Looking forward to getting my Typhoon 230. This will be my first Tig machine. Hoping they come in sooner than later. Figure never too old(45) to learn a new skill. I will be trying this exercise out when it gets here. Looking forward to more in depth videos on the typhoon thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us.

A little off this training subject but has everything to do with tig welding. I need to weld stainless exhaust to a steel exhaust flange, should it be back purged? What filler?

Great plan. What I like to do is drill a bunch of 1/2" holes in 20ga and have them fill them once they can run a bead.

Good lesson. Thank you. I noticed your tungsten tip kept it's shape. I have a 210ext and my tungsten tip always looks look a flower, meaning small balls form around the tip. This is my first AC welder so I have nothing else to compare it too. I can get a decent weld, but my tip looks different than every video I've watched. I've tried blue, chartreuse, and purple tungsten 3/32 to 1/8. I grind parallel to the tip with a dedicated diamond wheels and have tried multiple wheels. I've tried gas lens and standard collet bodies, 5 to 8 cups. I've verified the gas flow CFH at the torch with a flowmeter is 2x the cup size + 2, so if I'm running a 5 cup, I'm running 12 CFH. I've tried 20 to 40 for the balance. I've varied the frequency from 60 to 120. Nothing I try seems to matter. The tip is always misshapen which I believe is affecting arc stability and possibly contaminating the weld with tungsten. Any words of wisdom you can offer to help me solve this problem are much appreciated.

Check your machine to see what 20-40% for the balance means. Some manufacturers mean 20-40% electrode positive, and some mean 20-40% electrode negative. Electrode positive is the cleaning side of the alternating current, and is the side that puts a ton of heat into your tungsten. Make sure that you're running somewhere 20-40% electrode positive, and not 20-40% electrode negative which will cook your tungsten.

@@ischmitty Thanks. It's an Everlast 210 ext so it's positive.

Could be several factors playing against you. I’d start with preflow and post flow. .6 seconds preflow, and at least 8 seconds post Flow to keep the tungsten shielded while it’s still hot. I typically run 35% balance all the time and hardly ever change it… just a good all around setting. Running a higher frequency can help by reducing heat input into the tungsten as well
