I remember one, I think it was for Heinz beans, where a nurse gets in from a night shift and has beans on toast in a cosily lit kitchen. There are always lots of kettles, cups of tea, 'quirkily' decorated houses, children running to school, tired but contented looking school gate mums. The overall message is 'your life is kind of crap, but it's heart warmingly crap, because you're overworked and underpaid and let's face it, you can't really change it anyway, because that's how we designed the system. Here, buy our stuff to make us even richer at your expense, thanks.'

This has summarised something I couldn't have put into words if I tried. I have the same problem with American-style adverts, there's an uncanny feeling to them I can't actually describe, they're often very "relatable" in a synthetic way. Like the companies are trying to act as if they know you.
@gibbygoldfisch70122 жыл бұрын
It's like they've all been made by an AI trying to relate to how humans speak and this is the 19th iteration of the machine after small, successive improvements. By the 21st edition there'll be ads interuppting a discussion of the weather to ask if we take milk or sugar

from a marketing standpoint they know exactly what they're doing. relatable ads get people interested. it's just,,,they haven't caught up with what "relatable" means nowadays. they're out of touch and won't change so it's like looking into the past.
@vvelvettearss2 жыл бұрын
@@curlygurly2112 I remember a time (is it still going on?) where every damned advert EVERY SINGLE ONE featured a mixed race couple. I think those are fine but I thought " this isn't relateable, this isn't even close to real life" it was absurd and so weird
@ileolai2 жыл бұрын
its also like. they're trying to sell you a product, as well as an idea. the idea is that this product will make you a better, happier, more successful person if you buy it. and it doesn't matter if its car insurance or instant coffee or toilet paper. they're ALL like that. ''we understand you, Average Joe, and we care about you, so much. That's why *we* know the *one* thing that could make you happy and complete forever: this turbo charged dick pump''

Unfortunately the English language is slowly but surely snuffing out the previous cultural and linguistic uniqueness that exists throughout the world. And yeah I get that culture and language are free flowing and evolving. Doesn't change the fact that it's a one-way street in the vast majority of instances with English shoving it down everyone else's throats. Oh well, as a native English speaker I guess it just makes it easier for me.

@Simon McCreath trust me, we Americans hate it just as much as you guys. It’s a constant reminder that to companies and to our own government, we are just consumer sheep. I remember going to universal studios and they roped off the convenient side exit and the ropes led us through all the food and souvenir stores all the way to the main exit. THEY LITERALLY HERDED US LIKE SHEEP. And now I here that this bullshit consumer sheep culture has infected the rest of the world. Damn

It's incredible because in the German speaking area as well, this EXACT commercial gets played ad nauseam by insurance companies and banks. I can hear it in my head now "Auf die Durchstarter, die Baumerklimmer und die Grossstadtstürmer" as they show close-ups very varying but unvaryingly approachable faces, usually including the tough-but-hearty biker, some pierced hipster girl, a little ginger kid and the mixed race woman with very fluffy hair (actually she's part of every commercial period).

Patronising sickly story-book sweetness. I'm an American living here for some time now. I've gotta say the first advert I heard like this got me. I was like wow this is awesome an emotive bit of poetry, on a TV advert here in the epicentre of English language literature! I was moved and impressed. Heart strings were pulled. And then they did it again.

I feel the same way.
