Watching this video and seeing Conseco’s 1986 card reminded me of a game I saw at Fenway Park. The Sox decided to put Conseco in to pitch (I guess he did some pitching in the minors) and he blew his arm out.Eventhough I was at the game I missed it as I brought my wife and she wanted to leave early.

Great content. Obviously can only have so many honorable mentions but someone that always gets left out (likely due to implications in Mitchell report and balco), is Gary Sheffield. Only 1 of 4 players in history with 500 hr and 250 SB. Others in that group? Mays, Bonds and A rod. (Interesting only 1 clean out of the group). Also hit at a 292 clip for his career. First ballot numbers of course without the steroid implications

I started collecting in ‘72, but really hit hard from ‘79-‘84 then tailed off until ‘90. I had all of those except the Yount. All but the Brett came new from packs and I had multiples of each one. I had at least 6 Hendersons. Hard times hit and I started selling them off in ‘91 to pay bills. I got way more than I paid, but not book at the time. Definitely nowhere near these numbers.

Poor Edgar with the lowest buy-in for a HOF rookie. Makes me wonder if he (as of today) tops the "bottom" of that list of all HOFers... Throwing out some love for the pure longevity guys. Julio Franco might still be playing somewhere and I grabbed his '83 RCs for my PC back in 2007 when he was still in the majors. Also did the same with Jamie Moyer ('87) when he was still playing in 2012.

As someone who has been into card collecting for 30+ years and now trying to maximize the value of my massive stash and the current boom, I find all of your videos to be well made, interesting, and extremely relevant to how I’m currently thinking and approaching things. Kudos to you for bringing it all together in these vids! Oh, and more vids of some of your best or most interesting collection purchases and maybe a peek into how you organize (physically and electronically). McGriff also had a 86 Leaf, I built many of those sets, boxes were much cheaper then the Donruss. Now as I continue to watch the video your not including Leaf or OPC, they're definitely more rare then their American counterpart. I seem to remember on the Donruss wax cases they included a few Leaf boxes in a case, can't remember the year or years this was done. 1984 Fleer update were the only cards I ever sold from my collection.

What a great video, Chris. A great job highlighting all the biggies of my childhood collecting era. Can't include all the then-hot non-HOFer rookie cards (Clark, Coleman, Joyner, etc.), but I might suggest adding the 1984 Donruss Joe Carter rookie to this list. Curious, do you use PSA 9 prices instead of PSA 10 prices as not to skew the data too much? Using PSA 10 prices would give us slightly different results, as I am sure you know. Thanks again for the great content!
@collectorinvestordealer
@collectorinvestordealer 3 жыл бұрын
Appreciate that. Ah I forgot the 84 Joe Carter, I actually meant to include him. Yeah the reason I use PSA 9 instead of PSA 10 is for exactly the reason you said. You'll end up getting weird results because of the pop report, especially if you are ranking the values.

@@collectorinvestordealer Inteestingly, I think the only card on the list with 0 PSA 10 pop is the 1981 Fernando Valenzuela Topps. There are over 150 Raines of that year, but no Fernandos. Maybe that has to do with where he was on the cut sheet. Not sure.

Chris - Once the card companies realized their over-production mistake of the late 80's and early 90's; they tried to make up for it with the premium and mega premium sets (which we thought $5 for 5 cards was insane). Around when did the card companies finally back off production numbers for their base sets? Keep this style of video coming - super educational!

I have over 60k cards with majority around late 80s and early 90s. I have a couple hundred from 56 - 58. Mostly baseball. I did get into football, basketball and hockey cards too. I’d say around early 2000s I took them to a card shop and the owner didn’t even want to look at them and said I’ll give you like an adsurbed number like $150 dollars for everything. I said are you joking? Put them back in my car and took off. I have them all organized according to brand, sport, year and numerically in card set boxes. My better cards are in binders with glossy plastic sleeves. They been sitting in my closet for years now. I see these videos and card collector magazines with price guides and moral of the story is they are only worth what someone is willing to pay. I’m in my 40s now and I’ll probably have them until my time on this earth is over. So many summers spent collecting and organizing. I’m not sure they’ll ever be a price I’d be willing to part with.

I gets under my skin everytime i think about Mark and Sosa. Those 2 alone brought back baseball from the dead after the strike. MLB and their cronies used them and turned their backs on them afterwards. Sad just sad.

Yea I agree. And you know whats the irony of that era...now MLB juiced their baseballs so that there would be more homeruns. Many of those pop flies are now going into the bleachers. Also, the fact that the Commissioner and those in power allowed the Astros cheat their way to take the WS trophy with virtually zero punishment on any player. Makes me sick.

I still cant get over Big Mac crying when he got questioned by CONGRESS (a bunch of losers to begin with - that was total BS) - BASEBALL was saved by Mac and Sosa - no one had their backs - Mac and Sosa, Rose should be in the hall of fame - (Rose was greatest player i EVER saw play and Im 71 now - Mantle my all time favorite player but ROSE beats him - but as a person Rose SUCKS. And another thing that bugs me - how come NO ONE has copied Roses batting stance? He bent over which gave him a lower strike zone and he had over 4000 hits - hello............copy it morons.

Really enjoying your videos far more than others. Being one of the people that is in the category of leaving the hobby during the junk wax era and recently re-engaging, I find it very informative what you do, especially with the videos on hobby trends, history, your history and opinions, Q&A. Speaking of Q&A, your position on opening wax makes sense, but I’m curious about sets. It seems that buying complete sets to get good condition tops cards is still a gamble, but much less of a gamble than opening wax packs/boxes. There are instances where there may be 2-3 key cards in a set and buying the complete set with the hope of getting 50-75% of the key cards in good condition and then having them graded seems to be far less expensive than buying those key cards individually already in psa case. What are your thoughts on this strategy and is this an approach you take at times? If yes would also love to hear what criteria you use for decision making? Basically tell us your secrets!...haha. Any feedback is appreciated and thank you for allowing us to learn from your experience! Will

Hello Will, good question. Its not something that I really do much (maybe once in a while), but I generally prefer to leave sealed sets sealed. As sealed stuff usually goes up in value in the long run, and you can always open it later. That being said, I do know dealers who do exactly what you are saying, and quite successfully, so there is definitely something to it.

Good stuff as always! I wish collectors would give defense more credit/consideration. Vizquel had amazing balance and hands. I think Ozzie Smith said it best, 'a great defensive play can swing the momentum, more than a big home run. Especially in the playoffs.' And what do you know, the 2020 Dodgers' fortunes probably swung on that shoestring catch Betts made against the Braves....
