I remmember reading an article by a sports reporter. A press conference had been called at Anfield, and the general assumption amongst those assembled, was that the club was about to annouce the signing of Gary Pallister from Middlesborough(who they had been linked with), but they were astounded when the club unveiled Rushie. I was a season ticket holder from 1978 to 2002, so i like you, saw that period and i loved Rushie. The problem at the time was, that we needed strengthening in central defence. We had lost Mark Lawrenson to a freak injury in 1988, Alan Hansen was suffering persistant injury problems and was coming to the end of his career, so a central defender should have been a priorty. Seems to be a reccuring issue at Liverpool, lose one or two central defenders, and do anything but sign one.

@@DavidSmith-fs5qj i didn't know that, Palister would have been a colossus for us. Tbf apparently Dalglish wanted mark Wright a lot sooner too. But whether people rate him is a different issue I guess

@@SFNDMK I agree, Martin Keown could also have been considered, either of these two would have carried on the Anfield tradition of having top class central defenders. With regards to Rushie, a club legend of course, but did we really need a striker? We had just won the league with the Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge trio wreaking havoc with opposing defences, he didnt really fit into the style that those three players had developed.

Aldridge did get a lot of goals but it would be difficult not to in that side. Rush was just on a different level , not quite the player he was before Juve but still top quality. If it's a choice between him and Aldo there's only one winner. If you ever saw Aldridge play for Ireland you would realise he was a pretty ordinary footballer.

@@markreville6917 Maybe we do them both a disservice by comparing Rush with Aldridge. I think that Rushy was an amazing player when he had Kenny laying them on a plate for him. But Aldo had different strengths, like heading and being in the right place at the right time. For me, the 1987 team was one of the most exciting we've ever had. But maybe we all have our favourite eras.
