10x worse. I know I would not be able to do this in my present shape, even with the best equipped. And you need to do it again. And conquer it like a pro next time. And your video editing is some of the best on KZfaq. It is very very good work. Thank you for taking the time to compose this all for us.

You asked in a previous video what makes something an adventure. My reply was that an adventure is when you take yourself a bit beyond your previous comfort zone and come out the other side. IT allows for growth in your riding and in yourself. I have been through days like you had in this ride and experienced ALL the same emotions but I think I am a better rider because of these times. You will be too. And you are right, we don't watch your videos expecting to see some GNCC expert. There are plenty of those out there. We watch to see a regular guy have typical experiences in a beautiful part of the world (you are one lucky SOB BTW being able to live in southern Utah) and knowing how to artfully present it to the rest of us. Oh yeah...and...get a KTM. :)

It is as the Swedish arctic adventurer Ola Skinnarmo would have said: There are two different types of adventurers: One who fights and suffers through the challenge and emerges as a mental wreck. The other type releases the final goal and finds harmony in the present. The latter kind of adventurers arrive in harmony and will also return one day. Everide You representant the adventurer that is trying to find the harmony in the moment whatever the challange. This is truly inspiering.

Hey brother. Greetings from Australia. What a great two videos these were. Amazing country and scenery. Looking at your experience of this trip you could be forgiven for thinking this wasn't your trip. But it actually was because you were there. My wife and I are road riders down here and have done many day and weekend trips together on my bike. Not every trip went as planned and not every trip was without it's issues. But like you did on this one, we made the best of whatever situation were found ourselves in. We found a moment to enjoy and even have a laugh at how ridiculous it was that we are doing it this way instead of the comfort of our car. Like you said, we do it coz we enjoy it. It's our passion. And when we arrive home, freshen up and sit down to relax, we find ourselves saying "wow what a great weekend" and we begin to think about the next one... I love how real and humble you are in these 2 videos and your rolling commentary is a pleasure to listen to. Well done. Scoota.

Excellent video. Don't ever quit doing what you do. It is an encouragement to me to watch a normal guy ride crazy cool stuff and put it up here to watch. I appreciate that you can admit that you are not some pro rider or whatever. It's ok that you're not. Because you give us normal guys the spotlight in a weird sort of way. You give us hope that we don't have to be "pro", whatever that is, and to just have a great time. Thanks again.

One of me favorite quotes about why we ride yet! "To feel, smell, taste hear and see... to really see every moment. To move past obstacles and negativity, to fight through difficult weather and live more in the moment even when you are in the thick of it. To know when to throttle on and know when to stop, to have the wisdom to turn back when things aren't fun, but the guts to keep going when you know things can only get better. To get out of your air conditioned cage, your front and side air bagged norm, your comfort zone, the one with the five-star safety rating. To do something unique, something you love. To try a new route on a new road, in a new way. To go a little faster, to break a little later. To smile a little wider, and love a little deeper. To focus on what actually matters. And that doesn't mean taking unnecessary risks or doing stupid things for the trill of today, but making things happen within in rationality that gives us a reason to remember what we did today tomorrow. It's not to be dangerous, but to be conscience..."

I think I've realized that in that situation you have to take the right amount of responsibility for your decisions , because they don't affect just you , but everyone . that you were out of your depth . that you didn't give up . and that I admire you for your experience and lessons , more than I admire them for their right bikes , experience , and what ever else . I say to you humbly , .. Well done . I get those moments , and that humility is beautiful , and empowering .

Hey Tyler, I literally never comment on KZfaq, but wanted to thank you for the video. No one ever wants to show when they have trouble or come close to failure. I'm so captivated by these ADV video's and yet I've never really been dirt biking lol Your video just felt so real and that's what I want to see. Watching people make these things look easy isn't helpful. I want to see the real dirt and grind so I can somewhat appreciate the work this type of riding involves. Thanks again!

Tyler, I understand the feelings of frustration and embarrassment when things go south and veer far from what you envisioned. I have to be honest with you buddy. You knocked it out of the park with this one. It's a home run because you were courageous enough to be honest with what happened. It shows the type of person you are. You didn't present it in an overly dramatic fashion like the 30 second clips from a reality TV show that have unfortunately become the norm. Instead you took us with you through the struggle. Not just of the physicality but the crushing weight of self doubt. Without a doubt you are an adventure biker because you get out of the house and do it. I'm proud of you.

This video has influenced me to want to be apart of the Adventure motorcycling community. The loyalty trust and willingness to help a fellow motorcyclist without anything to gain personally has always been an aspect in the motorcycle community. Believe that these words/ideals were shown in full strength not only did you document a great ride but you also captured maybe unknowingly the companionship and brotherhood of motorcyclist at their finest. Good job!

No, you are not the best adv rider out there. And yes, you made a big mistake by taking the wrong bike because bikes equipped like this have no business on these kind of tracks. But, you are most definitely one sympathetic dude. An honest man with great persistence. Serious props Tyler. Sometimes the hardest thing in life isn't the trail we're on, but the ego between our ears. Also, at least for me, the reason I watch your videos is because it is real and can easily relate to situations where a trail you've conquered numerous time just jumps up and grabs hold of you with everything it has. Had a similar incident late last year where I washed out in a rut on gravel and snapped all but an inch of the clutch lever off. I had been on that trail numerous times before, but eventually had to call for assistance because I was riding solo and exhausted.

Another outstanding piece of work! I watch your videos for the EXACT reasons you you state in your moment of realization. I've had the same struggles on various rides over the years. With time I've improved my skills, equipment and probably most important, my attitude while encountering difficult situations that make just a ride an adventure. Your ability to capture and express what goes on during a ride like this and what's going on in your head is a gift. Thanks for doing what you do!

You represent reality, just imagine how many learn from errors across the earth on this wonderful machine. Lot's of life lessons are not uploaded to KZfaq and most of us have all been there.

👍 I remember having to hop on one leg carrying 60lbs of gear on my back. I would not have made it if the others who were with me had not stood behind me, lifting the pack up and pushing me up the mountain. Likewise, the comments below shows the supportive and family oriented -sport- way of life exists because of the riders. That is what I see when I watch these videos. I watch them because I want to be a part of that community too.

Great job brah I guess one thing is it was a learning experience and it was an adventure and perhaps next time when you ask for something harder remember careful what you wish for God just might give it to you and in this case it sounded like he did God gave you a great test and instead of pushing beyond your boundary you tested your limit I know things will get better but just remember God gave you a great adventure , so you will be better prepared for your next one much love Tyler God bless and just keep on going!!! And remember a lot of us out here I have a lot of love and respect for you because for one you're doing what I can't if you remember I spoke to you a while back the doctor says my back is inoperable so most of my adventures I see through your videos and have for a long time and thanks to you I've gotten to know CDS, Miss Stacy, and hermit anyway I'm rambling God bless and never give up the adventure. Oh by the way how did that seatback work for you ?

I've had touring, cruiser and sport bikes. Rode dirt bikes back when I was a kid. a 1990 Honda 250 dual sport when I was 11-12, in my adult life I'm ready to get back into the dirt. your videos have influenced it tremendously. I watch your videos very often if not daily. I live in central Virginia right between the ocean and the mountains. thanks for the inspiration and things I can only dream about at the time. Gives me more to look forward to besides the same old daily grind. keep it up

Before, I've only wanted and dreamed of riding thousands and thousands of miles in a motorcycle but only in concrete roads! I've watched adv riding vids before but never found it enticing. But when I watched your vids, you've inspired me to go off the road and embark on a real adventure! You're a freakin inspiration man! That's why I watch your videos :)

Thanks for keeping it so real, you are still a legend mate! I still fall off my motorcycle, usually in front of an audience. It keeps us humble and we learn from our mistakes, this is why we call ourselves adventure riders, you never know what will happen on each ride and it could turn out to be a real serious adventure. All the best from Down under.

Great video. I appreciate the true narration of your struggles. Your sharing of the tough reality of some of these rides will help all of us grow as individuals as well as a riding team. I have ridden all my life, but am new to a dirt bike with Panniers (2015 KLR 650). My first ride in sand my leg was sucked under the pannier and I decided a soft set up was for me. Thankfully guys like you have documented these rides to reinforce some of our choices in gear, bikes, and quest for adventure. Ride on and keep up the good work.

Fantastic Video EveRide!!!! I think most of us have been there on those days when you are the ONE having ALL the problems, but really it only seems that way internally. I think it is exactly as you demonstrate: have patience with those when it is their day to face Riding Trials n Tribulations. Comes down to living in the moment, but not letting a single bad moment not kill the passion. Thanks for an awesome adventure shared!!

Everyone gets handed a slice of humble pie from time to time and it doesn't quite taste as good as other pies. Glad you knew when to brake because sometimes people let that ego get out of control. You're an awesome dude and I've been addicted to your video's because you demonstrate a competent skill level, passion, and sense of adventure that's attainable to someone like me.

through your video's I understand the fact that you ride in a life threatening environment, so it would be irresponsible and dangerous for you to do adventures alone. But on the other hand, I use your video's to explain to my wife the reason I prefer to ride alone, and I want to thank you for that...My ego and pride, much like yours, prevents me from telling my riding party about my injuries or other problems because I don't want to be the weakest link... I strive to keep up with the group, regardless of the difference in skill, experience, or equipment... I cant even fathom having the ability to stay in a group as impressive as this one you were in, I would've died the first day trying to stay with those guys...I tip my hat to you for the effort, heart, and determination you showed us..

Good stuff buddy, It is always fun to watch your videos my friend. I am not a fan of sand, goodness, good job staying in there, I went to the river two days ago, was around 100 degrees, and the sand was thick and deep, almost got me several times, no fun. I have the Pants and Jacket from Rocky mountain, Great great especially for the money. Great stuff my friend and thanks for sharing with us all. Thanks for sharing and I hope you have a blessed week.

Man, your video was one of the best I watched in the topic of adventure bikers. Your words are so well chosen, so natural, I really could identify myself to what you experienced here. I was also really touched by it and was really not expecting it, almost dropped a tear at some point :)) You're so right, what makes us great is simply what we are, doing what we love. You're really doing a great job here and I guess anybody here can say the same. Wonderful, thank you for sharing this.

Awesome video! I spent three months in 2015 out in Utah and met a sweet lady with a generous family. The lady I met introduced me to her family and her brother let me take his BMW F650 GS through Zion National Park. Watching your professional video brings back a lot of fond memories, luckily for me I didn't face the challenges you did on your ride. I felt so bad for you! Safe riding my friend. :-)
